From Palembang, 23 August 1773 From Palembang, 23 August 1773 There arrived here with a ship prahu from the Sungsang the king's juragan Inck, by whom we were honored with a copy of the letter which was sent by Your High Excellencies on the 21st of the latest past month to this monarch by His Highness's returning envoys, accompanied by some enclosures and duplicate papers, all of whose respected orders will always be attentively obeyed by us. Yesterday evening we were once again favored, via the king's juragan Taipa, with an original and copy letter from Your High Excellencies, both dated the 13th of this current month, in which among others was enclosed in yellow silk Your High Excellencies' further original letter to this Sultan; during the delivery of which papers that juragan communicated to us that of the monarch's envoys to Batavia, the eldest, namely the Kiai Demang Darpa Manggala, had passed away on the journey here, and that the youngest, being the Kiai Ngabehi Satia Dinata, was currently still lying mortally ill. This news initially dismayed this entire Court to such an extent that the king, crown prince, and most courtiers are for the present not to be seen, much less to be spoken with. Only this morning were we politely requested on behalf of the crown prince to draw up as soon as possible the promised pass to Batavia (of which we made mention in our most humble letter of the 20th of this month) for this small vessel; as it was desired to let the same drift down towards the Sungsang immediately, in order, after having taken in the Honorable Company's cadjang mats there, to proceed de facto on the voyage. From Palembang the 20 August 173— From Palembang the 23 August 1773 matter at their residence regarding the construction or actual renovation of the dilapidated lodge, but solely instead of it taking place in the same form as it has now and for a long time been understood, in which case their Highnesses, instead of making this work difficult, considered themselves bound to contribute all possible help and assistance thereto. Under these circumstances, trusting in a favorable interpretation, we have judged it most advisable to respectfully inform Your Right Honourables of this by express, and to employ for that purpose the pantjalling De Wolff under the supervision of the acting official Bastiaan Moleman, with a humble prayer to be honored at the earliest opportunity with Your highly respected orders on how we are to conduct ourselves in this matter, while favoring us with another suitable war vessel in place of this pantjalling, which first arrived here in the month of March 1769, but has since become so weakened and worn out that it is judged unrepairable at this place without heavy expense. Likewise, sailing today with the burgher vessel named De Hoop directly from here to Your Right Honourables is the Merchant and former First Resident here, Jacob van Campen, with his wife, family, and household goods, having in his hands a letter of escort, the duplicate of which accompanies this. 29 From Palembang, 23 August 1773 — From Palembang, 28 August 1773 — that the same had been purified and heaped anew, together with 1000 piculs of tin, the King and Crown Prince wishing to leave the remaining 1500 piculs of tin in the best sailer of those two small keels, and to let the Juragan Haji Ismael undertake the voyage therewith to the principal place soon, in order humbly to insist with Your High Noble Excellencies for a favorable acceptance of that mineral and permission to purchase various household necessities over there again, for the relief of those ruined by the heavy fire which occurred on the night between the 22nd and 23rd of the past month near the Crown Prince's dalem, and through which the principal court favorites living around it, namely the Kyai Rango, Kyai Demang Boenta, and Raden Agus Dia Poetra, have lost nearly everything. We have indeed politely refused the necessary pass several times to various messengers, considering that granting such an untimely pass was beyond our authority, that a request of this nature also conflicted with the contracts, and that in all likelihood, on account of the adverse monsoon, this newly appointed Juragan would reach Batavia as little as any of the previous ones. On which latter point both the King and Crown Prince had declared to us yesterday evening through a distinguished embassy that both their Highnesses stood surety that this old seaman would indeed make the voyage over there without unexpected accidents, and that our other difficulties would surely be resolved through the favor of Your High Noble Excellencies, if only we would represent to Your High Excellencies on their Highnesses' behalf the sorrowful state in which various court grandees were plunged by the aforementioned fire; the Prince and Crown Prince also offering us to transport with this vessel for the Honorable Company free of cost and damage as many kajang mats as the same could possibly hold. In hopes then of Your High Noble Excellencies' gracious correction, we have given our consent hereto in this present circumstance, with the result that within 2 to 3 days from now the passes and this small keel will be dispatched with the kajang mats to be loaded therein. The ship Blijdorp we shall, in dutiful compliance with Your High Noble Excellencies' honored command, after having discharged its present cargo, ballasted as it currently is, cause to cross over to Samarang, in order to transport a cargo of timber from there to Batavia, after it shall have first loaded at this office, upon the accompanying written requisition of the ship's officers: Circa 3000 piculs of Banka tin, 89 ditto of white pepper, and fully 800 ditto of black ditto, all of which is now only awaiting shipment. However, the unloading of this keel has proceeded without interruption since the 4th of this current month, when it appeared before this lodge, until today, wherefore we humbly request Your Noble Excellencies' pardon if the vessel should stay here somewhat longer, as we must await a convenient tide of this river, its departure from here likely being around mid-September. Our cash balance, due to the purchased cargo of the aforementioned vessel, now amounts to only circa 5600 pieces of eight and no trade linens on hand, and having only about half a year of rice in stock, we respectfully request that Your High Noble Excellencies may be pleased to take favorable reflection upon our accompanying separate demand of necessities, favoring us at the next opportunity with: 50,000 Spanish reals in cash, 480 pieces or 12 packs of common bleached Coast Guinees, 240 ditto or 6 ditto of patterned large Surat blankets, together with the 5000 pounds of rice missing from our petition of this year. We must report with sorrow that not one good canasser of sugar came out, since the same was completely melted away. The textiles, taffachelasses, cotton yarn, and cloves were largely thoroughly wet. The mumia and Surat cutch were melted together and unmerchantable. It was only with very much effort and entreaty that we persuaded the Japanese to wash and dry again the thoroughly wet goods unloaded from the wreck Burgh and soiled and stained by the sugar syrup, see Daily Register dated 13, 24, 29, 30 November and December of the past year. Finally, on the 13th of December a beginning was made, with the goods turning out reasonably well after washing. Except for the textiles, which were indeed cleaned, but retained the stains obtained, and have broken out again due to the frequent fallen rains. There have been washed 31 pieces of woolens, 26 pieces of woolen serges, 30 pieces of perpetuanas, 42 pieces of imperials, 100 pieces of Patna chintzes, 16 pieces of armozeens, and 1041 pieces of taffachelasses of various sorts. We have seized every means and opportunity to obtain more bar copper and to comply with the learned orders of Your High Noble Excellencies, but all in vain, see the Daily Register of 5 April in Jedo, 4 June, and 28 August; thus we have again had to content ourselves with the 900 chests, or the 3700 chests remaining from the previous year stipulated in the year 1760, together making 12700 pieces of chests, holding ourselves assured that Your High Noble Excellencies, according to your known equity, will not attribute the poor success of our efforts in this matter to a lack of our zeal in attending to the precious interests of the Company. Also, we notify Your High Noble Excellencies of the past sale of grains made in the past year, the debt of ƒ52905:8:— having been settled with the Japanese. 11 For the fulfillment of the goods on the demand of Japan for 1772, expressing both to Your High Nobilities our gratitude, we have succeeded in selling the shipped powdered sugar for the price of the past year, and as our petition for the following year 1774 will appear at its highest in the report which will be presented to Your High Nobilities by the Chief Armenault upon a safe voyage, we request a complete fulfillment thereof, while it is particularly pleasant for us to be able to satisfy the demand of Your High Nobilities for bar copper, camphor, provisions, and whatever else is requested, except for the demanded three pieces of woven copper frames, but only two of the same, because the other had not yet arrived from Osacca before the departure of the ships. We also thank Your High Nobilities for the approved expenses of the court journey made in the years 1771 and 1772, which was performed again this year at the usual time by the Chief Daniel Armenault, together with the head surgeon Jo. J. The sale of the 7920 lb of tortoiseshell sent thither has turned out entirely contrary to your expectation; and if one can rely on what the Japanese have said in that regard, one cannot imagine that upon any further delivery of that merchandise, higher prices will be able to be obtained for it. We are furthermore also of the opinion that when the interpreters state this or that unusual merchandise, the servants should make no requisition for it without having sufficient certainty that the Japanese will accept those goods at the prices they have promised for them; we consequently also expect that, in order to prevent the harmful consequences which in the absence of that assurance could arise from their requisitions, the servants will conduct themselves strictly according to what You have recommended to them in this respect. Although this factory externally appeared more favorable in 1769 than in the preceding year, the improvement is nevertheless of little reality, since fewer profits were obtained on the sold merchandise and the appearance of reduced expenditure entries almost solely derives from the new calculation of the specie. Not having received the reports to which the servants refer in their resolution of 2 October and their letter of 8 November 1769, we can consequently not judge the weight of the reasons which they have adduced in demonstration that they were not able, pursuant to the model sent to them, to form a return of the traded merchandise, nor to draw up the calculation of the interest; but not doubting that You have examined those reasons, we shall await Your disposition thereon. The presiding Opperhoofd having called the members of the council together, His Honour gave notice that both Chief Reporter-Interpreters, in the name of the Imperial Steward Sacquemon, had come to request the delivery of 61 pieces of various silk fabrics, consisting of twenty-six pieces of plain armozeen, fifteen ditto checkered, ten sjoucoutassen, and ten cherchanys, in payment for His Imperial Majesty, whereupon it was unanimously decided, since in Anno 1771 such a demand had also been granted to them, to deliver the same when they are requisitioned. The meeting was convened by the Acting Opperhoofd to read the Honorable Company's papers brought by the ships 's Compagnies Welvaaren and Geynwensch on the 12th and 16th of this month, and a seat having been granted to the new Member, whereupon the presiding Member informed the meeting that he had opened the papers brought by 's Compagnies Welvaaren and found everything in accordance with the Register. And after the papers were attentively read, it was resolved to obey the highly honored orders contained therein as much as possible. Also, the commission of the Assistant Surgeon Philip Leonhard was handed over to him, for which he expressed his cordial gratitude. It was also approved to have the proclamations published at the appropriate time, both on land and on board.
