70 From Palembang, 12 March 1774. From Palembang, 12 March 1774. 2200 Picols of Bangka Tin in 4588 ingots at the customary price of 15 rixdollars per Picol, to which end this worthy freeman purchased the aforementioned mineral successively from both the king and the crown prince, and has now shipped it in this vessel. I have given my permission for the transport of this mineral all the more out of fear that the Honorable Company might fall short of an adequate supply in this regard, due to the delays of the Palembangese, who are as yet busy with the rigging and loading of no more than 3 to 4 pepper and tin vessels, wherefore I also trust that Your High Excellencies will be pleased to interpret this for the best. Concerning Radja Hadjie, I have the honor to communicate to Your High Excellencies that he and his small fleet are currently staying off the latitude of Jambi, without making anything noteworthy heard of himself, which is why the navigation between this realm and Bangka has now resumed its old course. Also, practically all the Javanese who were here for trade have already sailed homeward, as have the king's war-equipped chaloups and penjajaps from their cruise. On the 8th of this month I had the good fortune to be honored with Your High Excellencies' respected letter per the bark De Ida, dated 27 December of the past year, accompanied by some enclosures regarding the [illegible] with that The soldiers present here being currently, through the aforementioned 6 newly arrived, 2 men above the establishment, sail on this occasion, in hope of favorable interpretation, also coastward, the orders discharged from here by Your High Excellencies in the respected letter under date of 1 June 1773 vessel sent hither to 50000 Spanish reals 10000 lb rice 480 pieces ordinary bleached Coast guinees 240 small Surat cotton blankets, and Various timber, together with 6 ordinary soldiers and 6 craftsmen, as 2 of the same have died on the way hither, for which various favorable consignments I express my humble thanks, especially regarding the cash and rice, as I have thereby been delivered from a great embarrassment. As soon as this vessel shall have appeared before this lodge, all diligence will be applied to its unloading and reloading with the procured products, in order to let the same return to the Principal Place with the greatest haste, just as, should the upcoming tin transport from here happen to reach 5000 above the 20000 Picols—whereof, however, there is as yet little prospect—the order of Your High Excellencies will be dutifully obeyed. vessel Carel 72 Per the pantchiallang De Carel Leopold Butner, from Donnitz, and Pauwel Hendrik Perthon, from Hamburg Knowing for the rest this time of nothing more that merits Your High Excellencies' attention, I take the honor, while presenting the duplicate of my humble letter of 2 February last along with such further papers as the accompanying register dictates, to remain with the deepest respect. At the bottom stood: High Noble, Right Honorable, Severe, Widely Ruling Lord and Noble Lords. Lower: Your High Excellencies' most humble and obedient servant. Was signed: Willem Carpentier van Westerbeek. In the margin: Palembang, 12 March 1774. Lower stood: Agrees. Was signed: W. C. v. Westerbeek. As above. The causes to which the sovereign and his son the prince attribute this long-delayed shipment of pepper and tin constantly come down to the fright and fear that the appearance of Radja Hadjie off this coast had impressed upon the minds of the Bangka inhabitants and Palembang uplanders, those people having mostly suspended their labor and sought a safe refuge, especially the Bangkanezen; from which Although the king and the crown prince, according to my humble letter of the 2nd of this month, had declared that the three chaloups which had then sailed to Your Excellencies would shortly be followed by several others, the deed has nevertheless not confirmed this to this day, while they are as yet busy loading no more than 2 vessels with pepper and tin, and despite all daily representations on this matter, make not the slightest extra haste. Nevertheless, Their Excellencies attest that, although it could not yet be determined of how many vessels the consignment of this year will consist, they would nonetheless persistently abide by their former resolution to dispatch a letter and presents to Your High Excellencies before the end of this month, under the supervision and conduct of the Kiai Demang Jamal, shahbandar of the sultan, and the Kiai Ngabehi Poespatroena. As above. From Palembang, 24 April 1774. From Palembang, 12 March 1774. then Wolff

74 From Palembang, 24 April 1774. To Batavia. then according to what is said at Court is discharged, that it is currently impossible to obtain from Banca, not only as much tin as is required for the ordinary transport to Batavia with the King's vessels, but not even a sufficient quantity of that mineral for the loading of the Honourable Company's bark d'Ida, this small vessel having on that account already lain waiting in vain for it for 10 to 12 days; notwithstanding that almost daily earnest requests have been made to both the King and the Crown Prince. In this state of affairs, and in consideration of the consequences, I no longer dare to neglect respectfully informing Your Right Honourables thereof; per the pantchiallang de Wolff, under the supervision of the boatswain stationed here, Bastiaan Moleman, into which small vessel has been loaded: 61 piculs of garbled white pepper, costing ƒ 1398:11: as appears from the accompanying invoice, to which I humbly refer. Going back coastwise on this occasion, in hope of approval: 190 pieces of small Surat cotton blankets, brought here recently by the bark d'Ida in place of the requested 240 pieces of large Surat cotton blankets requested in the separate requisition of 20 August 1773; the first-mentioned assortment being able to fetch barely half of the established selling prices here in this place; wherefore I request that on a subsequent occasion, through Your Right Honourables' goodness, I may be accommodated with the aforementioned required quantity of the large sort of these merchandise, as well as that the bearer of this may be favored with a prompt return dispatch. Knowing nothing further worthy of attention, I humbly take the liberty to call myself with deepest respect, Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed, Severe, Far-Ruling Lord and Well-Born Gentlemen, Your Right Honourables' most humble and obedient servant, was signed Willem Carpenter van Westerbeek. In the margin: Palembang, 24 April Anno 1774. 76 From Palembang, 29 April 1774. To Batavia. Per the King's envoy, the Rhiaij Demang Soeta di Laadja. As above. I have the honour to let this serve in all respect to accompany the King's envoys, the Kiaij Demang Iamal now renamed Soetra di Laadja, and the Khei Jngabeij Poespatroena, who now come to present Your Right Honourables with His Highness's letter and gifts. And whereas this morning I clearly notified both the King and the Crown Prince for the last time that I shall in no way whatsoever transgress Your Right Honourables' repeated order to grant no passes for pepper or tin transport after the ultimate of April, Their Highnesses have promised me to finally determine this day by how many small vessels the dispatch of this year shall be concluded, in order that they might still obtain the required passes tomorrow; their number according to appearances consisting of at most 5 to 6. Meanwhile, tendering my duplicate humble letter of yesterday, I take the liberty most humbly to call myself, Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed, Severe, Far-Ruling Lord and Well-Born Gentlemen, Your Right Honourables' most humble and obedient servant, was signed Wm Carpenter van Westerbeek. In the margin: Palembang, 29 April 1774. Lower stood: Agrees, was signed W: C: van Westerbeek. From Palembang, 16 May 1774. To Batavia. Per the bark d'Ida. As above. With the departure of the King's six last vessels on the 30th of the recently ended month, I had the honour to inform Your Right Honourables that for this year the delivery of pepper and tin by the Palembangers ceased therewith, and thus this time through their entire consignment no more than 4699½ piculs of pepper and 11307 piculs of tin would be delivered. I find myself obliged respectfully to bring to Your Right Honourables' attention regarding this matter that this small transport fundamentally stems from nothing else than that the King steadily rids himself more and more of the cares of the realm, indeed has even quite openly handed over the entire administration to his lord son the Crown Prince, which Pangerang on that account lets everything be arranged through his favourites according to his own arbitrariness and self-interest, without wishing to listen to any good advice from old well-meaning court dignitaries, through which the factions also grow from day to day and, with neglect of the general welfare, everyone looks only after his private gain. Your Right Honourables' most humble servant humbly requests hereby that in the first outgoing letter the King

The loading of the Bark d' Ida confirms the latter, since it was requested more than twenty times; sailing nonetheless in auspicious hope, finally coastward with 2000 Picols of Bangka Tin 100 pieces of Kajang mats, as shown by the accompanying invoice amounting to f 57437:13:8, to which I humbly refer.
