The 25th of January, Year 1774. after notification was given of disputes at Brootchia. word proposed. for a heavy cable. which the council approves. to lodge public complaints. entered, and for the rest to accept the reported matter regarding the claim of Timmerman for now as communication, until such time as it shall have been seen what further representations will be made concerning this from the side of the English. The Lord Director gave to understand on this occasion how His Honor, after the return of the Warehouse Master Holmberg from Brooteharsa, had made every effort that could be of any service to bring Mr. Schan to peaceful sentiments, and to persuade him to allow the Junior Merchant Heijdeman to depart from there undisturbed to this place with his family and effects; but that all his efforts had hitherto been of no effect, and the repeated promises and assurances of Mr. Schan had continually come to nothing, while the Lord Governor of Bombay seemed to be holding back from answering his letter concerning this subject. He thereupon submitted to the members for consideration whether they were of the same opinion as His Honor, since all amicable avenues seemed to be closed, to instruct the Second Factor Meijer at the first opportunity to demand publicly, first orally, and if that does not help, then in writing from Mr. Schan and his council, that the said Heijdeman be permitted to depart peacefully and undisturbed from Brootchia with his family and effects, urging such reasons as are serviceable in support of this requisition. And the assembled members being of one sentiment with the Lord Commander in this regard, it was agreed to convert the said proposal into a resolution and thus to give it effect. Request of the Skipper Schoning for a heavy cable, instead of one that is unfit. The skipper of the ship Beemsters Welvaaren, lying in the roads, having requested by petition that there might be furnished to him a heavy cable instead of his mooring cable, which, according to an annexed declaration of his ship's officers, was very broken in several places and stretched, so that the vessel could no longer well be trusted to it; as also that there might be furnished for the service of the same keel the necessary provisions, both for the Moorish seafarers who are already on board, and for the lay days and the return voyage to Batavia, and according to the following request: 20 21. The 17th of March Anno 1774 The 17th of March Anno 1774: making the Horij Dordrecht. amounting to the sum of Rps 2128: 21: for the alongside mentioned reasons. In like manner having been produced and attentively reviewed, also a specification submitted by the aforementioned Administrator regarding the new covered Horij named Dordrecht, constructed pursuant to the noted resolution of the 15th of June, amounting in cash to Rps 9871: 9: and from stock to Rps 2257: 12: or making together a total of Rps 12128: 21: it was considered in regard to this account that although this sum at first appeared somewhat high at first glance, and it is also true that this Horrij, not counting the unappraised equipment goods supplied thereto, compared to the then Horrij built in the 1st month of 1757, which has since been converted into a small vessel the Mosselschulp, costs more by an amount of Ropias 1016: 47: on the other hand it is also certain that the aforementioned Dordrecht, being 53½ feet long of keel, 25 feet wide at its water discharge, and 9¾ feet deep, while the Mosselschulp on the contrary was only 18 feet wide and 9 feet deep, from which it follows that the first is built a full 3 feet wider and 7/4 feet deeper compared to the other, not only that, but in addition drew fully 2 feet less depth than the aforesaid Mosselschulp; and this, combined with the declaration of the Lord Director, as the one who had continual oversight over the construction of this new Horrij and everything related to that work, that the same is not only very sound and strong, but is also built in such a manner that it is ordinarily loaded with 276 canisters of sugar, whereas the aforementioned Mosselschulp cannot carry more than 154 canisters, which difference—especially in this river, which is becoming drier from day to day in many places—is very convenient and no less profitable, when one takes into consideration that the same newly built vessel at the lowest water can sail to and fro with 122 canisters more than the aforementioned small vessel's cargo, and the deeper-draft vessels cannot make such journeys except at spring tides or high water; so it was furthermore also taken into consideration that the same, The 17th of March Anno 1774: The 17th of March Anno 1774: also to approve. serving the functions of a small vessel, yet costs the Company considerably less by reason of the smaller crew; wherefore, and because upon accurate examination it appeared that the aforementioned expenses were by no means calculated too high, it was approved and understood to approve that expenditure with the insertion of this, to have the moneys received from the treasury, and to request authorization from their High Excellencies in the forthcoming General Letter for the write-off of these expenses, to Rps 28: 1: except for such unappraised equipment, ammunition, and merchandise as were supplied thereto and are continuously accounted for in its inventory by the equipment supervisor.
