The trade in spices has long been in motion, partly for the honor of the country, and partly for its preservation: some cinnamon has been brought from Borneo, on which, after deducting all expenses, a profit of 400 percent was made. The tea, porcelain, and raw silk are all transported to Canton at great expense, so that those articles too, in such a case, could be transported to the aforementioned place with less expense, because one would not need to pay so much lease-duty then. The lease-duty and the expenses amount to much for the people who bring their wares from other places to China, where, bringing goods, they also dare to sell them to no one other than certain merchants named Hong, who then, as masters of the market, sell the goods very dearly and must pay a heavy duty to the emperor. It is also customary in China that the Europeans must always advance money beforehand to the native to obtain goods, which, having a post on Balambangan, one would not need to do, unless one wished to do so anyway, and in which there would also be no risk involved, because one would have those merchants and their possessions in our hands. The inhabitants of Manila are accustomed to lend money every year to the merchants of Amoy at high interest, which one could also do in Balambangan. The Chinese have been driven out of Manila, so that the Chinese absolutely must choose another place to settle closer and carry on trade; thus, if one had a post on Balambangan, they would without doubt come to us and also settle there and carry on trade. When I was in Sulu in the year 1761, in the month of August, the Chinese of Amoy offered to contract with me, and to deliver to me in the month of April three junks laden with tea, and further in September another 10 ditto. The Chinese are no good seamen, thus incapable of undertaking heavy voyages, as they must, whenever they go to sea, always keep the land in sight; and they must also, if they wish to go to Batavia, pass Formosa, Luzon, and Palawan, and also Balambangan; thus, if one had a post there, they would without doubt steer thither and trade. The island of Balambangan is a healthy place, is 13 English miles long, has two seaports, and resembles a triangle; the southern point lies near Looc-zee-kooambo, and the point juts out 2½ English miles long, and wide 1½ English miles. Many hills stand upon it and upon them many trees that are good for timber. The northern point is low land, and has a hill with some small woods upon it, so that the southern point is the best because the harbor thereof lies near Seempool and Secoombo, which places have many high hills, whereby the harbor is sheltered and made suitable to place a small fort upon it that the enemy will find impossible to capture. It also has good water, and is well provided with all kinds of timber; the ships can approach close there, and take in water that comes down from the hill. The middle part between the two harbors, upon which also stands a hill, is called Damper, is good and arable, and when one sows upon it, it yields 220-fold. The soil of the place is unequal; on the one side one finds white sand, and on the other side clayey soil. Large trees one does not find on the low ground, but large reservoirs of good water one finds everywhere there, even on the large hills, which water looks brown. The trees bloom in the dry season, which is caused by the heat of the ground. On the south side one finds large cliffs of marble and also pieces thereof that one can work for building, and on the seashore one also finds small stone hillocks into which one can thrust a sidearm. One also finds several kinds of trees which likewise are good for masts. Now when the Chinese from Amooijen and Soloo come to Balenbangang with their pine masts, they leave them there and take other masts made of that wood, which they sell in China for much money. One also has there another kind called Zalmaria, good for knees and crooked timbers for ships; however, on Banqueij and Sampang mangio one finds much more of it, bearing beautiful flowers, from which the gum can be used for wounds and injuries. The fruits of it yield oil, which the inhabitants of the Philippine Islands make from them. Among those trees one also finds a kind called Anneben or the Cabbage Tree, with whose leaves the natives on the Coast of Coromandel thatch the houses. And although the inhabitants of Bango say that there are no cattle there, I must nevertheless testify that I have seen dung and also tracks of the same there; and supposing there should effectively happen to be no cattle at all, nothing depends on that, because those animals can always be obtained at the nearest neighboring place called Sampangmangio, and the sheep at the place Carwaran situated on the north-west coast of Borneo. The condition of the northern harbor of Balenbangang is such that it surpasses all the harbors of that region; indeed, it is so well situated that the entire naval force of England can lie there without any difficulty, and that on muddy ground. The southern harbor, though not so large, is fit to allow the largest ship to sail in. Therefore I think that Balenbangang is the best and most favorably situated place of all the other places around that region, because on the north side lies Borneo, and on the south side Zalewan, so that the inhabitants of the other places have good opportunity to arrive there with their wares and conduct trade. Palenbangang was formerly under the power of the Kingdom of Soloo, from whom I obtained permission to establish a settlement on the first-mentioned place for the English Company. On Kenneballo is a watercourse or lake so large that one cannot see from one end to the other. In it are also shallows, which I think must be small islands. The said watercourse or lake lies 50 English miles from Malloodoo, from where one can walk to the lake, it being a fine open plain. From Taweran a river also runs to the said lake. It is said that on Borneo there are more than 100 rivers, which all border on the lake, and although not all are navigable, they nevertheless receive water from it, so that one can transport goods from one place to another. The inhabitants of those places are called Idaans, having their own king and chiefs, being titled among them orangkayas. A certain English captain named Beekman, having once been on Benjaar on an occasion, told me that while being there, he saw that the Idaans, who are called Biajoos there, brought diamonds, gold, etc. for sale there with their own vessels. At the bar or bank of the river there are many, indeed countless, coconut trees; when it rains, one therefore finds coconut nuts in abundance along the beach of the river. There one can obtain much rice. The harvest time is in the month of August. The head of the place is called orangkamer. The northern river is Langalat, having a good harbor; next to it lies an island Polongoije and several small islets; on account of the small islets the ships cannot lie well in the harbor there. Bordering that harbor are the rivers Kennerot, Pottatan, Mangatal, Innanam and Labbeton. Kennerot is a broad river, along which many people live, and is well provided with provisions. The inhabitants are Idaans. Pottatan is a narrow river, along which also many people live; it has all kinds of provisions except camphor. Both of these places belong under Orangkamela, of which the inhabitants are Muslims. Mangatal is also a narrow river and is in the same condition as the preceding. Innanam is a large river, along which also many people live, who are also Muslims, having as chief Orang-kamameth just like the aforesaid. Labbeton is a small river along which Moors live, having provisions just like the others. On Bankok one finds bamboo tubes, sweet potatoes, roots, bananas, pumpkins, soursops and many other fruits, among them also exceptionally large limes; item wax, honey, and a kind of gauze from which scented oil is made in Ambon. Tampasok, governed by a Moedien, yields much paddy, where annually many vessels from Soloo and Borneo arrive to fetch paddy. From Tassonhabil to Sampanmangio one sees nothing other than wild coconut trees and rattan trees, with which latter one can load and carry away 2 to 3 ships every year. Near Malloodoo a great abundance of pearl oysters has been found; formerly pearl fishing was also conducted there, when pearls were obtained that had not a white but a yellowish color, quite small and round. Siboocoo has a large river, but somewhat dry; inhabited by 1000 people, and yields 60 piculs of birds' nests annually, 100 piculs of wax, much fine sago and other products besides. Martu, being only a small island, yields sea cucumbers and pearl oysters, on which no other trees stand except a single species, the bark of which has a clove scent. Mangadarra, lying on the east side of Borneo and extending as far as Soloo, having a prominent corner or point which is called Unsang; the products of this country are birds' nests, resin, wax and fine gold. On the east side of Onsank lies a small island named Tambesank, having a good harbor in which many ships can lie. The north side of Onsank has many harbors with navigable water, where 30 rivers lie, from Jambesank to Tambakan, among which one is named Marop, which borders from the aforesaid watering place at Kennebello. On the east side of Onsank are many wild elephants, which keep themselves only there without going anywhere else. The products of the kingdom of Sooloo can be divided into four categories. 1. Into goods of great value that are not voluminous. 2. Into voluminous goods with which one can load ships. 3. Into goods which could hereafter be made ready to serve as a ship's cargo. 4. Into goods of mediocre or not of great value. The first is gold, pearls, tortoiseshell, camphor, gum copal, bezoar, bird's nests, beeswax, lacker, gambier, ambergris. The second: mother-of-pearl, sago, rattans, cowries, sea worms, shark fins, areca, redwood, pitch. The third: cinnamon, pepper, saltpetre, bark of a certain tree which has a clove taste, ginger, sapanwood, sugar, tar, wheat, rice, kapok, sandalwood, indigo, coffee. The fourth: wood of all kinds, among which a kind named balibagoo, from whose bark one can make ropes; item, another kind, gomuti, from whose fiber one makes anchor cables; wood oil, earth oil, coconut oil, and honey. In the year 1764 I learned on a certain occasion from a Spaniard that much pepper is to be had on Borneo, indeed so much that one could load a ship with it every year; also that in the territory of Borneo from Kemenees to Benjeng diamonds, gold, and pepper are to be had at that date. Koetto, situated on the east side of Borneo, has a large river, which extends from the aforesaid watering place Kennebello, is inhabited by 100,000 people; the products of the country are diamonds, gold, wax, earth oil, rice, and timber. Besides Borneo and Sooloo there are still other places which lie somewhat further away, falling under four nations, namely Malays, Chinese, 20 427 Bugis, and Filipinos. The Bugis are the best among the four nations who can navigate; they even go to New Holland and also to Papua, Bengkulu, Kedah, and Manila and other places that lie far off. On the east side of Borneo lies a place inhabited by the Bugis called Pasir, being their principal place. Formerly that place was of no reputation, but now, because the Bugis have settled there, that place has changed and become a good trading post, where even ships with merchandise arrive both from Batavia and from Java. The Spanish at Manila send every year 1 to 2 ships to Batavia for domestic manufactures, and in case one had a post on Balambangan, they would come to us to buy goods instead of going to Batavia. The Dutch Company directs its trade with much skill; among other things it forbids private individuals to import linens into the Company's posts, permitting only the Company, upon penalty of heavy fines, which the English Company could then also do. And to secure for the English Company a share in the spice trade, namely in cinnamon, cloves, mace, and pepper, means could also well be provided. Cinnamon grows on Sooloo; on Borneo not much, yet a little. If one knew how to deal well with the natives, there would be little difficulty in time to obtain a considerable amount. Cloves grow on Sooloo, which one could also get into our power on Balambangan by having young plants brought from other places and planted; just as in the year 1764 I once received some plants from a certain person, which after lying long withered and perished. Nutmegs are very few and also scarce to be had, yet the Bugis have promised me to do their best to plant the same on Balambangan, which are said to be obtainable on Obi, Salawati.
