Tuesday the 1st of December, Anno 1772. Tuesday the 1st of December, Anno 1772. Found at the general inventory at Coilan, Cranganoor, Chettua, and Porca, under the last of August of the past year. Insertion of the findings, and upon this, disposition was granted and placed in the margin. Being the permitted write-off and does not agree with the regulation; these cancel 7 3/4 on Zaponelly overtaken, as well as four memoranda of shortages, namely of Coilan, Cranganoor, Chettua, and Porca, of such provisions, undersized, irreparable, and reparable goods, as were found deficient and unfit at the said subordinate places during the taking of the general inventory under the last of August of the past year, and also delivered in defect upon arrival, and regarding which the officials request disposition; thus, upon the Commander's proposition, it is approved and agreed to insert the said findings and memoranda into this resolution, and thereupon to grant such disposition as is stated in the margin for each item. Findings of such shortages, unfit and spoiled goods as were discovered here in town during the taking of the general inventory under the date of this document, and through daily use were found unfit and unserviceable, together with the marginal answers of the Administrators to show whence each item originates, in order to dispose thereof according to custom. In the Trade Warehouse 5 lb Aqua Fortis, in a bottle, entirely evaporated, of which 3/4 bottle was already known at the report of the last of August 1771. This aqua fortis was brought in in the year 1759/60. Write off. 90 lb wild cinnamon, spoiled through lying too long. Write off. In the Company's Dispensary 6 lb smoked meat, found deficient upon a receipt of 303 lb, calculating 2 per cent. 56 1/4 lb barley, similarly on 2812 lb, yielding 2 per cent. 15 3/4 lb white beans, similarly on 785 lb, 2 ditto. 15 1/4 lb white peas, similarly on 767 1/2 lb, 2 ditto. 31 3/4 lb grey peas, similarly on 1586 3/4 lb, 2 ditto. To offset the various goods in stock and for use that are unaccounted for, against what was delivered in excess of these articles by him, Dutch against Dutch, and Indian against Indian, and to charge him for the remainder by way of compensation, the Dutch at 75 percent and the Indian at 50 percent advance. To confiscate for the Honorable Company the surplus native weapon and ammunition goods, except for the cartridges and wiper blocks mentioned above. To validate for van der Grijp the permitted write-off mentioned in the report. To relieve him of the accounting for 5 stamps of 12 stuivers and to charge those to the stamp account, and likewise for the wrongly debited 25 stamps of 12 and 50 of 6 stuivers, and on the other hand to debit him in cash for the amount thereof. Likewise, to allow the writing off of the unserviceable martavan jars, the sleeping cot, the silver chain, and the clock, upon the testimony of the committee members. And finally, to allow the writing off of the shortages found according to the finding inserted here above regarding the delivered cargo of Woestduijn, as they did not exceed the write-off regulations. Furthermore, the Commander had recorded: That the ship Woestduijn arrived here from Colombo on 20 November last, and therewith was received a letter from the Ceylon ministers, in which they impart that this vessel, which must still repatriate with the second return fleet from Ceylon, is destined to collect 800,000 pounds of pepper. That the said letter was accompanied by the ministers requisition of necessities for the financial year 1772/3. Item, a duplicate packet from the Fatherland addressed to this Ministry, and brought to Ceylon by the ship Gijnwensch. And lastly, a packet addressed to the Surat ministers with a request for forwarding. That regarding the dispatch of the aforesaid vessel, the Resident of Porca has already been ordered to make everything ready for a speedy shipment, and that by this opportunity will also be sent the cowhides that are in stock at the said Residency and at the Residency of Palicoilan. That since the Ceylon ministers in their requisition make a request for 500 lb of sandalwood, and the Right Honorable Governor of Ceylon, Falck, had also indicated in a separate letter that they are in the utmost embarrassment on Ceylon for wheat, the Honorable Chief Administrator has already been authorized in advance to purchase the aforesaid quantity of sandalwood, as it is not in stock here, along with one to two hundred bags of wheat for the benefit of the said government, the more so because one cannot be certain whether the Surat ministers will be able to fully satisfy the requisition of 70 lasts that the Commander requested at the behest of the said Right Honorable Governor of Ceylon.

Wednesday the 16th of December Anno 1772. They put forward the old difficulties regarding the scarcity of rupees. Objections of the Commander regarding this matter. The Company's merchants David Rhabbij, Nanoe Chittij, and Anta Chettij, together with the aforementioned Ephraim Cohen, had been informed that the aforementioned vessel had arrived with a good cargo of sugar and other sought-after merchandise, especially a fine quantity of Japan bar copper, under the assurance that this was the only ship to be expected from Batavia this year, whereby the said merchandise would undoubtedly find a prompt and advantageous sale, and that consequently the merchants could now also pay more for the most popular articles than anno passato, since through this early arrival of goods they had the opportunity to accommodate the first arriving bombara vessels, and particularly during the scarcity. Whereupon the said merchants raised the old difficulties again, among which principally the scarcity of cash, and in particular of rupees, with the resulting impediments to trade. In addition, they brought up new difficulties, namely that a large quantity of sugar had been brought to Bombay and, according to the reports they had received, even more was expected to be brought there, so that they could therefore offer no higher price for the sugar than anno passato, especially because anno passato, in the late monsoon, many bombaras had perished during the severe weather that broke out in the month of April. How they nevertheless remained fixed upon the latest price, and finally declared that they would rather, as in earlier times, fetch the goods successively and in parts from the warehouses as often as they had the opportunity to sell them to the native merchants.
