From the submitted summary of the merchandise sold there in the past financial year, having observed with satisfaction that the profits gained thereon have amounted to a sum of ƒ102987.10.8, or ƒ 3182.12.8 more than the previous financial year, it was resolved—even though those increased profits are to be considered a natural consequence of the greater turnover, and also not significant in comparison with earlier years—to nevertheless praise the attention of the Chiefs regarding that principal branch of the Company's interest, and to recommend to them, in addition, not to leave untried whatever could in any way serve toward its improvement. Furthermore, upon the proposal of the Chiefs, the following were increased in salary on account of the expiration of their term of service: the Sergeant Pieter Liebner of Sprensburg, and the Corporal Basteaan Stork of Tielingen, as well as the Drummer Frans de Zouse of Pondicherij; the first to ƒ 24, the second to ƒ16, and the third to ƒ 9, all under a new contract of three years. In reply to the letters from Paleacatte of the 12th and 21st of June, 3rd, 25th, and 30th of July, 10th and 30th of August, 15th of September, and 21st of October last, it was resolved to express the displeasure of the Government that no more than 27 bales of diverse cloths were dispatched from there by the ship Vreedelust, which was attributed to nothing other than the overly great trust and complacency that the Chiefs placed in the fair-seeming yet deceitful promises of the merchants. This must undeniably have the consequence that a large part of the fulfillment of the respective requisitions will be lacking, which it was foreseen would worsen from year to year as long as the Chiefs, regarding this matter, did not proceed with greater zeal and devotion for the Company's interests, and did not spur on the merchants more firmly, as well as urge them in good time by powerful means to their duty, than has occurred until now.
