reading as follows To the Lord Madarroel Moelk. From the report that the Commissioners from our Council have made upon their return, it has struck us with no small surprise that Your Excellency, after we had consented to virtually everything Your Excellency desired, and thus the matter was nearly settled, in order thereby to fully convince Your Excellency how much we strive to cultivate friendship, has seen fit to raise a new claim, namely the handover of Narsinga Rauw Bhosale and Cannagasawea Poele; a request that we are utterly unable to fulfill and comply with. Because of their departure from here very shortly after the conquest of Tansjoer, as has been shown to Your Excellency not only by letter, but also by our aforesaid Commissioners, with well-founded reasons adduced; we declare that everything that has been reported to Your Excellency concerning those two people rests on purely false reports. Therefore, it has surprised us all the more that Your Excellency desires something that is far beyond our power, which indeed cannot consist with, much less agree with, Your Excellency's prudent judgment and noble-minded way of thinking and acting, the more so as Your Excellency, upon the repeated questions of our Commissioners, declared to claim nothing other than what had been submitted in writing, on which account we also trust that Your Excellency will desist from this, and will further abide by what was negotiated with the Commissioners, just as we are still inclined to cede and hand over the lands in exchange for payment or restitution of the funds paid by the Honourable Company, in the manner we have had proposed by our aforesaid Commissioners; and if it pleases Your Highness to be satisfied with the demonstrated impossibility of extraditing the aforesaid two persons, and to settle the other points amicably, we shall in that case send our Commissioners back to Your Excellency for that purpose. I had already expected yesterday and today that my friends would have come to bring me contentment in what I have requested, and therefore, in view of the old friendship, I request to send the Commissioners tomorrow, which will be very good, as it will thereby confirm the old friendship from me to Your Right Honorable and from Your Right Honorable toward me. When they, the Commissioners, were here, they discussed all matters at length; therefore I do not importune Your Right Honorable through this letter, but it serves only so that the Commissioners will be able to come with a firm resolution regarding everything. What more shall I write. After the reading of which, on the proposal of the aforementioned Governor, it was unanimously approved and agreed that, although His Excellency in his aforementioned letters urgently desires that the Commissioners shall be sent, it is nevertheless best to suspend doing so for a while, until it shall have been discovered whether he still persists in his unreasonable claims brought forward especially at the last conference of the 27th of October last, regarding the surrender of the two former Tanjore emissaries Narsinga Rauw Bhosale and Cannagasawea Poele, and whether he might also be more tractable regarding this than he showed himself to be recently. To which end His Honor said that he would employ and send someone upon whose performance and report one could indeed rely. Furthermore, it was resolved to place the detachment stationed at Anthonijpette under Lieutenants Baron de Mackena and Wehrman also under the command of the Captain-Lieutenant and Commander of the small army camping outside this city, in order to make such use and arrangement of it as he shall deem necessary; of which resolution it was further understood to give notice to him as well as to the aforementioned officers, for their information. It is already three days ago today that, for the sake of friendship, I requested Your Right Honourable to send commissioners to me, and I am therefore very surprised that Your Honour has not complied with this, and is so indifferent regarding the friendship, allowing time to pass thus over a trivial matter. Wherefore I request Your Right Honourable to take into consideration that as long as the friendship between the Subah and the Honourable Company has subsisted, no such differences regarding the same have occurred. Out of regard for the friendship, to which I always turn my words, I have thus far treated all matters amicably, and for that same reason I now request Your Right Honourable again to send commissioners as yet with the utmost haste, when Your Right Honourable shall properly come to perceive my friendship; but if Your Right Honourable does not do so, I shall not be regarded as the cause of any rupture that has already arisen thereby in the friendship, and might further result from it. Between the Subah and the Dutch Company a great friendship subsists, and my only wish is that no estrangement arise therein, but that the same may increase more and more; and whereas a great deal of advantage for the Honourable Company is contained therein, I therefore request Your Right Honourable, quickly and without further delay, to send councillors to me, when Your Right Honourable shall thus be able to perceive my friendship. Your Right Honourable has sent servants to me, but they are not worthy to speak about the matters, nor to settle the same; please therefore send my friends, the commissioners, for then Your Right Honourable shall come to know what is going on in my heart. However, so much time has already passed now, and yet I do not know what Your Right Honourable's intentions are, nor can I undertake anything too precipitately, and without the commissioners being sent, neither can I obtain knowledge of what Your Right Honourable's intention is; wherefore I request to send the same quickly, and to cause the friendship between us to increase. My effort hitherto has been to bring everything to a conclusion amicably, in order to increase the friendship, but I find now that Your Right Honourable reflects upon nothing, and such will perhaps become further apparent to me, but that according to Your Right Honourable's pleasure. I have duly received Your Right Honourable's letter, and understood therefrom, firstly, that Your Right Honourable would not in the least undertake anything that could tend to an infraction of the friendship subsisting from olden times to the present between His Highness the Subah and the Honourable Company, and that Your Honour was completely satisfied with the matters negotiated and settled with the commissioners previously sent from the Council; furthermore, that since it involved an absolute impossibility to deliver up Cannagasawea Poele and Narsinga Rauw, Your Right Honourable therefore, if I desisted therefrom, would send the commissioners again, and everything could then, by God's blessing, be completed according to what was previously negotiated and settled. I also remain here to apply every effort, as I do in so far as it depends on me, to cause the ancient friendship between the Subah and the Honourable Company to increase, and it is also on that account that I write this; please therefore, Your Right Honourable, send commissioners to negotiate anew regarding that which has already been spoken and devised. If Your Right Honourable causes Cannagasawea Poele and Narsinga Rauw to come, I shall conduct myself regarding them to the satisfaction of the Honourable Company. Since Your Right Honourable writes to be satisfied with what was previously settled, I shall, through God's blessing, conduct myself accordingly, wherefore I then also request Your Right Honourable to be so favourable to me as to send the commissioners, in order to make both our hearts pure thereby. amounting to as much as accepting the recognition moneys and elephants, as was currently the practice regarding similar donations in the Nabobships to the North; but upon which, or after the passing of which resolution, the Member, the Second Warehouse Master Ioan Daniel Simons, submitted his objection concerning the sending of deputies, maintaining that this ought not to be proceeded with, in order not to suffer the shame and the affront of having them detained or arrested, which he was convinced his Excellency would proceed to do, being very deceitful and therefore not at all to be trusted, in order thereby to force this Government into complying with all his unreasonable demands, and therefore, through all kinds of professions of friendship, only sought to catch the Honorable Company or its servants in the net. But against this, the Governor and the other Members maintained the contrary, being completely unable to believe that he would dare to take such a treacherous step as to arrest public delegates and persons representing the entire body of a Government, as this would be an act that would not only violate all honor and good faith, but would also injure the entire Nation even more; on the basis thereof, and of several other remarks and considerations brought forward relevant to the matter, the aforementioned Governor and Members therefore persisted in their adopted resolution to send the deputies in the manner aforesaid, although the said Simons continued to persist in his sentiments, submitting however to the resolution of the Government, while declaring at the same time that he held himself free and clear from the consequences that might arise from this if the contrary should come to pass, requesting that a note be made of this as proof in due time. Report made to the Right Honorable Lord Reijnier van Vlissingen, Governor and Director of this Coast of Coromandel with the dependencies thereof, together with the Council at Nagapatnam, by the commissioned members thereof, Jacob van Tessel and Joan Daniel Simons, together with the sworn clerk and translator Cornelis Obdam, assigned to their assistance, in their embassy to His Excellency Amiroel Oemra Madarroel Moelk Haphies Machamadoe Moenewarchan Bahadoer, second son of the Subah of the Carnatic, His Highness Mahometh Alichan, and conqueror of the Principality of Tanjore, stationed with his army at Naoer. Right Honorable Lord and Gentlemen, His Excellency the Nabab Amiroel Oemra Madarroel Moelk Haphies Machamadoe Moenewarchan having, pursuant to his letter of yesterday, finally desisted from the surrender by the Honorable Company of the former envoys of the defeated Prince, by name Cannagasayea Poele and Narsinga Rauw Bhosale, on which, according to our latest report of the 27th of October, he had insisted so strongly, and finally declared that without it he would conclude no contract, and Your Right Honorables having resolved, upon his repeatedly made request for commissioners in order to continue the negotiation, to consent thereto, we accordingly departed from here this afternoon at four o'clock, and arrived at Naoer at almost five o'clock, where His Excellency was currently staying in a house standing on the beach, and in front of which, just as previously in front of Tangaatje Triwasel, a strong guard was placed, who showed us full honors; and after we had stepped inside, we were received below the stoop by the well-known Goelamalijchan and Sadiechan, as well as the Englishman mentioned in our previous reports, and led into a room, where we remained seated until His Excellency had us called to the audience, which did not delay even a quarter of an hour. His Excellency had chosen the back stoop of that house for the conference and sat there on a raised platform, like a table, in such manner and form as we described in our first report that he sat on the floor in the Triwasel, but without any weapons with him, and we were placed on chairs directly opposite him, with the Englishman and Sadiechan sitting on our left and Goelamalijchan on our right hand. After the conference was opened with reciprocal compliments, His Excellency declared beforehand that, in view of the government's declared impossibility to surrender the aforementioned former Tanjorean envoys, he desisted therefrom, though with a series of citations and arguments to maintain and assert the fairness of this demand of his, and asking among other things how one could have delivered the funds for the purchase of the lands to those people, since the Government itself had full knowledge of what a bad subject the principal of those ambassadors, namely Cannagasawea Poele, was, as the Right Honorable Lord Governor by a letter which he offered

offered to show us the original, complained to the conquered Prince about the intrigues he had committed regarding the negotiation for the purchase of the lands, and at the same time requested to send someone else with whom business could be conducted. To this His Excellency subsequently also added a series of reproaches that, on account of that point, they had broken off the negotiation for so long and delayed him for so long with writing letters and sending servants who did not deserve to deal with him, saying that we should have been sent to him with that report immediately, and that as soon as the impossibility of that matter had been demonstrated to him, he would have desisted from it right away, just as he was doing now to show signs of his goodness and friendship. This was accompanied by a host of compliments and protestations of friendship, which we answered and refuted in like manner, and regarding the point of the complaint made against Cannagasawea Poele, we said that although this had happened because he had sought many evasions in the negotiation, it nevertheless did not alter the fact that when the matter was concluded and finished, the funds had to be paid to him and Narsinga, as they were authorized by the prince to receive them. As this was not disputed by him with any seriousness, and this great difficulty was thus completely cleared out of the way, we flattered ourselves that he would immediately arrive at the manner of payment of the funds advanced by the Honorable Company for the new lands, and would regulate that point first of all, the more so because, upon our insistence to treat that first, he also already began to touch upon that chapter, saying, after a series of preliminary remarks, both regarding the disbursement of those monies by the Honorable Company and with respect to the aforementioned two envoys, essentially that, although he was willing to believe that the Honorable Company had paid all the money, he nevertheless knew very well that at least two lak pagodas thereof had not been delivered to the Prince, but had been withheld. But after we had answered all this as best as possible, by saying that regarding the disbursement of the monies the Government could not have done otherwise than what had occurred in that regard, namely to pay the same to the Prince's envoys, authorized thereto by credentials, under proper receipt, and that after the disbursement it did not further concern the Government how it had been dealt with or where the monies had landed, since it had never interfered with or inquired after the household of the Prince, and that we judged it was satisfactory enough for the Government that it could demonstrate by lawful receipt that it had paid all the monies by order of the Prince, since it was his business and not that of the Government to know which persons he qualified for the receipt and to what extent they were to be trusted, he immediately came, without further expressing himself on this point, to the article of the recognition monies and the said elephants, and asked us in that regard, since we had promised him in the last conference of the 27th of October that we would also arrange that point to his satisfaction without however entirely renouncing its redemption whether the Government had now consented to the same. Whereupon, on the basis of such reasons as are described at length regarding this affair in our previous reports, and specifically that of the 27th of October, we first tried to persuade him to maintain its redemption; but nothing being to be gained in that regard, and it being positively declared by him that he could leave nothing intact of that nature that had been done by the conquered Prince, we earnestly attempted to induce him to accept a yearly present in lieu thereof, by demonstrating how such

that this was practicable everywhere in the North and therefore entirely not in conflict with the Highness of the Souba his father; without us, to our regret, however having been able to succeed therein, for although we demonstrated to him in the clearest terms that he suffered not the least damage thereby, and he even agreed to this himself, he nevertheless remained steadfast on that point, namely that he could make no change in the customs that had existed in the time of King Pretappa, and therefore could also not grant this proposal of ours, so that we found ourselves indeed obliged to suspend this point until further disposition of the Government; for although the Memorandum given to us for our information of 27 October positively states that, if it could not be otherwise, we should simply desist therefrom, we nevertheless did not dare to proceed to that today without further authorization, seeing that by the addition to that document of today's date we are not authorized further than to the offering of an annual gift instead thereof. Having arrived after this at the point of the payment of the money, his Excellency said once again that he knew very well, and that it had also appeared from the Tanjore books and papers, that of the moneys paid by the Honorable Company two lakh pagodas had not been received by the King, citing various reasons relating thereto, and already described hereinbefore, which were then also refuted by us as well as possible, and after he seemed to be somewhat satisfied therewith, he declared that for the sake of the old friendship existing between the Honorable Company and the Souba, he would donate the 200000 pagodas from his own pocket to their Honors, and thus satisfy all of their advanced money, including therein the amount paid for the redemption of the recognition fees and the said elephants, but not on account of or on the basis of the receipt held by the Honorable Company, granted by the Tanjore envoys for the receipt thereof, which he said he could not, nor would respect, because by doing so or by considering it satisfactory, a certain writing granted by the aforementioned Cannagasawea Poele to the King, in which he gives a clear specification of what was received of the aforementioned moneys and what was not, which directly conflicts with the aforementioned receipt, would and could then also have to be considered as such, but indeed on the simple word of the Government, that so much had indeed in fact been paid for the one and the other, whereupon we then also declared in the name and on behalf of the same that the Honorable Company has actually and in fact paid all the moneys mentioned in the deeds of purchase, namely, after deduction of 30000 pagodas which are recorded in excess in the deed of purchase of the province of Kiwaloer, and 4000 ditto which are recorded in excess in that of the mahanam Tripondij, or together 34000 pagodas, which being accepted by him as sufficient, he delivered a very lengthy speech on how importantly he proved his friendship to the Honorable Company in this respect, which was at the same time accompanied by a promise that this would occur even more brilliantly in the future, which was answered by us with some expressions of gratitude and counter-demonstrations of the friendship that has been shown to him and his father the Souba by the Honorable Company. And although the promise to pay everything was now indeed made, and thus much difficulty in this regard was removed out of the way, the principal matter nevertheless still remained, namely the manner and way of payment, for instead of coming directly to that after his aforementioned promise, he first began to discourse about the deeds of purchase and the certificate to be granted therefor by the Government, regarding which, however, he finally held himself satisfied with such proof as has been mentioned at length in our Report of 24 October; after having spoken for some time about indifferent matters unworthy of reflection, and still not to

Coming to the essential matter, in order to make an end to the conference, since it was already growing late, we found ourselves compelled to request His Excellency that he should state the means by which the aforesaid moneys, which he had now had the goodness to accept for payment, were to be satisfied, whereupon, after many preceding unnecessary discourses, he finally proposed the following three propositions; namely: Firstly: That he would cause those moneys to be paid by the Country Regents of the Tanjore Principality in certain terms to be determined by installments, in such manner and according to what our respectful report of 24 October last mentioned, under the simultaneous assurance that regarding the time to be limited it would not proceed as had happened with the Prince in similar cases, but that it would be promptly satisfied, and that it was his custom also always to pay the English in such a manner, boasting at the same time in this respect greatly of his wealth in the extent of his states; or Secondly: That if the Government were inclined to it, he would have the payment made through an English counting-house at Madraspatnam that was satisfactory thereto, or through such other persons as the Government desired, and that he would deliver a bond of security from the same, or else Thirdly: That he himself would grant a bond for the entire amount, and provide the Soucar Dewe Boekenies Casidaas Ciijen as guarantor for the payment, and arrange a writing from the same concerning this. Of which we, in accordance with what was prescribed to us in the Instruction, having accepted the last, namely the suretyship of the Soucar as being at the same time the most sufficient, he desired that as soon as the Honorable Company were handed his bond and the aforementioned paper of caution, the jewels of the Prince that had been pledged with the Honorable Company should then be delivered to him; whereupon we stated that those precious items would be delivered to him after payment had been made through the same Soucar who interposed himself as guarantor, but he would hear nothing of that at all, but persisted in his desire that the same should be handed over to him immediately, as soon as the payment was fixed and security had been given to the Honorable Company therefor, which was not granted by us, however strongly he urged it, but was promised to be presented to the Government, as is respectfully done hereby, the negotiation being also broken off with that, and we were permitted to depart, after he had however first requested us to be willing to come again the next day in the afternoon, in order then to draft a formal contract, and also to treat concerning what we might have to say regarding the pearl fishery, so that we departed from there at 9.5 hours with the usual escort, and arrived here at about half past ten o'clock, having been so long underway because the coolies had taken a wrong road, on account of the fact that with the torches one could not pass a wagon with powder that stood right in the passageway. Regarding the payment of the money that the Honorable Company has advanced for various matters, he was content to satisfy it by means of the sowkars, without however declaring which sowkars, saying, upon our question in that regard, that those who found themselves in a position to take the payment upon themselves were themselves sowkars, and that this was therefore indifferent, provided the Honorable Company received sufficient security for its money, with the desire at the same time that as soon as he had granted a bond for the money, and the sowkars had bound themselves to satisfy the same within certain terms to be determined, the jewels that had been pledged would then have to be handed over to him immediately, to which we declared that those valuables would be delivered as soon as the monies to the amount of 180,000 pagodas, which had been advanced on them, were paid; and although we insisted on that for at least two hours, and showed him in the clearest terms that the Honorable Company was not unwilling to hand over those valuables to him, but that the government, as servants of the Honorable Company, only intended to cover themselves against accountability, and that His Excellency suffered not the least damage thereby, since the sowkars did not need to pay the aforementioned 180,000 pagodas without the jewels being handed over to them, he nevertheless would not desist therefrom, but made in that regard again the following three proposals, namely: 1. That if the sowkars came to bind themselves for the payment, the jewels would then have to be handed over immediately, or 2. That he would otherwise himself grant a bond, and the sowkars would bind themselves for its payment within certain times to be limited, provided that the jewels were then also handed over immediately, and his bond, after the payment, also returned, or else 3. And whereas the Ministers of the Conquered Prince have indicated that, concerning the aforesaid lands and other matters besides the said bills of sale, yet others provided with the Prince's seal, with false sums, were handed over to Cannagasawea Poele and Narsinga Rauw, the Honorable Company hereby declares that all of them, as well as other receipts, bonds, and manuscripts of the Prince or his Ministers that might be held by Their Honors, shall be and are considered null, void, and of no effect. pay the sum of 180,000 pagodas, to hand over to the said Saukaars the jewels that had been pawned, yet redeemed with the purchase money of the aforementioned bought lands, but nevertheless remained within the city and have since been secured; against which the Subah shall be required to grant the Honorable Company a receipt of their reception, and therewith indemnify the same against all present and future claims concerning this matter. Sixth: And whereas by the aforementioned contracted refund of what was paid for the recognition monies and elephants, the redemption thereof has hereby been annulled, the Honorable Company consequently obliges itself to pay annually 3 elephants, namely one tusked and two aliases, alongside 5000 pard:s in cash; to wit: The three elephants shall be brought by the people of the Honorable Company into the Province of Triwaloer, and there delivered to the people or the servants of the Subah, while the money or the aforementioned 5000 pard:s shall be paid in cash here to the one who is sent hither with the proper receipts. Eighth: It is promised and assured on behalf of the Company that to His Highness himself, or to the son of His Highness who shall govern the Principality of Tanjore or to whom the government thereof shall be assigned, all such honors shall be shown as it has been customary to observe toward the Princes of Tanjore themselves, according to ancient customs, and has been practiced only in their own person, but for no others who govern or shall have the administration there merely in their name. Ninth: It is agreed and established that henceforth all persons, of whatever nation they might be, whether deserters or debtors of either of the contracting parties, shall upon discovery, or upon demand, be immediately handed and delivered over, without the least exception being allowed to take place in that regard. Tenth: In like manner it is agreed to hand over the four elephants of the Candian Prince present here, which it is said were to be sent as a gift to the dethroned Prince of Tanjore, but remained behind here, and on which grounds His Highness, as conqueror of Tanjore, maintained that the same belong to him, provided that His Highness shall grant a proper receipt for their reception to the Honorable Company, and indemnify their Honors against all claims in that regard. Also, the servants of the Honorable Company, their merchants, and others with their palanquins or horses, shall not be hindered or molested in their journey to and fro, but upon presenting a dastak authenticated with the Company's seal, they shall be allowed to pass freely with their goods, without opening or inspecting the same, nor pretexting that orders for their passage must first come from the Soubedaars or other head regents and toll-collectors, etc. In like manner, all kinds of grains and other edible wares may be transported without any hindrance to Nagapatnam, provided the usual toll is paid for them; and at Chikel no more boutiques may be established than those that are there now. By virtue of this order, everything must be well and properly observed and executed without causing the least molestation, for the recalcitrant shall, in the contrary case, incur the punishment of the Sarkar; to that end the necessary copies hereof shall be taken, and the original delivered to the Honorable Company. Given in the year the of the month being according to our calendar the November A:o 1773. Thus, after reading these documents, it was approved and understood to reject the draft of the Nabab, especially the aforesaid three articles; and on the contrary to conform fully with the draft of the Lord Governor, and to conclude the contract thereon; and to that end, upon the further proposal of the Lord Governor, it was resolved, the contents of the same having been translated into the Persian language, to deliver them into the hands of the Saukaar, to communicate to the Nabab, in order to experience how far he would accept them, and in what and how he would consent, so that after discovering his intention and inclination in that regard, the necessary changes and improvements may be made, such as would be judged necessary and required for a speedy and final settlement of this matter; Whereupon his aforementioned Honor further informed the meeting that, whatever effort had been exerted through the said Saukaar, the Nabab could not be induced to pay more interest than ¼ per cent on the amount that he has agreed to restore to the Honorable Company through the Saukaars for the retroceded lands and abolished recognitions; as also that he moreover desired that the payment of the interest by him should appear nowhere in the papers, on the grounds that this not only tended to his disparagement, but was also a matter concerning him and the Saukaars, and thus would be settled between them; his Honor therefore had made no mention of that contracted payment of interest in the aforesaid contract, nor of the terms of the limited payment of the funds, since the Saukaars had declared that the Nabab, on the contrary, must also have no knowledge thereof, because he would then put off the promised supplies to enable them to pay the Honorable Company, or try to drag out the same to the very limit of the stipulations made, to their damage and inconvenience, to which they might very easily be subjected; but that they nevertheless would bind themselves by a separate writing, not only to the payment of the aforementioned agreed interest of ¼ per cent, but also to discharge the contracted money in such manner as is mentioned and stipulated in the resolution of the 8th of this month; with all of which the members conforming, it was unanimously resolved to establish this in such manner, since for the Honorable Company in this case it was all the same whether the same

Hereafter the Lord Governor declared that another difficulty presented itself, which likewise ought first to be cleared out of the way if one were to come to a final agreement and the signing thereof, namely, to corrupt the malevolent and self-interested Court grandees, and other ill-intentioned persons with whom the Nabab is surrounded, and who constantly incited him to harshness, among whom there are even some Tanjore Courtiers, in order thereby to make their Court with him and gain his protection, and thus to soften them in their evil intention, especially the sinister Goelamallichan, who seems to be the pivot upon which the whole work turns, as the Commissioners themselves have had to experience in many respects, since he has always known how to bring up one thing or another as soon as he had noticed that the Nabab lent his ear a little to the representations, and thus his Excellency, having turned it onto another tack, has always remained unyielding to his point in his formulated pretensions; his Honour asking the Members whether, in view of the fact that the Saukaar had formally declared that without a bribe, especially to the said Esoelamallichan, a certain Sadichan, and several others who might cause any impediments in this, the matter could not be brought to that desired end whereto one hoped to direct it, namely to preserve the Honourable Company, as much as possible, from damage, whether one could not now make use of Their High Nobilities' granted authorization by their highest secret missive of the 16th of October of the past year, that in case of the subjugation of Tanjore by the Soubah, if it be necessary, to spend a sum of 40 to 50000 guilders, in order thereby to get the Company's old acquired privileges in the Kingdom of Tanjore confirmed, and that everything remain regulated on the old footing. Thus, having deliberated thereon, and it appearing from all circumstances that without making some expenditures one will not arrive at any settlement of affairs, and one thus sees oneself brought to the utmost necessity of having to proceed thereto, it was resolved and agreed to authorize the Saukaar to treat thereon with those Courtiers in all secrecy, and to take as little as can possibly be done, and to ensure that the sum to be spent does not exceed 10 to 12000 pagodas. Hereafter the aforementioned Lord Governor also presented the receipt granted to the former Manaarcoils Subahdar and emissary of the Tanjore Court, Cannagasawea Poele, under date of the 1st of July of this year, for the monies received from the lands of Kiwaloer, both in reduction of the monies lent by the Honourable Company to the King of Tanjore on four different occasions, and the interest accrued thereon, according to which, from the share of the King in the harvest thereof, a sum of 30268. 3. 23.
