299 The 13th of August Year 1774 In the City of Cochin The next day I heard that the trunks were being kept in the house of Salvadoor Camakapoelie, one of the disobedient brothers living within the limits of the Honorable Company, and all those insults having been uttered against me by a certain Cotjomingo, uncle of Poncico, and Cotjo Manuel, brother-in-law of Porchico, both of whom, according to the opinion of my chief, are the most sensible and upright of all; on a certain day in the month of July I was called before the lord chief, who asked me to what end those four soldiers and a corporal had been given to me. I replied that they had served for my safeguard. Thereupon his Honor said: well, how could the Father Governor go and complain in the city that the trunk had been taken into the fort, further ordering me to grant an attestation and to declare that that trunk had not been brought into the fort. I wrote an attestation in my own hand in the Portuguese language, and his Honor sent to ask me on the morning of the 13th of August in the city of Cochin whether that paper was ready, and I sent it to his Honor. But as soon as his Honor saw that writing, his Honor had the disobedient brothers who had removed the trunk from my house summoned together; at noon his Honor had me called, and in the presence of those people, the Secretary Weijns, and 2 sergeants, that paper was read out, and his Honor turned on me and said that I was a fraud, and that the words of my attestation were ambiguous, and that his Honor had not ordered me to give the trunk to those people, but that his Honor had advised me to live in friendship with those people, while they were furious with me, and asked further why I called those people rebellious brothers, and that his Honor would avenge me for that. I said thereupon that I had written nothing but the truth, and that I could not compose it in any other way. The day thereafter his Honor had the parties summoned, and upon their arrival, the matter having been examined, it was found that that trunk belonged to the congregation. Thus his Honor told the interpreter that, to prevent trouble between him and the congregation, he would do well to give that trunk to the congregation, as his Honor foresaw that on account of that trunk many difficulties might result, simultaneously ordering 9 soldiers to escort the interpreter and the congregation to his house, and to cause no quarrel along the way. That they went together to the interpreter's house, where the interpreter handed over the trunk to the aforementioned congregation, who had taken the same with them. The Honorable Company, as supreme lord of the Sandy Island, has always protected and shielded us and our subjects during the period of 60 years under the administration of successive Residents who have been assigned to Paponetty, with The 14th of August in the City of Cochin whom we have always lived in good understanding. In the year 1760, the ruler of that time demanded of us that we pay the tithes on our gardens and arable lands situated in the Conquest, just as the introduction thereof was also carried out, and through which the inhabitants have fallen into poverty; but considering the safe protection of the Honorable Company, everyone is content with it. But the present Resident of Paponetty taxes the inhabitants terribly in a manner by sending 7 to 8 lascars to their gardens to pluck the fruits of the coconut and jackfruit trees, as well as the leaves of the betel vines; likewise having the inhabitants locked up without reason and beaten until they pay fanams, under threats that if they will not pay money, they shall be sent to the city, so that out of fear they have paid a large sum of money. The Resident has further had our palaces ransacked and despoiled us, about which, upon writing to the Resident, he paid little heed, but continues in his old ways. And now he has had legal proceedings initiated against our subjects named Paijenatto Moelloer and Canaparambatto Jhona. We intended to present our grievances personally to Your Right Honorable Worship, but there is no opportunity for it. The inhabitants are desperate and want to abandon the land. The undersigned, having proceeded to that place, taking along two persons of the family of Paijen Cherij Naijro and also some other persons who have knowledge of the aforesaid place, and also informed the Resident of Papanettij to send along people of the Prince, also dispatching an ola on that account to Prince Cartamana to send his people. And therewith we waited four days, whereupon the Adiodij of Prince Cartamana arrived. And being asked in private whether these sown lands are new, it was answered yes, that those sown lands were made this year, and that the aforesaid Adiodij gave the dues of the Honorable Company and Paijencherij, and left those dues in the house of the Christian Nelijcherij Laloe. 389 15 October In the city of Cochim Anno 1774 The undersigned, asking of all those people whether, from the boundary stone toward the north side, Prince Cartamana has profited from the woods of Battaparatij in that land or made any new sown lands, or if it was sown thereon last year, and paid the dues of the tithe thereof to the renter or not; however, all those persons affirmed no. And the renter of Paponettij affirmed that he sowed that land in this year alone, and that he came there to demand those dues from the aforesaid boundary stone to the north side. The name of the said renter being Poelawanibel Changara Naijro. Besides this, he said that it is stated in his rental contract to demand from the boundary Caremottom the tithes of the bunches of paddy that are cut, as he has collected; and that seven young coconut trees belonging to this place were transferred to that land and obscured without the knowledge and consent of Paijencherij Naijro. Many people said that the woods of Battaparattij belong to Paijencherij Naijro, because about 72 years ago he took it in pledge from Cosieporattoe Comol Menon, which written proof rests in the hands of the family of Paijencherij Naijro.
