Adding thereto, that he had found himself obliged to report this illicit trade to his Lord Father, as well as the luxuriant growth of nutmegs in Onin, or woni, on the mainland of Nova guinea, which District, for that reason, had also become a notorious trading place for these spice nuts. And whereas he thought he noticed that his father seemed to disregard a discovery of such importance, while he (the Young King), on the contrary, foresaw that if no forceful measures were employed to stop that illicit trade in spices, the Company would over time suffer great damage thereby, and even that the above-mentioned peoples would be seduced thereby to persist more and more in their disobedience and apostasy, he had, for these reasons, resolved to disclose his thoughts and suspicions to the Governor, and at the same time to propose whether His Honour might not see fit to extirpate the spice crop in the said lands of pattanie, Maba, and weda; in which case he (the Young Prince) offered to serve, on the Tidorese side, as the head of that expedition, if his father were willing to grant him consent thereto; since he dared boast that under his supervision nothing would be hidden or passed over, and that the work of extirpation would then be carried out in such a manner that both the Company and the Tidorese Realm would perceive the good effects thereof for years thereafter, on the grounds that he maintained that the destruction in those regions had never yet been executed faithfully, and that the natives had hitherto always misled the extirpators in that work, and kept some spice locations hidden. Further declaring that with this offer of his service he intended nothing other than to show his affection for the Company, and at the same time, if he should at any time come to the Government, not to be continually disturbed by all kinds of distressing news of the ruinous spice trade of these apostate subjects, whose forbidden merchandise ought now to be utterly extirpated, since he regarded the same just as harmful thistles and thorns with which his Realm was otherwise destined to be sown and filled. Upon which reasons the undersigned Governor had given the Young Prince the answer that, although everything he had conveyed to him regarding this propagation and smuggling trade of the spice fruit was fully known to His Honour from the successive reports received, he nevertheless deemed himself obliged to thank the Young Prince for his discovery and well-meaning intention, for which reason he also undertook to inform the High Indian Government of his proposal, and of the zeal which His Highness showed for promoting the welfare of the Honourable Company; at the same time promising him, upon his strong urging, to request Their High Excellencies to keep this proposal secret in their rescription to his Lord Father, and to make no mention that he (the Young King) had offered his person to carry out this commission. For which promise the oft-mentioned Young Prince expressed his gratitude, who was subsequently asked by the Governor in what manner he thought our extirpators would, at the present juncture, be received by the oft-mentioned peoples of pattanie and their neighbours, in case Their High Excellencies should see fit to dispatch a commission for that purpose to these districts on the 20th of January, 1772; and whether he judged that these Nations would render our people the required assistance in extirpating, as they were bound to do according to the contracts; or rather, whether he thought that they would seek to prevent that destruction and oppose themselves against the extirpators? His Highness says that it is entirely unknown to him that any Amblauwers are being kept by his son the young king, but that he would make it his business, upon his return to Tidor, to inquire into this immediately, and send these people hither, if they are found. Wherefore one must also in the strongest terms urge the prince to take care that the last-mentioned place is likewise completed without intermission, while our commissioners are still present there; who otherwise would waste their time uselessly and at the expense of the Company in a district where at present nothing is to be obtained. Whereas a certain Amblauwer addressed the Governor some days ago and made known that four of his countrymen, who were related to him by blood, had been captured some time ago by the Papuans, whose petty kings had given these people to the young king of Tidor, with whom they still resided; and therefore requested that the Governor might arrange that these poor people might be set at liberty again; so one shall present the reasonable petition of this native in pressing terms to Tidor's king. And whereas the rumor now began to spread everywhere that the young king of Tidor was also guilty of and present at the murder committed about three weeks ago on the land of Halmahera upon the wife of the bookkeeper and resident of Quandang, De Wolff, and upon seventeen other persons, with whom that woman had departed thither to go fishing, the council members were all of the opinion that such murderers, who did not hesitate to take the lives of Company servants and Christians, could not be included under the recently published amnesty proclamation, and that one therefore could by no means let this case pass in silence, but that one was even obliged to prevent and hinder such far-reaching acts of violence in the future, by all such means as might arouse some fear and reflection among the willful Tidorese. For which considerations it was unanimously resolved to confer with Tidor's king in secret about this case, to make known our displeasure in this regard, and if it was found that the said accusation was well-founded, to insist most earnestly with the king to punish the murderers, without respect of persons, or to deliver them into our hands. After Tidor's king had been addressed in the most emphatic terms regarding this case, and he had somewhat calmed down from the shock that the representation made to him had aroused, he gave to understand, while uttering heavy oaths, that although it pained him very much to have to hear such rumors, he nevertheless would wish nothing more than to strike his son's head from his trunk, if he could only be convicted by two credible witnesses of having made himself guilty of this gruesome deed. But since, according to the king, even the most virtuous people were exposed to the slanderous tongues of the malicious, and could well be accused of misdeeds that had never entered their thoughts, he requested very politely to be allowed to know who were the accusers of his son: whereupon His Highness was answered by the Governor that it would be difficult to produce witnesses of this fact, but that he nevertheless undertook to have those who revealed any further details of this murder to him interrogated in the presence of Tidorese commissioners, just as he, the Governor, would also make every effort to get at the truth of this matter. With which assurance His Highness was satisfied, and this negotiation came to an end. May 20, 1772. After the conclusion of the above-mentioned conversation with the king, which was dealt with behind closed doors in a separate room in the presence of the Council and the three previously mentioned Tidorese court servants, His Highness took some refreshments, after which he was escorted with the customary honors by commissioners to the jetty, from whence the prince, together with his retinue, under the roaring of the artillery of this castle, immediately turned their bow towards Tidor. Could foresee from all the circumstances that the King, according to the Tidorese custom, would quickly forget his promises to send the said Radja hither in 25 days. For further elucidation of the rumor that the Young King of Tidor was present, and might even be complicit in the murder committed against Miss Wolff and her company, it was further resolved to note herewith that, notwithstanding the King of Tidor and his secretary Abdul Rauoff acted as if they had not the slightest knowledge of this atrocious deed, it nevertheless appears fully established—both from the bodies of these eighteen murdered persons found on Tidorese territory, and from their fishing nets which the Tidorese have sought to sell here—that this misdeed was committed by the last-mentioned nation. The council members moreover recalled that the King had for some time carefully informed this ministry of all particulars, and especially of the manslaughters that had occurred on his lands during the latest troubles, and that this notable case nevertheless appears to have been carefully concealed by them. From this singular conduct of the King of Tidor, they could conclude nothing other than that he must have had weightier reasons for observing a deep silence concerning this matter. Moreover, since it was already stated in our general resolution of 25 April last that the Young King was previously also accused of having been present at the hostile raid which the Tidorese conducted on 21 March against the Makian village of Ngoffagieta, these considerations reinforced the Council all the more in the suspicion that he can by no means be cleared of the murder committed against Miss Wolff and company. And since the frequently mentioned Young King, on account of his turbulent and fierce nature, generally has such a bad reputation that it is to be feared that a prince of such an evil disposition might in time well prove detrimental to our peace and to the interests of the Honorable Company, or that he, coming to power in time, might apply his understanding and judgment—of which he is by no means deprived—to the formation of detrimental practices, it was decided to give Their High Nobilities due notice thereof, and to enable these our High Rulers to make use of this warning for the general good. From Makassar, 10 June 1772: — From Makassar, 10 June 1772 — Concerning the native affairs in Your Right Noble Honours' highly esteemed secret letter of 31 December last, we take the liberty of respectfully assuring Your Right Noble Honours that, just as we feel an inner joy regarding this, we find ourselves no less stimulated thereby to redouble our forces and capabilities to observe more and more the true interests of our lords and masters in general, and especially with regard to this all-important point of the Celebes establishment here, in the hope that Heaven will be pleased to grant its further blessing thereto, to the end that the peace presently still continuing everywhere may remain permanent. From Makassar the 10th of June 1772 From Makassar the 10th of June 1772 we shall endeavor to divert the prince of Boni from all warlike sentiments, which he nevertheless seems no longer to harbor so very much toward the Mandarese as one might previously have deduced from his discourses, and this undoubtedly because he sees well that the Company is not inclined thereto. Yet we cannot omit informing Your Right Excellencies in this regard that, among other allies invited by His Highness to attend the aforementioned marriage of his daughter, the Datu of Sidenreng was also included, but he not only failed to appear, but even refused to grant an audience to the king's envoy Aru Udjung. This having exceedingly angered His Highness, he caused orders to be given to his grandees of state to deliberate regarding the satisfaction that one ought to demand for this insult. In the meantime, rumors having been spread that the Datu of Sidenreng was about to come down with a large force of vessels to proceed to Tallo, and it having even been proposed by some, though advised against by the Ponggawa, to await him and attack him in a hostile manner, which counsel was then also followed, it had the result that the Datu of Sidenreng, who indeed departed for Tallo, was left unmolested; whereas otherwise, although having only three vessels and thus showing not the slightest sign of having anything evil in mind, he would have run great danger. The same is still staying at Tallo, and one will have to wait and see from time what will come of this, while we cannot yet interfere directly therein so long as the Queen of Tallo causes no application to be made to the Company for that purpose, whether to ask pardon for him or to settle the matter in another manner, just as in all respects her duty dictates, since he is her son-in-law and she is very much interested therein. That something else is hiding behind this, we have had to deduce from what was said by the Queen of Tanete to the chief interpreter Brugman on the 3rd of March, namely that the prince of Boni was himself the cause of the conduct pursued by the Datu of Sidenreng, as having had him invited by his bitterest enemy, which serves as a proof that he himself sought a quarrel, the reason for which may well be revealed in due time. Your Right Excellencies' remark that the king's answer to the complaints presented to him by the Ambon ministers concerning the navigation of his subjects to Ceram is by no means satisfactory to us, we can contradict as little as we would ever have dared to assure that no Boniers are to be found who visit the aforementioned place as well as the Wajorese, Mandarese, and Torajas; on the contrary, it is well known that Boniers are frequently among all that kind of smugglers. But since on our part we employ everything possible to counter that harmful navigation and grant no passes further than what is permitted, it were indeed to be wished that it might please Your Right Excellencies to order the Ambon administration that, in case any smugglers who are truly Boniers should happen to be caught in those waters, to send the same under guard hither at an opportunity, in order to be able then to convince the prince of that which he now steadfastly continues to deny. Just as in the past year, we have once again been compelled on the 6th of February and 25th of May last to lodge complaints with the prince concerning the insolent deeds of one of His Highness's nephews named Daeng Manjarungi in the province of Maros, and although His Highness does indeed give orders to counter such things, however much one has again urged the regent concerning the discharge of the debts, nothing has come of it thus far, seeing that this minister continues to excuse himself under all kinds of pretexts, making promises that he is exerting all possible efforts to discharge the same; so that Your Right Excellencies, if you please, will be able to inspect the secret daily register under the dates 29 November, 17 February, 14 April, and 30 May last, with which we shall have to content ourselves for now, and soon, should nothing come of it, also cause him to be addressed further.

whilst she, being persuaded by his Highness to consent to it in the hope or the certain prospect of being able, through his help, to be restored to the Loewoese dominion—which we suspected would primarily be able to induce her thereto—could in time easily become once again the plaything of the prince's fickle and quarrelsome nature by having her cast off again; so we judged it to be of the utmost necessity to have our concerns and the difficulties to be feared from this marriage presented to Her Highness indirectly, in order that, if it were not entirely possible to oppose the same, at least in the future not to be subject to reproach, or rather to be able to convince her afterwards that she had been warned in time, if she should happen to complain about her situation; in such manner, the one and the other was also made known to her, on the orders of the first-signed, by the Lieutenant of the Malays, Intje Sadoulla; and considering from his report, recorded in the Daily Register under the 5th of April, it was evident that she was not entirely averse to it, although, when spoken to about it a second time by the same, according to the report under the 14th of the same month, she showed herself very indifferent; Having received report whereof, the Pongauwa immediately sent thither in all silence a large vessel with armed men under his Captain Labidoella, under the pretext of wishing to help settle the disputes, but in fact with the intention of committing new hostilities, having given them a multitude of shackle bolts to put into chains any prisoners they might take, as if he were already assured of the victory. This turned out quite differently, as that force was not only almost entirely defeated and partly taken prisoner, but the aforementioned Labidoella and Craeng Balandangang were also severely wounded, and the former's brother was killed there. The King of Boni, having received knowledge of the troubles in Touratta without anyone daring to tell him that the Pongauwa had a hand in it, and the Queen of Tanette having thereupon been requested by him, according to custom, to help clear them away, in which, however, she seemed not to take much pleasure, possibly also for the sake of the Pongauwa, the first undersigned, who received report of this, had her urged on the 6th of October last that she could not withdraw herself from that matter and that he judged it highly necessary that she give the King a full disclosure of the true state of affairs. Concerning whose prince Mappa it appeared in hindsight that we were not unfounded in our suspicion that the report of our messenger sent to Mandhar would be erroneous, seeing that the Malay Captain received a brief letter from him on the 11th of December, wherein he indicated that the Mandharese had sent envoys to him to make known the compensation ordained to them by Boni to the Company for the captured barque and their request for his advice. And that he, if the Governor approved such, intended to answer them that the Company's claim was not too great and, the Maradia of Madgen alone being well able to pay the same, it would be better to await the Company's and Boni's power, with the further offer that in case the Company wished to attack them, he was prepared to betake himself thither and take possession of a safe roadstead so that the force could land there. Whereupon he was answered in writing that the Company, seeking as much as ever possible to avoid the shedding of blood, would rather see this matter settled amicably, and he would therefore do best to admonish them most earnestly to make satisfaction, pointing out that the proposal also made by him to demand forty vessels from them under pretext of helping the Mandharese against their attackers, in order to make himself master thereof,

From Macaser, the 10th of June 1772 to remain would be completely unadvisable and acting in bad faith. Upon this, on the 18th of January, we received a second letter containing, in addition to a declaration of his joy at the Company's and the Governor's affection, the answer given by him to the emissaries. From this it appears that he executed what was proposed to him according to the intention, and therefore most earnestly admonished those of Mandhaar to pay the demanded sum, pointing out to them that it need cost them very little, merely a schelling per subject. Regarding this, in our reply of the 29th thereafter, our particular satisfaction was conveyed to him, and likewise how the first undersigned, gladly wishing that a reconciliation could be effected with his father-in-law the King of Bonij, would do his utmost to that end. For this we had some hope at the time, because it had been told to us that His Highness had mentioned Mappa's name three times, which is regarded as a sign of affection, but which we have since had to give up because of the tokens we experienced of the Prince's persistent hatred against him. This hatred has perhaps been increased again by the answer given to the request made to him by the three exiled Soping state nobles, last mentioned in our respectful letter of the 5th of June 1770, conforming to the daily register under the date of the 18th of January past, to be received again into Soping, namely that he could not and would not agree to it without the Company's prior knowledge as far as their persons were concerned, but permitted it to their subjects, who have also for the most part already taken advantage of it. Notwithstanding that on the 6th of December previously, and thus four days before the receipt of Mappa's first letter, upon the return of a certain vessel of Captain Malijer with a trusted emissary sent to Mandhaer to discover the disposition of that nation regarding the demanded satisfaction, report was received that the Papoeangers, regents of the Maradias of Balanipa and Madjene who had been here, were to be dismissed from their offices because they had promised and undertaken that satisfaction, and that preparations were being made to be able to offer resistance in case they were attacked, we nevertheless thought, from what was communicated by Mappa, that we might flatter ourselves that they had changed their minds. But we have up to now heard nothing from them, and must thus await what effect the letter will have which Your Right Excellencies were pleased to write to the Prince of Bonij, which was only collected by his commissioners on the 18th of the past month, the communication of its receipt having been postponed for some days after the arrival of the [illegible] in order not to hinder the conveyance of the dowry to His Highness's daughter. But that there is no reason to expect much from it should, in our opinion, be deduced from a certain statement made on the 11th of December past by one of the Pongauwa's pawns to the License Master, that his master in that respect only had his own interest in view, on the occasion that he informed the said License Master that he had heard that the Mandharese were soon to send emissaries with five thousand Spanish dollars in reduction of the demand, who had it replied to him that it would work greatly to his honour, fame, and advantage if he could arrange that they should satisfy it, even if only a part at first; in which connection it must be considered that presents have already actually been made to the King and the Pongauwa upon the arrival of the aforementioned Papoeangers, besides that, according to the report of the said confidant, a collection had once again been held for the same purpose. Far from the recent mission to this realm for the extirpation of spice trees having had better success than in the previous year, it appears from the daily report of the Sergeant Commissioner Steijnbach, who with his men in the company of the envoy the Mantrie Zalaijoe returned here on the 28th of January past, that he, just like others, was thwarted in the execution of his commission in all manner of ways and under various frivolous pretexts, so that not a single tree was seen by him, much less extirpated, although there is no reason to doubt that they are found in some districts. All of which, added to the now increasing illicit trade around those parts, the admission of an English ship into the roadstead and the trade carried on with the same, along with the attendance of its captain at court, according to the note in the said report under the date of the 11th of August, the sending of no more than three slaves in reduction of the state debt instead of at least forty-two heads, the mere surrender of four sailors of the crew of the sloop de Nooteboom, and the weak far-fetched excuses regarding the same.

From Makassar, the 10th of June 1742. appearing from two letters received from there, clearly seems to show that this court, casting all admonitions to the wind, cares little more for the Company, which causes not a little concern that evil consequences will come of it, and particularly from the admission of Englishmen, concerning which the commissioner at the same time reports that in the previous year a ship of that nation had already called there and secret negotiations had already been entered into with the same, which has indeed mainly caused us to contemplate means to bring that faithless court to reason and to the return of their duty, among which, in the first place, owing to our slight power to maintain a cruising patrol of any significance, the intercession of the King of Boni occurred to us. It was for that reason that the first-signed paid an express visit to His Highness on the 15th of February and set forth to him the state of affairs, together with the evil consequences that would in time necessarily arise to the ruin of the realm of Buton, with the request to help employ his influence alongside the Company to prevent the same, in order to make those of Buton change their conduct, with this result: His Highness, showing himself very willing thereto, not only promised to confer with the King about this by letter, but also to send express envoys thither, which he also carried out after the letter had been drafted by the first-signed and fully approved by him. Meanwhile, we have been able to discover neither from the envoys nor from the aforementioned letter whom they actually mean by the slave traders, and have accordingly given them solely in reply that we did not wish to deprive them of the right to apprehend all illicit traders to be handed over to the Company, and furthermore have also ordered the Commandant to leave nothing unattempted in order to seize or ensnare the notorious Tjalla Bancoolen, who is as harmful to that quarter as the Englishmen themselves and comes there annually from Bencoolen with trade, with authorization to grant a bounty for this purpose if necessary, even if it were five to six hundred guilders or even somewhat more, considering that Kraeng Bella Sarie, mother of the fled King of Dompo, might possibly be of assistance therein, whom we have otherwise ordered to move from Sumbawa and return to Bima, on account of the suspicion residing in her stay because of her correspondence, to be mentioned hereafter, with the King of Selaparang Gusti Wayahan Taga, regarding whom we now have to report that the appearance which arose during the last reports of the Ensign Secerfe, that he was not disinclined to enter into an alliance with the Company, has since appeared to us to be noticeably diminished if not entirely vanished; for apart from the fact that the letter which we received upon the arrival of two of his envoys in their own vessel on the 5th of November makes not a word of mention of the proposal made to him, and on the contrary contains nothing but bitter reproaches about the cruising carried out towards the opposite shore in the year 1770 and the capture of the vessel in question, as well as the apprehension in a previous expedition under Captain-Commandant Seterse of a certain Sappa Djabar and Sappa Djoema, both sent to Batavia along with the documents concerning the charges against them in the year 1769, his aversion to the Company appears clearly to us from a missive written by him to the Ensign Secerfe, and in two others intercepted by the latter, written to the aforementioned Kraeng Bella Sarie, who stays now at Bima and then again at Sumbawa, considering that in the first, among other things, he says in substance that he was writing a separate letter to His Right Honourable the Lord Governor-General to help remind His Honour so that the Dutch might continue to govern their lodge at Ujung Pandang in peace, and further adds that although this might still last long, in his view that great difficulty would come one day, whilst in the one to the aforementioned Kraeng Bella Sarie he asks for information whether the Sumbawanese presently sided with the Dutch and whether matters had changed on that account, as well as also therein and in the second whether the Wadjos were forced to move from Sumbawa; so that, if Your Right Honourables please, this will appear more fully from the copies of all the same annexed hereto, respectfully referring thereto, we now report that the envoys having been sent hither to obtain transport from here to Batavia, we have found ourselves unable to provide them with such for lack of opportunity, the more so as the wet monsoon already began to blow too strongly upon their arrival, so that it would have been too hazardous to employ one of the Company's sloops or pantjallangs for this purpose, wherefore, and whereas they declared that they could not wait until the spring, we were obliged to resolve to let them return, so that on the 16th of November they departed again with the two letters brought by them addressed to Your Right Honourables, accompanied by the originals written to him by Mr. Boelen and the first-signed, and furthermore with such reply from the first-signed as Your Right Honourables will also see from the copy thereof, in which, notwithstanding what has been said, his bitter language regarding the cruisings is refuted in very civil terms, he is referred to Your Right Honourables for the requested information concerning Bappa Djabar and Bappa Djoema, and again in accordance with Your Right Honourables' esteemed intention, as we learn from behind to our joy, the same.
