the trade on this Coast, which must nevertheless also be carefully guarded, it was resolved and agreed upon the further proposal of the Governor to request the Ceylon Ministers to assist this Government, in addition to the small chest of gold brought thither for the same by the ship Oud Haarlem, as soon as possible with a further 70 to 80,000 pagodas, whether in uncoined gold or in coined pagodas themselves, and in the meantime also to urge the Commander and Council at Jaffanapatnam to send hither forthwith 30,000 pagodas in reduction of that amount, and at the same time to give notice thereof to the first-mentioned Ministers for their information, just as for those same reasons it was also decided to order the Chiefs of Jaggernaijkpoeram to send hither from their supply of cash a sum of 40 to 50,000 pagodas with the sloops that are to return from there, and in exchange to send thither with the sloop De Nagtegaal 600 bars of silver for the minting of rupees, since the aforesaid pagodas are not needed there, and the servants, being in want of them with the coming spring, could always be sent thither again. While with regard to the aforementioned purchased lands, in order not to lose a single moment to allow the Honorable Company to enjoy the desired fruits thereof, it was furthermore resolved upon the proposal of the Governor to lease the same for one year, calculated from the first of this month to the last of August 1774, in the following manner, namely: The province of Kiewaloer to Ramalinga Poele, for a sum of 40,000 pagodas in cash, excluding the necessary expenses for the servants to be stationed there on behalf of the Honorable Company, under the suretyship of Chidambaar Poele and Moetaija Poele Sarwanaijker. The lands situated in the Mahanam of Tripondi, together with the tolls at Topotorre, for 9,000 pardauws, alongside the necessary expenses for the servants, to the native Waijtenada Chittij, under the caution of Sieroemenij Chittij and Cannapaddij moetoe Chittij. The tolls and dues of the coastal place Naoer, together with the crops of a village adjacent thereto called Cotagam, to Moetaija Poele Sarwanaijker, for a sum of 13,000 pardauws with the necessary expenses, on condition of providing as sureties Patawie Rama Naijker and Appoe Chittij, in which regard His Honour furthermore testified that this was the highest that could be stipulated for it this year, it being the first and a novelty, partly because most merchants and prominent inhabitants had departed both on account of the war and the continuous extortions of the native rulers through the imposition of taxes, and on the other hand because, with regard to the province of Kiewaloer, which must contribute the major part of the revenues, the time of the early harvest has already passed, and that of the main harvest is at hand in this month and has also partly expired, so that there was not much time for the farmer to prepare himself for it, but everything had to take place with the utmost haste; yet His Honour assumed that in the future, when those lands under the administration of the Honorable Company enjoyed peace and no extortions were committed therein, this would increase greatly, and through the return of the merchant and husbandman, both the dues and the revenues from the crops would increase very much, especially once one had advanced so far as to have more than a superficial knowledge of its advantages, concerning which His Honour said he would inform himself accurately; which being likewise understood by the Council, it was furthermore resolved to have the necessary contracts for that lease prepared and to have them signed by the farmers and their sureties, and this having been done, to present copies thereof to Their High Excellencies, and furthermore to note here that the Governor has stipulated with the farmer of Kiewaloer that he shall be obliged to deliver so much Nelij as the Honorable Company requires for this Government and that of Ceylon (namely, if demand should be made from there) at 3½ measures per fanum in reduction of the lease monies to be paid. And further another havildar named Madawaraijen, and eight under-adigars, or one in each mahanam, alongside the other necessary servants for the management of those lands. After the meeting had been opened by the invocation of the Lord's Holy Name, the Lord Governor said that he had convened this gathering expressly to inform the members that the capital city of the Principality of Tansjoer had fallen by surprise on the 17th of this month at noon to the Subah of the Carnatic, Mahometh Michan, and indeed, according to reports, through treason said to have been committed by the Regent Manogie Rauw Jagataf and his two sons Soebarauw Jagalaf and Wikagie rauw; and to deliberate with the same on measures to maintain, in these critical circumstances of the times, the right of the Honorable Company to the lands recently acquired by it in ownership through lawful purchase, mentioned in the separate resolution of the 6th current; since it was greatly to be feared that the Subah, incited by the English—who after all always sought to undermine the Honorable Company in its peaceful seat and trade on this Coast as well as everywhere it was at all possible for them—would not leave Their Honors in peaceful possession of the same, but would harass them concerning this in every possible manner, all the more because His Honor had already received report that the Province of Sieroenellaar, mentioned in the secret resolution of 7 December 1772, which the Danes had held in pledge for a sum of 50000 pagodas, alongside several villages that they held in lease, had already been taken into possession by his troops, notwithstanding the representations made against this by the aforesaid Ministry that they held that province under lawful mortgage, since one had to assume he would spare the Dutch Company just as little as the Danes, and it could therefore also very easily happen

it might happen that he would not respect either the purchase made by their Honors or the pawning to the Danes; for, although it was at the same time pretended that, in response to their aforesaid representations, it was served that if their mortgage contained the truth, he, the subah, would respect it, yet that this did not take away from the fact that he, as conqueror of the realm, was entitled to take possession of the lands belonging to it, and in this it seemed to be implied that he did not intend to act unreasonably, such could nevertheless not be believed with any peace of mind. This was because all the reports received concerning this matter up to now were very confused and doubtful, and it also did not agree at all with his imperious nature, which did not permit him to let go of the least thing to which he merely imagined having any claim, maintaining that the same fought against his Highness and insulted him. Rather, it was much more likely to be thought that if this more or less flattering answer had indeed been given in such a manner, it would only have happened to lull them, as well as the Honorable Company, as they say, to sleep, and thereby prevent preparations for resistance, rather than to comply with it. For which His Honor continued to fear even more with respect to the Honorable Company, by virtue of the subah's inclination toward the coastal village of Naoer, on account of the prominent Moorish temple located there, in which it was said that he absolutely desired to be buried under his own flag, and upon which the English, as has also already been noted in several separate resolutions, strongly had their eye, who consequently would not fail, though not openly, yet secretly to urge him to take possession of the same by force. To which end, or actually at the beginning of the matter, His Honor reminded the members beforehand that on the 14th previously, with the advice of their Honors, upon the received news that a troop of the subah's sepoys was about to take possession of the province of Triwaloer, and that the aforementioned rumor had frightened the inhabitants of the adjacent village of Adiakamangalam, presently belonging under the Honorable Company in the province of Kiewaloer, who had intended to take flight, there had already been detached thither two European officers, namely Lieutenant François Baron de Mackena and Ensign Johan Willem Wehrman, with the company of Easterners obtained from Ceylon of Captain Awal Kepping, consisting of 100 men, besides 25 sepoys under a sergeant and 2 corporals; and to Cikel, in order to assist those of Adiakamangalam whenever it might be necessary, an artillery officer alongside two field pieces and the necessary ammunition, item gunners and assistants; the company of Malays of the newly appointed Captain Abdul Jabar, consisting of 60 men, also with 25 sepoys under a sergeant and 2 corporals, with a written instruction to both aforementioned military officers, under whom that entire command was placed, and who in case of necessity could have the men from Cikel advance upcountry, just as had also happened on the 18th upon the received news of the surrender of Tansjoer and the immediate possession by the subah's troops of the aforementioned province of Triwaloer, in order that, if anything should be undertaken by those people to the detriment of the Company's villages and residents in the province of Kiewaloer, and they would not desist from this upon the announcement that the same belonged to the Honorable Company, then to repel force with force, with some other or further circumstances more particularly expressed in the aforementioned instruction, which His Honor at the same time produced for reading. If, notwithstanding Your Honor's notification that the said Province of Kiewaloer and the lands belonging to the same belong to the Honorable Company, for which purpose Your Honor upon their arrival must immediately have the head resident, Adigaar, and other servants of the Honorable Company point out the boundary line between the land of the Honorable Company and the Prince, and have it distinguished from the other by landmarks or other signs, they should wish to commit any acts of violence in the same, Your Honor shall oppose force with force. And to better enable Your Honor to do so, besides the aforementioned troops accompanying Your Honor, we have also stationed at Cikel an artillery officer, along with two field pieces with the necessary ammunition of powder and balls, as well as gunners and assistants, the company of Malays of the newly appointed Captain Sabar of Patoeakan, and 25 sepoys under a sergeant and 2 corporals, whom Your Honor, upon the occurrence of any unexpected acts of violence or unreasonable deeds, and whenever you might deem such necessary, may immediately order to march to Adiakamangalam or wherever necessary, as all of them also fall directly under Your Honor's command. Furthermore, good care must be taken that no nuisance is caused to the inhabitants, nor any insolence committed by the Malays and others, much less that anything whatsoever be taken by force from the boutiques without payment or against the will of the owners, or extorted from the shopkeepers for half its value; but on the contrary, Your Honor may state to the Adigaar and other servants of the Honorable Company stationed there everything that may be required in provisions or otherwise, who will then procure everything that is obtainable at cost price, for which the Adigaar has strict orders. Subsequently, His Honor put further into deliberation whether the utmost necessity did not require that the aforementioned post at Adiakamangalam, now that Tansjoer had already surrendered and the report thereof was beyond doubt, and troops of the Subah were already present in the adjacent Province of Triwaloer, as well as the garrison stationed in the coastal village of Naoer according to the separate resolution dated 24 July last, be reinforced, since it was feared at every moment that the Subah's troops would attempt to take possession thereof, as was already rumored to have happened regarding the lands held in pledge by the Danes. This being acknowledged by the members, it was further unanimously approved and agreed to have the company of Malays of Captain Besoep, stationed here, to the number of 60 heads, and that of Captain Mondoe, sent here from Colombo, numbering 50 heads, along with 100 sepoys under their officers, march to Adiakamangalam; and to Naoer an Ensign along with 60 Europeans, the non-commissioned officers included, and 100 sepoys under their chiefs, besides 4 field pieces with the necessary ammunition and artillerymen under an officer of the same. And since, by the dispatch of the aforementioned 200 sepoys, the corps of the same here has become greatly weakened, and necessity urgently required that in these dangerous circumstances one provide oneself with men in time so as not to be at a loss in case of need, it was further, on the proposal of the Governor, unanimously resolved to enlist as many new ones in their place. should be demanded, to maintain the same in an emphatic manner, his Honour shall then provide all possible assistance thereto, as the Assembly considered that in these circumstances it was very necessary to maintain the Company's reputation in the most earnest manner, since if the same were already injured at the beginning of this new Government, it would never be restored again, but on the contrary, one would be exposed more and more to vexations; to which end it was furthermore agreed expressly to project the bark De Falck, which brought over military personnel from Ceylon to here and is now sent to Jaffanapatnam to fetch palmyras, and is moreover expected from there any day, for the conveying of those tidings, and also to dispatch it as quickly as possible, since this could not possibly be done with the ship Vreedelust via Jaggernaijkpoeram, because the same would have undertaken the voyage to Batavia long before the receipt of the papers there, as today only 5 days remain until the ultimate appointed departure day of that vessel, in which time it is impossible to have the papers transferred; and in the meantime to retain the ship Den Tempel here until the middle of the coming month of October, or indeed, if the wind and weather permitted such and circumstances required it, some days longer, in order to inform Their High Mightinesses thereby of the outcome of the matter, or properly speaking of that which the Subah might initiate concerning the Honourable Company and its seat and trade here, and most especially regarding the newly purchased lands and the redemption of the recognition fee etc., as such would certainly have been revealed by that time, since he surely will not delay long in executing the projects which he might intend in that regard, or to make known his pretensions to the Government, whether by letter or through an embassy; while furthermore it was approved to have the aforementioned Subah complimented on the conquest of that Principality, and to that end to send an express embassy from here overland to Madraspatnam, with a gift of C. l. 2000 pagodas in value, to solicit from him, as lawful conqueror, the confirmation of the prerogatives successively acquired by the Honourable Company in that Kingdom and to request His Excellency's favour for the interests of the Honourable Company, and moreover thereby to cajole him as much as possible and to bring him to a good disposition towards the Honourable Company, as well as to remove the ill thoughts which he might sometimes have conceived regarding the newly acquired lands from the Prince and other matters through instigation and agitation, and, if he raises those matters, to convince him of the contrary and of the lawful and in all respects equitable conduct of the Honourable Company in that regard, although it was nevertheless agreed to keep this lingering as long as could be done with propriety and without causing reason for displeasure, in order in the meantime to await whether he might not send communication of the conquest, and what he intends to put into effect regarding the newly acquired lands and the redeemed recognition fee etc., and what the French and Danish gentlemen, who are also seated in the Tanjore country, will do regarding this change of form of Government, so as to be able to regulate oneself accordingly, and to provide the commissioners more specially with the necessary orders relative to the matter; to which embassy and gift the Assembly resolved to proceed all the sooner, because in the last Cowle regarding the redemption of the recognition monies from the conquered Prince, it is indeed specially stipulated that the marks of honour and the making of gifts, in times and circumstances in which such had anciently been customary, by which principally the accession to the Government of a new Prince was meant, should have to remain maintained, and thus, observing everything punctually from the side of the Honourable Company, to which one is obliged according to the literal sense of the privileges, one could also reasonably expect that fairness would likewise be observed towards Their Honours, or at least give no cause for disputes on the basis of which any vexations could be committed, and in case of unreasonableness always have equity on the side of the Honourable Company, and thus constantly be able to justify its conduct. to request most earnestly and amicably that they assist this Government with more troops upon the first written request in that regard, should necessity require it, and furthermore provide all possible assistance, so that they might prepare themselves for it in time. Thus done and decreed in the Castle of Nagapatnam, on the date aforementioned. It was signed as before. Friday the first of October 1773, in the morning at eight o'clock. Council of Policy. Absent: The Titular Merchant, Adigar, and Mint Master Cornelis Pietersz, and The Junior Merchant and Provision Master Jan Appengh. In the session of the 28th of September last, based on the reasons set down in the resolution of that day, the election of persons to serve as commissioners was postponed. These persons were to form the commission to greet the Subah of the Carnatic, the Lord Mahometh Alichan, upon his conquest of Tansjoer in the name and on behalf of the Honorable Company, and at the same time to solicit and request the preservation of the prerogatives and the confirmation of the cauls, etc., successively acquired since 1658 up to the present from the Princes of Tansjoer. The Lord Governor stated that although the aforementioned Subah had not given notice of that conquest, the dispatch of commissioners nevertheless could and should no longer be delayed, because the Danish gentlemen, who had also not yet been given notice, were about to dispatch an embassy to Madras today or tomorrow. Therefore, it was also the duty of this Government, and high time, to have the Subah complimented. Thus the aforementioned Lord Governor proposed as commissioners the Senior Merchant and Chief of Palliacatta, the Honorable Philippus Jacobus Dormieux, as he understands the Malabar language and possesses great capacity for dealing with the natives; the Merchant and Chief of Sadraspatnam Willem Blaaukamer, who understands the Moorish language and also has considerable knowledge and experience of native affairs; and furthermore the Merchant, First Warehouse Master, and Trade Bookkeeper Hendrik Ambrosius Johnson, who, being also a member of this assembly and having attended to all matters that have occurred, may reasonably be expected, through his attention to this matter, to bring his mission to a good conclusion. And to assign to them, for the execution of the clerical work, the Bookkeeper Broerius Brouwer and the Assistant Johannes Abrahamsz. Bronsveld, together with, as native servants, the Sadraspatnam courier Wedanta Aijen, alongside his brother, and the Mullah or Persian scribe of Palliacatta, who was said to possess the necessary capacity; as well as leaving the selection of interpreters and other necessary servants to the discretion of the aforementioned two Chiefs, who would be notified of their appointment at once; as well as drafting a comprehensive instruction for the information of the aforementioned commissioners regarding what they will have to perform and observe, and dispatching the aforementioned Johnson with it from here at the earliest opportunity, or as soon as the gift goods being prepared are ready. had been made known, which however was found in this letter after the manner of the Moors, and therefore it can and may rightly be regarded as fictitious, or firmly established as having been extorted from the dethroned Prince, in order thereby to mislead this Government and insensibly entangle it in a correspondence or exchange of letters with the aforesaid succumbed Prince of Tansjoer concerning the redeemed recognition monies and elephants, and the lands, so as thereby to find some reason or other to charge the Honourable Company that it had not acted in good faith with the Prince in that regard, just as the arrangement and the contents of the aforesaid suspected letter indicate not obscurely, yet they do not dare to come right out with it as yet, but as it seems wanted to experience first what would be answered thereto, in order then to come forward with some pretension or pretexts for the foundation thereof: It is therefore, for the aforesaid alleged reasons as well as out of consideration that one may not enter into correspondence or exchange of letters with any imprisoned Prince without irritating the victor, since whenever something concerning the conquered land or realm might, must, or ought to be negotiated, it should occur directly by and on behalf of the victor; Approved and Agreed not to reply to the aforesaid letter, but to tell the bearer thereof verbally, and to dispatch him therewith, that since the Prince of Tansjoer was conquered, one consequently knew no more of such a Prince, and therefore also neither expected nor wished to receive any letters from him. Whereupon the Lord Governor showed that the troops who came from Ceylon, especially the officers, according to an arrangement made there, of which His Honour showed the list to the Meeting, are accustomed, when they were in the field or on detachment, and thus out of the garrison, to receive something extra beyond their ordinary wages and board money etc., in order somewhat to accommodate them in their expenses to be incurred for their subsistence, so that the addition of the same here was all the more necessary, as everything is not only equally expensive and scarce, but also nothing is to be had; just as infinitely many complaints had been made about it, It is, out of consideration of the expensive living here, Approved and Agreed to provide here also the board money and house rent in the amount enjoyed on Ceylon. To have the firewood delivered in kind to the Captains, unless they might choose to receive the same in money. meeting in this critical and thoroughly dangerous time, having prayed that the same might serve for the best of the Company and its subjects, for the preservation of land and religion, and for the averting of the sword of war with which they were threatened, the Lord Governor informed the members of the receipt, the day before yesterday in the afternoon, of two Persian letters, namely one from His Highness the Carnatic Subah, His Excellency Mahometh Alijchan, and one from his second son Machamadoe Moena Warchan commonly called Madaroel Moeloek who is at the head of his father's army in Tansjoer and is gradually moving down or descending in this direction which, namely the aforementioned letters, however great haste was made with them, on account of their voluminousness, could not be translated before late yesterday evening; and the arrival here of two ambassadors at the same time, on behalf of His said Highness and his aforementioned son, named Rahieman Alijchan or the well-known dangerous and crafty Goelam Alijchan and Padiechan, after communication thereof had been given two days prior by the latter by means of a note, by which two first-mentioned letters communication was given by Their Highnesses of the passing of the Kingdom of Tansjoer into the power of the Subah, and at the same time it was demanded that they should return the bills of sale of the lands recently bought from the vanquished prince, consisting of the province of Kiewaloer, the mahanam Tripondi, and the sea-places Naoer and Topotorre, together with the cauls of the redeemed recognition moneys and the same elephants, and render tribute to him according to former custom; likewise should also restore the jewels pledged by the succumbed prince, both to the Honorable Company and to private individuals here; and furthermore also deliver up the Tansjoer refugees who, during the siege of Tansjoer, had retired hither and secured their valuables here, with everything that might belong to them, and most particularly the two Tansjoer envoys Narsinga Rauw Bosala and Cannaga Sawea Poele, of which they allege that a contract is said to exist between the Honorable Company and the Subah, by which they certainly mean the old agreement for the surrender of fugitive persons, which indeed specially subsists with regard to Tansjoer, although they do not explicitly allege this; with the threat that otherwise, or if one were to refuse these their just and thoroughly reasonable demands, as Their Highnesses proudly call them, or were to hinder or resist them in taking possession of all the lands belonging to the Kingdom of Tansjoer, among which they also include the newly purchased places of the Honorable Company, the Subah would then no longer regard the Dutch nation as his friends, nor grant his assistance regarding their trade and further interests, but would consider them as great enemies, and in that capacity would neither tolerate nor permit in his states, which they say extend from the river Kistna as far as Cape Commorijn, that they trade there, but that on the contrary they would have to undergo very much there, and that much blood would then be shed, and more other defiant expressions, such as that if one were to resolve to experience the calamities of war, one must first consider very ripely that their army would come from the aforementioned river Kistna to Cape Commorijn and, as they wish to make known thereby, would attack the Dutch nation everywhere, mixed with various false accusations regarding the purchase of the aforementioned lands, etc., in order thereby, if possible, to intimidate this government and force them to concede those lands to him with good grace and grant all his further unreasonable desires; all of which appears more closely and clearly from the translations of the aforementioned letters, which His Honour submitted, as well as the one serving to communicate the arrival of the ambassadors, and upon reading were found to be of the following contents: Translation of a Persian letter written to the Right Honorable Sir Reijnier Van Vlissingen, Governor and Director of this Coast of Coromandel and the dependencies thereof, by His Highness Mahometh Alijchan, Subah of these Carnatic Lowlands. Seeing that the Prince of Sansjoer, who has been my tributary, has behaved very improperly, I was forced to send my Son Madaroel Moeloek, who is the light of my countenance, with my army to his realm. I have now sent orders to him to take possession of all the Lands that from of old have belonged to that Principality, without letting anything of it go lost, yes, not even as much as a blade of grass can grow upon, having already surrendered the same to my Master. It has come to my ears that Your Right Honourable has assisted the Prince of Pansjoer, who was my Enemy, with munitions of War and money, which greatly surprises me, seeing that I am such a good friend to Your Right Honourable, as is mentioned herebefore. I am his master, and Your Right Honourable has done such without my permission, and in addition has taken his lands for yourself, as well as planted the Dutch Flag upon one of the most prominent places, namely Naoer, yet what great matter of consequence is it that Your Right Honourable has done such? All this I have looked upon with favour for so long, for the sake of the Friendship that I bear towards Your Right Honourable, and on that account I also sent my servant Machamadoe Abararchan to Your Right Honourable, in order to treat amiably about some matters; therefore Your Right Honourable should have sought to increase the friendship, but you did not do so. Your Right Honourable has sent me a letter with him, dated the 19th of the month Iammadie Cessanie, which is the 11th August past, the content of which embodies fairness, likewise some gifts, which I have accepted and regarded as tokens of friendship; consider maturely that with regard to the ancient customs, I shall not neglect the least regarding anything. To the question of Machamadoe Mararchan, why the Dutch flag flew over Naoer, Your Right Honourable answered that the now conquered Prince and his Father having borrowed money from Your Right Honourable, and not having been in a position to satisfy the same in Cash, the now conquered Prince in place of that would have ceded Naoer and the other lands to Your Right Honourable; yet of this which was said to him, nothing is mentioned in the letter, which already caused me very much surprise then, but I nonetheless postponed that matter until such time as Tansjoer should be conquered by me, on which account I shall now also express myself finally on the matter. If it contains the truth that the deceased and the now conquered Prince owed money to Your Right Honourable, why then did Your Right Honourable not claim the same, or speak of those matters, or take possession of the Lands, two Years ago now, when my army was likewise before Tansjoer; did Your Right Honourable not know or think at that time that you had lent much money to the Prince, and that he was unable to pay, that he acted hostilely against me, his master, and that I would not leave him unpunished for that. Your Right Honourable indeed knows very well that through my servant I had it said in friendship that Your Right Honourable was in agreement with the Prince. For it is said that he had given lands to Your Right Honourable Sir on the grounds that the very same had promised to assist him when he opposed me; yet such is directly contrary to the law of all nations, and is all the more unjust because Your Right Honourable Sir has not fulfilled that which he promised, over and above the fact that a tributary prince is not permitted, without the consent of his liege lord, to sell anything, however trifling, of his states. By God's grace I am Lord and Ruler over the entire Subah of Carnatica, under which Tansjoer, Tritjenapalij, the Land of the Theuver and Naalcoti also belong, and therefore also stand under my dominion; and Your Right Honourable Sir has done these things without my consent by giving hope to a tributary man who had evil intentions. Can a person who is my vassal and does me evil be a friend of Your Right Honourable Sir? In his letters he writes that he relies upon Your Right Honourable Sir; and by assisting him, inciting him, and flattering him with hope, one has caused him to wage war. But consider now into what unhappy circumstances he is presently plunged through the doing of Your Right Honourable Sir. I was thereby necessitated to have my army march upon his castle; the city was taken by storm, and he, along with his brother and entire family, have fallen into my hands, and I have taken the decision to keep his entire kingdom under my dominion. Your Right Honourable Sir is said to have drawn up three diverse drafts of deeds of sale of the lands according to your own pleasure, sent them to that prince, and requested him to confirm the same with his seal; and he is said to have dispatched those papers properly sealed two weeks before the conquest of Tansjoer with Narsinga Rauw, but to have received no tidings as to whether Narsinga Rauw had delivered the same to Your Right Honourable Sir or not, the money mentioned therein not having been received by the prince either, but on the contrary an arrangement having been made to take some money from the Company from the sums named in the said deeds of sale, and to give the prince a certain part thereof, as well as to keep the remainder for the gentlemen; all of which has been learned from the prince, the dabbier, Manogie, Giliewilie and several others. And besides this, the prince has also let me know that he had written a letter to Your Right Honourable Sir to send back the deeds of sale of the aforesaid lands and recognition monies, along with the pawned jewels, with the promise that he would return the money that had been borrowed by him thereon, which Your Right Honourable Sir will already have received, and thus have understood the contents thereof. Pursuant to yesterday's resolution, Absent: The Merchant and Fiscal of this capital Marthinus Koning, and The Merchant Titular, Chief Magistrate of this outer city and Mintmaster Cornelis Pietersz., Both on account of indisposition. The members having appeared at the meeting at the appointed time, the Governor, after the meeting had been opened by invoking God's Holy Name, made known to them at the beginning of the matters to be treated, that all the jewels and precious items belonging to the now succumbed Tanjore Prince Toolaasja Raasja, which had been pledged both to the Honorable Company and to private individuals, the former for a sum of 80000 and the latter for an amount of 100000, or together 180000 pagodas, had been delivered to his ambassadors Narsinga Rauw Bosale and Cannagasawea Poele according to the receipt granted by them, long before the transition of that realm into the power of the Carnatic Subah Mahometh Alijchan, or on the 6th of July last, because the funds advanced thereon with their interest had been deducted from the amount for the purchased lands and the redeemed recognition fee, in order to get all affairs with that Prince finally settled and to have nothing outstanding with him in the dangerous circumstances in which he then found himself, as was indeed done, and for which the said receipt, containing a general discharge of everything, was granted by the said ambassadors, who were provided with proper letters of credence or credentials from him, which His Honour also produced at the same time to be inserted here as proof in due course; His Honour nevertheless having since learned that these had been left in this city by those envoys to be sold for the benefit of the Prince, or indeed for their private interest, which one could not easily trace or need not investigate, had immediately caused these valuables to be secured, having well foreseen that this could and would become an apple of discord between the Subah and the Honorable Company if it were not provided for in time, since their presence in this city, which is full of spies of the Subah without one being able to keep them out, could not remain so secret but that His Highness or his son Madaroel Moeloek would get wind of it. That His Honour therefore, in order to act lawfully and in accordance with equity in all things, and thereby to free the Honorable Company and this government from all slander, of which the Subah and his son in their letters inserted in yesterday's resolution accuse them not a little, and in which the English appear to play their role not a little, as well as to be able always to justify and display their conduct before the whole world, deemed it advisable, indeed utterly necessary, to offer the same to the Subah as actually belonging to the Tanjore Realm, in the condition as they remain under the Prince's seal, in order thereby to provide him with proof of how much the Company seeks by all possible means to gain his friendship, to which he and his son strongly appeal in the aforementioned letters, and to prevent any estrangement; which also being understood unanimously as such by the members, it was approved and resolved to present them to His Highness in the letter to be sent off, but yet not to deliver them to his ambassadors before and until he has desisted from all hostile attempts and complied with the demands made on behalf of the Company. It being deemed impracticable to include the demand of His Highness regarding the extradition of fugitive persons, as one was indeed bound thereto by virtue of the existing contracts between the Tanjore realm and the Honorable Company, which contain the surrender of fugitive persons, if one did not wish to violate the same on the side of the Honorable Company, and on the other hand because, with respect to the said requisition, such was the only thing that could be put into effect to satisfy Their Highnesses' demand, since the government had no knowledge that any persons of the least standing belonging under the Tanjore Principality were present here, and the Governor testified that the two former ambassadors of the conquered Prince, Narsinga Rauw Bosale and Cannagasawea Poele, whom the Young Nawab Madaroel Moeloek specifically demands in his first letter, had already departed from here the day after the surrender of Tanjore, without taking leave in person of His Honour, having had such a compliment made by one of their servants. pursuant to resolutions of 20 September last and 1 current, the Commissioners to be sent to Madraspatnam to His Highness will have brought everything onto a regular footing, as well as confirmed the Company's prerogatives in the Principality of Tanjore, and His Honour granted the newly purchased lands and redeemed recognition fees, in order that, in case it should come to hostilities and one were thus forced to incur war expenses, the same could be recovered therefrom; because the assembly considered that if the Subah remained entirely unmanageable and had an absolutely evil design against the Dutch Nation, it would not help whether one gave up those valuables or not, not to mention that too prompt a surrender of the same would only encourage him and his son, which latter is of an unbearable temper and made even bolder by the conquest of Tanjore, to remain steadfast on the further demands as well, as they would consider the same as a kind of anxiety, whereas if the same remain with the Honourable Company, they could in such a case serve for indemnification. Now follows the aforementioned receipt. I have duly received the letter which Your Highness has been pleased to write to me, and understood its content. friendship and affection for their trade and further interests may increase from time to time, and thus serve to the astonishment of the neighbors. It has therefore been exceedingly pleasing both to the Honorable Company and to me, who have the honor to represent them here as head of the government, to learn of the conquest of Tansjoer by their army, under the command of your Highness's son Amiroel De moera madaroel Moeloek Haphies Machamadoe moenawarchan Bahadoer, on account of the rebelliousness of its ruler soelaasja Raasja; and I have on that account already testified to my joy and satisfaction by letter of the 30th of 7ber sincerely and provisionally, and at the same time given notice to your Highness that, in order to furnish your Highness with even more convincing proofs of the true goodwill of the Honorable Company, I was to send as soon as possible an embassy of three of the most distinguished persons, to compliment your Highness in an éclatant manner and in such a way as is customary toward such high persons and sincere friends—as your Highness has hitherto always shown himself to be to the Honorable Company—on that fortunate event, and to request your Highness's further assistance for their interests, as they are already on their way. It is one of the greatest falsehoods that could ever be invented that the Dutch Company, forgetting all the received friendships of your Highness, should have assisted your Highness's aforesaid enemy with munitions of war, and thereby, as well as with the given hope of also coming to his aid with troops, plunged him into those distressed circumstances in which he now finds himself, as I have already circumstantially refuted this to your Highness in my letter of the 11th of August of last year, in answer to your Highness's grievance submitted in that regard through his ambassador Mahamadoe Abraharchan Bahadoer, and showed that envoy the contrary so clearly that in his final farewell audience he himself declared to be fully convinced of it and to have found that this accusation was false; on account of which, and to show your Highness the purity of my conscience regarding that matter even more evidently, I did not hesitate to request from your Highness's equity an éclatant satisfaction from those false informants, from which it surely shines forth most clearly that with respect to the sending of that Ambassador I have not neglected the friendship, but observed it in every respect, just as that man will in good conscience be able to testify nothing else, and that these are therefore nothing other than abominable inventions of subjects who find themselves pregnant with a dangerous jealousy over the friendship and harmony existing between your Highness and the Dutch Company, and seek to brew some designs to mutual disadvantage in order meanwhile to benefit themselves, but who, instead of their intended aim, will receive their just punishments for it sooner or later. For that reason, as well as because I hold myself assured that your Highness is convinced and knows from experience that the Dutch Company never concerns itself with appeasing anyone, whoever he may be, with promises, or giving hope for something which it does not intend to do—such as was the assistance of troops to the ruler of Tansjoer—but that its custom is to reject such directly and bluntly out of hand, I had also expected from your Highness's renowned equity that all detrimental thoughts of that nature would have ceased, and that friendship would have increased more and more, and I still flatter myself with that hope, since I am perfectly assured that nothing of the kind will be found or ever can be proven in all the Tansjoer papers. And it is likewise very mistaken that, in response to the question of your Highness's aforementioned envoy Mahamadoe Abraharchan Bahadoer as to why the Dutch flag flies over Naoer, I should have answered that the now conquered ruler and his father, having borrowed money from the Honorable Company and not having been in a position to repay the same in cash, had ceded Naoer and several other lands instead; for it is a well-known fact, which will also appear most evidently from the Tansjoer papers, that the father of the conquered ruler never borrowed money from the Honorable Company, and thus also owed nothing to them; and what, therefore, would have moved me to give such a reply contrary to the truth—which I myself could not understand might in time have disadvantageous consequences—surely nothing, but there resides far more probability that I will have answered nothing other than how the matter was in deed, namely: that the Honorable Company had taken over those places for the debts of the now conquered ruler to them, as this also contains the pure truth and cannot be denied by the said ambassador; but that no mention thereof was made in the letter to your Highness, the reason for that is that he did not ask this question of his earlier than at his final or farewell audience, after I had already closed my letter and handed it over to him; when it was too late to note such, which I nevertheless would gladly have done if it had been desired and he had not made such a considerable haste to depart; and therefore I also trust that the astonishment which has arisen over this with your Highness will cease and be removed by this elucidation, as it is most evidently established from this that such

I have duly received both letters that your Excellency was pleased to write to me and have understood their contents. And as I have already, in a previous letter, expressed my joy at the fortunate success of the arms of your Excellency in conquering the Principality of Tansjoer and congratulated your Excellency therewith, nothing remains for me with regard to that matter other than to request your Excellency's friendship and goodwill for the interests of the Dutch Company in that kingdom, seeing that your Excellency has been placed at its head. That it is a certain truth that the Company has received very much friendship and goodwill regarding its trade from His Highness the Carnatic Subah and his Illustrious Ancestors since its establishment in those lands, no one can deny. But on the other hand, it is just as certain that the Honorable Company has always responded thereto properly and has constantly strived to win it more and more, of which there are convincing proofs, and their Honors always persevere therein, as well as undertaking not the least thing that in all fairness could cause any estrangement in this regard. As it is situated, and that everything with which the Dutch Company is charged consists of false accusations from envious subjects who seek to incite estrangement between His Highness the Subah and the Honorable Company, I shall not repeat it in this letter, but refer to it, as the falsehood of what people have tried to make your Excellency believe is also amply demonstrated therein, namely that I, for my own benefit, separate from that of the Honorable Company, had taken money from the Prince of Tansjoer, and thus through a little private gain had exposed their Honors to great damage.
