87 shall be followed shortly by various others, yet the fact has not confirmed this to this day, while they are even as yet busy loading no more than 2 vessels with pepper and tin, and despite all daily representations in this regard, make not the slightest greater haste; nevertheless, Their Highnesses declare that, although it could not yet be determined of how many keels this year's consignment shall consist, they would nevertheless remain unalterably persistent in their previous decision to dispatch a letter and gifts to Your High Noblenesses before the end of this month, under the supervision and escort of the Khiaij Demang Samal, the sultan's shahbandar, and the Khet Ingabeij Poespatroena. The causes to which the prince and his lord son attribute this protracted shipment of pepper and tin repeatedly come down to the terror and fear that the appearance of Radje Hadjie at this latitude had instilled in the minds of the Banka inhabitants and the Palembang highlanders, those people having mostly ceased their labor and sought a safe refuge, especially the Bankanese, from which then (according to the court) it has arisen that it is now impossible to obtain from Banka not only as much tin as is required for the ordinary transport to Batavia with the king's vessels, but not even a sufficient quantity of that mineral for the loading of the Honorable Company's bark the Ida; this keel having on that account already been lying waiting for it in vain for 10 to 12 days, notwithstanding that earnest requests have been made almost daily to both the king and the crown prince. In this state of affairs, and in view of the consequences that might arise from this, I have dared no longer delay informing Your High Noblenesses thereof most respectfully, via the pantchalang the Wolff, standing under the supervision of the boatswain Bastiaan Moleman assigned here, into which keel has been loaded 61 picols of white garbled pepper costing ƒ 1398:11:— as appears from the accompanying invoice, to which I humbly refer; returning coastwards on this occasion, in hope of a favorable interpretation, 190 pieces of cotton blankets, small Sourats, recently brought here by the bark the Ida, instead of the 240 pieces of cotton blankets, large Sourats, requested in the separate demand of 20 August 1713, the first-mentioned assortment being able to fetch here locally scarcely half of the fixed selling prices; wherefore I request that on a further occasion, by Your High Noblenesses' goodness, I may be accommodated with the aforementioned required quantity of the large sort of those goods, as also that the bearer of this may be favored with a speedy return dispatch. By Transport, The Pantjalling de Wolff Batavia Bill of lading invoice of the undermentioned garbled white pepper shipped and loaded by the undersigned First Resident here into the pantjalling de Wolff, departing therewith under God's guidance and properly signed bills of lading from here directly to the capital Batavia, respectfully consigned to His High Nobility, the High Noble, Right Honorable, Strict, Far-Ruling Lord Petrus Albertus van der Parra, Governor General, together with the Right Noble Lords, Councillors of the Netherlands Indies, etc., etc., namely: In the New Office at Palembang, 24 April 1774 7442 pounds or 61 picols garbled white pepper, in the presence of two special commissioners, packed into 61 double straw pepper bags, being in each double bag one picol of 122 Dutch pounds, marked on the outside and bundled around with rattans, which was delivered as usual at 8 Spanish dollars in cash per picol of 122 pounds, thus yielding the total sum of 488 Spanish dollars, which at 54 stuivers per Spanish dollar is ƒ 1317:12:— And charges incurred thereon: To the residents here, or 3 percent on the 61 picols, favorably granted to them by Your High Nobilities in the honored missive of 31 May 1769, amounting for this transport to 14 5/8 Spanish dollars of ƒ 2:14:— each, or ƒ 39:10:— 132 straw pepper bags which were used for the above-mentioned packing and ruined during the work, costing at ƒ 13:10:— per hundred, ƒ 17:16:8 62 bundles of binding rattans used for tying and wrapping the aforesaid 61 picols at ƒ 27:—:— per hundred, ƒ 16:14:1 142 cadjang mats rendered unusable during the garbling and cleaning of that product, at ƒ 6:15:— per half hundred makes ƒ 9:11:8 Subtotal ƒ 80:19:— Total ƒ 1398:11:— Which aforesaid goods I, the undersigned, acknowledge to have received in good condition and properly stowed in the vessel under my command, and I promise, upon safe arrival, which God grant, to deliver the same again in like condition to whomever Your High Nobilities, the High Indian Government, shall be pleased to appoint for their receipt. 97 To His High Honour By the barque Posila Batavia To the High Noble, Right Honourable, Strict, Far-Commanding Lord Petrus Albertus van der Parra Governor-General, together with The Noble Lords Councilors of the Dutch Indies, etc., etc., etc. High Noble, Right Honourable, Strict, Far-Commanding Lord and Noble Lords, With the departure of the King's six last vessels on the 30th of the recently ended month, I had the honour to inform Your High Honours that for this year the supply of pepper and tin by the Palembangers ceased with it, and that thus on this occasion no more than 4699½ picols of pepper and 11307 picols of tin were to be brought by their whole consignment to the Coast. I deemed it my duty most respectfully to bring to Your High Honours' notice that this small conveyance stems mainly from nothing else than because the King steadily rids himself more and more of the care of the realm, yes, even almost openly has handed over the entire administration to his lord son the Crown Prince; which Pangerang, for that reason, lets his favourites arrange everything according to his own arbitrariness and interest, without wishing to listen to any good advice from old, well-meaning court dignitaries, because of which the factions also grow from day to day, and with the neglect of the public good, everyone only looks after his private advantage. Your High Honours' most humble servant therefore humbly requests that in the first outgoing letters the King, but especially the Crown Prince, may be addressed somewhat seriously about this; since in his humble opinion this is the only means to obtain any redress in this matter, that Pangerang indeed always overwhelming the undersigned with the strongest expressions of friendship and goodwill, yet seldom answering with actual proof. The lading of the barque De Ida confirming this latter, since it was requested more than twenty times, nevertheless sails finally towards the Coast in hope of favourable approval with: 2000 picols of Bangka tin 100 ditto of garbled white pepper, and 10000 pieces of cadjang mats, as appears from the accompanying invoice amounting to ƒ 57437:13:8, to which I humbly refer. For this reason we take the courage most humbly to request, if possible, to be accommodated through the favor of Your Right Excellencies with the workers still lacking from the designated workforce, namely: 9 house carpenters, 4 masons, and 2 blacksmiths. Likewise, may Your Right Excellencies be pleased to permit us, on account of the laziness and sloth of the local populace, to make do with Chinese as coolies for digging, pile-driving, and carrying sand, at 5 Spanish reals alongside 50 lb of rice per man per month. In that confidence, 60 men of that nation have already been actually taken into service by us on the aforesaid agreement, all of whom behave very willingly, diligently, and properly in all labor assigned to them. Meanwhile, I have the honor to communicate to Your Right Excellencies that on the evening of the 18th of this month, the Tumenggung Carta Nagara and the Kyai Demang Boenta appeared inside this lodge, making known to the undersigned, in the name of the King and Crown Prince, that at Court on this day it had been found fit not only henceforth to declare the old Sultan as Emperor, and the Crown Prince as King, but that both those Highnesses had already indeed been openly proclaimed as such and recognized by most of the Court dignitaries. R Today, the 6th of August, the year 1774, appeared before me, Barend Vorsselman, Bookkeeper in the service of the Honorable Company here, and authorized to make and execute this document by the First Resident and Head of this office, the Honorable Willem Carpenter van Westerbeek, in the presence of the undersigned witnesses, Sa Chinna, born in Boegis and for a long time subject as a bondsman to the Portuguese Christian Roemaldi Carto, residing on the outer Cingel of the city of Batavia right opposite the quarter's gate, who, upon various interrogations regarding his person, condition, and livelihood, related and declared to be true and truthful: That he is, by estimate, over 35 years of age, named, born, and residing as mentioned above; having departed, now over 10 months ago, on the orders of his aforementioned master, from Batavia for Bantam, aboard a large Chinese chiampang, having on board at that time 5 to 6 Chinese, 14 to 15 Javanese, and 11 to 12 female persons, intending together to perform wayang plays at that command; That, having arrived at sunrise back and forth near the Cannibal Island, they were suddenly surrounded and attacked by 3 to 4 large and small chiampangs and rowing prahus, all crowded with diverse sorts of native nations, who, after a brave defense of about 3 hours and after 3 to 4 of his comrades had already fallen, while he, the appearer, and various others were wounded, overpowered them and divided them as prisoners among the aforementioned vessels, bringing them immediately in that state off the Lampong river, to a whole multitude of large and small penjajaps and similar vessels, all reasonably well armed and heavily manned with many sorts of native peoples, but mostly Johorese and Buginese, all under the command of 3 panglimas unknown by name to him, the appearer, but as he heard, born and residing in Johor; Among which sea-robbers he, the appearer, and his fellow captive traveling companions having been divided, course was soon set for the island of Bliton, on whose coast he, the appearer, was shortly thereafter handed over to a certain ready-to-sail vessel, with which he was then subsequently carried over to the nearest negorij on Banca, unknown to him by name, and was sold; That he, the appearer, having subsequently spent over 8 months there in all sorts of slavish labor with much hunger and grief, was transferred 10 to 12 days ago to this place on a certain Bancanese vessel, with which he also arrived here the day before yesterday; and, after having immediately been handed over again at this place to a new master unknown to him by name, he fortunately found the means during the past night to escape to this lodge and most humbly request the Honorable Company's protection in this misfortune of his; Further testifying, concerning the fate of his other comrades, to know nothing in the least, except only having heard that one of his former companions named bappa Bantin from Bantam, about 7 months ago already, had managed to come in person to solicit the Honorable Company's protection.
