Batavia To his Honour The High Noble, Severe, Right Honourable Lord Petrus Albertus van der Parra Governor-General Together with The Noble, Severe Lords Councillors of the Dutch Indies High Noble, Right Honourable Lord And Noble, Severe Lords The ship De Vrouwe Margaretha Maria having arrived here safely on 6 August with the loss of its mainmast and topmast, as well as the fore and mizzen topmasts and the rigging belonging thereto, and your High Noble Right Honours' most esteemed letter of 19 June of this year, together with its annexes according to the registers, having been delivered to us by it, we consider it our duty, upon the return of that vessel to the capital of the Indies, to have the honour to reply thereto by this document and to report what has occurred here of any importance since the departure of our latest humble letter of 9 November 1771, while, with the kind permission of your High Noble Right Honours, in order to observe all possible brevity with regard to the circumstances accompanying what is to be reported, and leaving out what is of little essence, we respectfully refer in all respects to the Daily Register kept here and on the voyage to Edo, which now and in subsequent years, according to the intention of the Lords Seventeen, is to be transmitted in duplicate for the Netherlands to your High Noble Right Honours. To follow the thread of the aforementioned esteemed letter of your High Noble Right Honours, we initially, under the article of Ships and Vessels, learned with particular joy of the safe return to Batavia of the vessels Burgh and Walcheren, which departed from here last year, and we sincerely wish that the Company, by Heaven's goodness, may long be preserved and spared in future from such severe blows as have struck it for some years, and recently through the wreck of Ganzenhoef, and now again this year all too grievously with the ship Burgh. Regarding this last-mentioned vessel, we find ourselves obliged, with the most painful sorrow, to inform your High Noble Right Honours of the sad misfortune that befell it at 31 degrees North latitude through a hurricane that arose on 30 July and raged most terribly until the 31st of the same month, whereby it not only came to lose all its spars and entire rigging, but also started so much at the seams and became so leaky that, notwithstanding the fact that all hands were continuously busy, both day and night without any intermission, to clear the water already taken in as much as possible with all the pumps, it nevertheless increased against them so violently that all hands would undoubtedly have had to perish had not, through the mercy and wondrous guidance of the Lord in the uttermost distress, this vessel appeared (which had likewise lost some spars and rigging, but had nevertheless suffered no leakage), onto which the Chief Factor Armenault, with all the remaining crew, crossed over, as they saw not the slightest hope of saving the wreck, there being already nine feet of water in it, which kept violently increasing more and more. All of this can be seen more broadly and in greater detail in the extract from the journal kept on that vessel, now sent among the annexes, as well as the resolution taken in the ship's council under the date of 2 August, to the tenor of which, to avoid repetition, we most respectfully refer. However, before we entirely depart from this article, we find ourselves obliged to inform your High Noble Right Honours further that on 24 August the collective interpreters and the cross-examiner came to communicate to us, in the name and on behalf of the Governor of Nagasaki, that they had obtained news from the Goto Islands regarding a dismasted European ship discovered by fishermen about 15 Japanese miles west of those islands, at the same time handing us a translation of a letter sent hither by the Lord of Goto concerning the distinguishing marks of the same, from all of which reported circumstances we judged that it must be the ship Burgh abandoned by us. Wherefore we set everything in motion, both by presenting petitions to the Governor and whatever else we judged to be in any way necessary and useful in these circumstances.

But as the Japanese doubt whether the said wreck will arrive before the departure of this vessel, we find ourselves unable for the present to give Your Right Honorable Grand Worships any further and complete report in that regard. Wishing furthermore that this now returning vessel, without encountering adversity, freed from all disasters and misfortunes, may accomplish the voyage thither happily and prosperously, along with our humble expression of thanks for the favorably passed expenses amounting to ƒ583: 9:—: expended for the making of a new Chiampang in the year 1771, just as we have found ourselves this year, because of the hurricane that recently raged here and destroyed two of those vessels in such a manner that they are entirely irreparable, once again under an unavoidable necessity to have one good one made out of the two broken ones, in addition to a completely new one, all appearing more broadly from what was noted in that regard in the Daily Register on the 1st and 7th of August, also very humbly requesting that it may please Your Right Honorable Grand Worships to honor our conduct observed in that respect with Your highest favorable approval, as well as also favorably to pass the expenses expended for the making of the aforementioned new Chiampang, as we were impossibly able to avoid the same, amounting to taels 395-: or ƒ651:15: although th: 41: 4:- or ƒ 68: 6:—: more than the past year, as the aforementioned excess originates principally from the present excessive costliness of timber, arising from the scarcity of the same, because many of those building materials were washed away with the high flood in the latest hurricane, and through which people here have fallen into a great lack of the same for the rebuilding of the collapsed dwelling and warehouses. While assuring that we shall continually observe Your highest renewed order of 23 May 1670 relating to the keeping and sending of a duplicate of the muster roll of the ships departing from here. We furthermore have the honor to impart that the ship the Vrouwe Margaretha Maria, upon its arrival, duly delivered its cargo conform to the invoice, and that its transport thither according to the accompanying specified bill of lading amounts in total to ƒ180198: 14:8:. Under the main head of Commerce, with particular relation to the first-mentioned trade articles of the same, we find ourselves obliged with regret to testify that whatever trouble has been taken, as well by us in general as by the Chiefs in particular, to persuade and induce the Japanese, conform to Your Right Honorable Grand Worships' very respected letters, to an increase of copper, in the manner recorded in the daily register on the 11th of August, 2 and 8th of September, all that however has been able to avail nothing, as we have received back our written request regarding that without any success, with the reasons thereof put into writing and signed by the interpreters, so that we have again had to content ourselves with 9000 chests, or the assessment stipulated in the year 1768, holding ourselves assured that Your Right Honorable Grand Worships, in Your highest known equity, will not attribute the poor success of our efforts in this to a lack of our zeal in looking after the precious interests of the Company. Meanwhile, 5300 of the aforementioned 9000 chests are being sent over to Your Right Honorable Grand Worships, so that here there still remain as a balance 3700 chests. fabrics required for the emperor, as well as of our conducted transaction with the grograms which we sold on the authorization of your Right Honourable Great Respectable Lordships, but to our regret with a loss of 16 3/8 percent notwithstanding all possible efforts to obtain a higher price, as appears from the daily register and Resolution of September 19, while we at the same time most respectfully assure your Right Honourable Great Respectable Lordships that we will in the future constantly govern ourselves according to the recommendation that it has pleased the very same to convey to us with respect to the broadcloths that were found to be too narrow and defective. We also express our gratitude for the restitution to the Opperhoofd Armenault of ƒ 8217:—: which the same had allowed here to serve in reduction of ƒ 22080:6:— for which the treasury should have been credited after the conclusion of trade in 1771, with the communication that in the now again concluded trading season we found the opportunity to settle the remainder of that debt up to ƒ 13863:6:— by the converting of manufactures, but to our regret, having fallen behind again this year because of the vexatious case of Burgh, and accordingly having had to pass a promissory note of ƒ 52905:8:—, we will likewise not fail to liquidate this by the converting of merchandises either in the forthcoming quiet season or in the trading season to follow thereafter. For the goods sold in the now concluded trade we negotiated ordinary prices, except for the grograms, concerning which we most respectfully refer to that which we have already had the honour to report here before on that account. The presentation of the general expenses and profits will be arranged according to the model of the visitor-general sent to us by your Right Honourable Great Respectable Lordships, and accordingly the special comparison of the same against the past year will be formed item by item in the Opperhoofden Report. We furthermore, with respect to the copper, in order to avoid repetitions, most respectfully refer to what we have already had the honor to report with regret hereabove under trade. 15 To survey the state of everything, only Captain van Ewijk, together with the scribe Geerling and the bookkeeper Schuts, was dispatched to seal everything until the required permission was obtained, as appears from the Daily Register under date of 12 October. Furthermore, in the session of 13 October, upon the communication of the first undersigned that the money chamber had requested to allow the proceeds that might still come from the cargo of the wreck to serve for the upcoming trading season, we resolved to condescend to that request, and to order the trade bookkeeper to take in the cargo of the wreck of Burgh according to invoice, and to let it continue under the remaining stock until next year. Meanwhile, the outgoing Governor had us asked definitively whether we saw any chance of putting the wreck in a state to be able to make the return voyage towards Batavia, requesting at the same time a prompt answer thereto, in order to be enabled to make the required report in that regard upon his arrival in Jedo. Therefore, after obtaining the previously required permission, Captain Steendecker, together with Chief Mate van der Kloot and Second Mate Robel, was commissioned, due to the indisposition of both ship's carpenters, to survey the aforementioned wreck accurately and closely with the carpenter of this island. After their performance, they reported in writing that the same was very battered and entirely irreparable, as appears from the report transmitted among the appendices, whereupon we resolved, as appears from the Resolution of 13 October, to request to set that hull on the mud before they began to unload it, to be viewed in more detail in the Daily Register of 13 October. This request having been condescended to by the governor, we immediately had the same brought onto the mud by Captain van Ewijk, after which a beginning was made with its unloading. Meanwhile, the first undersigned was informed by the Chief Interpreter Soejemon, who had been to fetch the wreck, after his return, that the same had lain drifting back and forth about 15 miles west of the Gettos for fully 10 days before the territorial lord had obtained knowledge of it, and that in that meantime, in all likelihood, the fishermen sailing back and forth in those parts daily must have been on board and plundered it, as upon his arrival on the same he had found all hatches, doors, chests, and cases smashed open and to pieces, and the last-mentioned for the most part filled with all kinds of filth instead of goods, and in addition he had furthermore sealed all the doors and hatches, just as we indeed also found all the aforesaid to be so, all appearing more amply in the Daily Register under date of 15 October; and furthermore, upon unloading, the chests and cases being brought ashore were for the most part battered and broken, and some of the spice chests completely wet through, as well as the case with writing stationery, which, having been opened by the commissioners, according to their report was found to indeed contain everything conformable to the packing slip, but entirely wet, rotten, and consequently unusable, on which account it was decided by Resolution of 21 October to have the same written off in that quality in the trade books of the upcoming year, and in the meantime to have the seals burned by the commissioners, just as also upon unpacking the European manufactured goods, Bengal silk fabrics, and Coromandel linens, several of them, conformable to the sworn statement of the commissioners transmitted among the appendices, were found wet throughout, stained, and damaged, and of the sugar canassers, the sugar therein was entirely melted and leaked out, likewise the coloring strength of the sappanwood was of little effect, as it had been almost entirely drawn out by the saltiness of the sea water under which it had lain so long, and the rice was entirely spoiled; while we furthermore, in hope of favorable approval, assigned from the provisions still obtained from the wreck to Captain Steendecker, to supplement what was still lacking from his submission at the session of 19 September

submitted, and now among the enclosures forwarded, requisition of the required victuals for 2½ months ration for 189 heads provided, and have stored and sheltered the remainders here, along with the ammunition and equipment goods, because the skipper Steendecker, by a written declaration also forwarded among the enclosures and presented at the meeting of the 21st of October, testified that he could load none of the aforementioned without exposing his underlying vessel to danger, except solely that which was also presented at the last-mentioned session by the first draftsman as a requisition for such timber and cordage, sails and nails from those goods as he necessarily required for use, whereupon it was also resolved to deliver the same to him, under condition to account for it at Batavia. Furthermore, having had a parcel of the wet and stained gingham taffachelas washed, we requested experts to inspect the same to see whether they would still be usable and saleable, but since the Japanese put off our request and desire from day to day with a multitude of frivolous pretexts and far-fetched excuses, we find ourselves unable, due to the shortness of time, to communicate the outcome thereof herewith, wherefore we most respectfully defer to that which the Opperhoofd Feith will come to report to Your High Nobilities in his report to be made in this regard. And since we well foresaw that it was impossible for the wreck to be emptied before the departure of this vessel, whereby one would be obliged in the subsequent period to incur great expenses for its further discharge, both in coolie and watchman wages, we attempted to persuade the interpreters to present a document from us to the Governor, containing a request to be allowed to retain a mate with a few crew members in order to entirely discharge that hull, to clear it, and subsequently to look after it; but they were not to be persuaded thereto and flatly refused it, saying that they dared by no means venture to appear before the Governor with such a document, as they were fully convinced it would cost them dearly. Furthermore, after all papers had already for the most part been prepared, the interpreters came with an account of the expenses incurred on the wreck, namely for towing wages taels 12889: 5: 4:—: 4, and for guard boats and the watchmen who had guarded the same, taels 13414:1:8:9:9, of which first-mentioned, to avoid all displeasure, we were absolutely obliged to execute a document to satisfy the same in the coming year, under an absolute declaration that we could not do so with respect to the last-mentioned sum before and until we were authorized thereto by Your High Nobilities; whereupon they said that if we were disinclined to the satisfaction thereof, the Lord of Gotto would then have to pay the same, as being territorial dues, out of his private purse; therefore we most humbly request to be honored with your esteemed orders in this regard. Expenses on sampans run higher this year by ƒ 540. 17. 8., primarily caused by the dreadful heavy hurricane that raged on the island of Deshima on the first of August last, whereby two sampans were completely shattered to pieces and rendered unusable, and one was forced to have a good one made from them, and I had to send the deputies twice this year to Megami to inspect those vessels and assess the necessary repairs to them. Having thus, as briefly as possible, demonstrated with dutiful respect the state and outcome of the trade recently conducted in this Japanese Empire, which certainly, in comparison with the previous year, has declined remarkably, I nevertheless very humbly trust, pursuant to your High Excellencies' well-known equity, that your High Excellencies will be pleased not to impute this to a lack of our zeal for the attending of the Honorable Company's precious interests, but on the contrary favorably to agree that this is a notorious consequence of all the misfortunes that occurred this year, the circumstances of which are detailed more broadly both in our submissive outgoing letters and in the kept daily journal; therefore, in order not to inconvenience your High Excellencies' precious attention with duplicate reports, I will respectfully refer to these, with humble supplication that it may please your High Excellencies to crown our dealings and transactions with your favorable approbation and approval.
