The sergeant with some lascars arrived on the 25th of the current month at the free place of Zeroenda and seized a certain Canarese named Elamoecarra Camottij, on which occasion three servants of the said Canarese were wounded; we have never heard before this that people come into our land to commit violence, but rather that the Honorable Company has always helped us against the actions of others. Your Highness complains in your ola of the 30th of December last, received here, that a Nayar with some Lascars had come there and seized the Canarese Clamacaire Cammottij, and, as Your Highness states, at the sanctuary of Leroendda. This Canarese has made himself guilty of a heinous crime, having had his servant beat a Christian so miserably that he was brought into the city almost dead and in all likelihood will lose his life as a result, notwithstanding all the measures that have been applied for his recovery. This Christian having been so beaten, he was brought by Your Highness's people on the 2nd of January in the City of Crochim to your court, and from there back to his house, which was moreover plundered, instead of Your Highness, wishing to follow justice and equity, punishing the injury done to this man and giving the murderous Canarese his just deserts. The mother of the Christian who was so brutally mistreated has come to us with him and has poured out her complaints with tearful eyes before us, who must administer justice on behalf of the Honourable Company to those who are under its protection, and under which the Christians living in the entire Kingdom of Cochin have belonged from the beginning. Thus, it was nothing more than our duty to have the bloodthirsty Canarese seized in order to have him receive his well-deserved punishment, since the most pitiful complaints of the man so severely mistreated had no effect on Your Highness, but on the contrary his house and property were still exposed to plunder by everyone. Thus, we have had the criminal Canarese brought into the city.
