Today the Japanese carpenters made a beginning with tearing down the Interpreters House, which will be rebuilt entirely anew, much larger and higher than the old one; also two junks recently brought into the stream took in some private goods. Saturday the 5th. This morning quite early, a letter from the Opperhoofd, the Honorable Mr. Elias, dated Kokora the 1st of this month, was delivered to me, containing his arrival there on the aforesaid date, hoping to return to the Island without impediments on the 7th of this month; at noon I again received a letter from the Opperhoofd, dated Jedo the 20th of March, reporting His Honor's arrival there on the 18th of the said month. Sunday the 6th. At noon two junks were towed to the Papenberg. Monday the 7th. The approach of the court journey bark... Tuesday the 8th. The court journey bark arrived and anchored before our island. Having learned of the Opperhoofd's arrival, I intended to proceed outside the land gate together with the other Honorable Company servants, but had the honor of receiving His Honor, who was already inside the same gate, in good health, and subsequently conducting him to his residence, where I handed over to His Honor the keys to the warehouses, paper cabinets, and those to the secret chest (sealed), communicating that apart from the contents hereof no matters of any importance had occurred. Having most earnestly recommended both these matters to the said spokesman, he promised me to present them in the best manner. Fruideman, I obtained an extraordinarily friendly hearing, and thanked His Honor for his kind recommendation to which I attributed the reason that I had obtained an audience at court so quickly, that Lord congratulating me both on the prosperous journey and the successful execution of affairs at court, and on my safe return. Tuesday the 15th ordered the reporters to request permission from the Lord Governor to send commissioners to Magomee in order to survey the repairs of the sampans. Wednesday the 16th the abovementioned request was granted, but could not proceed on account of the bad weather. Thursday the 17th no progress. Friday the 18th the reporter Katsiemon came very early to inform me that today again no commissioners could be sent to inspect the sampans, because the Governor intended to inspect the Imperial and other guard posts, as I also saw that the first mentioned guard was replaced by the servants of the feudal lord of Siquiseen who were sent thither. Subsequently, having a writing in readiness, containing a request to the Lord Governor, in order to obtain a profitable trade, as well as an assurance to His Honour that although the debt of the Honourable Company might tend to be higher than in the two unfortunate years of 1750 and 1768, I, together with the Honourable Armenault, would bind myself in writing to the repayment thereof in the year Cuturi. Monday the 27th. Sent some more drinking water to Gansenhoeff, while throughout the entire day nothing but northerly winds blew. Tuesday the 28th. Nothing happened. Throughout the entire day, south-westerly winds. Wednesday the 29th. This afternoon the Imperial agent arrived, having with him a small piece of paper with white and grayish bristles which, according to his statement, were said to have been found five days ago on various houses in the city and surrounding villages, and which according to their presumption had rained down upon them, the same having also occurred in the past year in Osaccy and Miaco; the interpreter asking in the name of the Lord Commissioner whether such a thing also fell in our country, to which I answered him that I had never seen such a thing. On this occasion I inquired after the latest writing handed over to the Lord Governor, the interpreter saying that it had been presented to His Honour yesterday, but that its approval was very much doubted, though the utmost efforts of the Lord Governor would nevertheless be employed toward a favourable outcome. Toward the evening a junk arrived in the roads. Thursday the 30th. Nothing happened. Friday the 31st. This morning around nine o'clock, all the chief interpreters came to my residence, whereupon I had the Honourable Armenault asked whether he wished to attend this conversation, as I maintained that whenever the Company's affairs were treated of, the incoming Chief ought to be present, as has also been done by me from the very beginning. Gennemon gave to understand that the Lord Governor made a difficulty about the debt running higher than in the year 1760, yet adding thereto that he could not yet give a definite decision, but that the Lord Commissioner would nevertheless use his utmost endeavors to incline the Lord Governor to grant the Honourable Company such an export as in the year 1768. To which we answered them that we could not understand what the Lord Governor was afraid of in not being willing to grant the Honourable Company more than in the said year, since the Lord Governor surely had the example of the year 1758, and that the Company had always in the following year brought so much more merchandise, wherewith the debt of the preceding year was only then satisfied, and that we had also promised the same in our petition of the 27th of this month; further requesting those interpreters also to do their best toward that agreement so as not to leave the Honourable Company at a loss in these distressing circumstances; but if the Governor could not be persuaded, then to propose to His Honour in our name to halve the gifts in general and all expenses, at which they all appeared to be dismayed, and gave in answer that they had not expected such a thing, adding thereto that if we remained of that opinion, it was also to be feared that the Governor would not grant us any more than the amount of the brought-in merchandise came to, clearly advising against the same, and at the same time requesting that we might wish to discharge it.
