The 14th of August Anno 1775. commissioners that these violences have all ceased has been notified that the English Gentlemen, from the misplacement of a single word, which had by no means occurred intentionally, had been pleased to draw the strongest consequences, as took place regarding the former Broach factor van Citters at the time when, after the conquest of that place by the English Troops, he had dispatched a letter to their Army commanders; while Mr. Gambier concluded this oral conversation by saying: That until this moment he had been unaware of the Nabob's debt to the Honorable Dutch Company, and that if His Honor's assistance had been requested for its collection, he would immediately have effected its satisfaction and settlement. And that finally, and after he, the Director, had repeatedly caused numerous strong entreaties and protestations to be made to the city Governor with the declaration that he would sooner resolve to complain to the Council of Bombay about this violence than to consent to such an obstinate and violent demand, indeed even, if this conduct unexpectedly should not be redressed there, take a resolution to send the Company's expected ships back unladen rather than also expose them in such a manner to an unlimited arbitrariness that seemed no longer restrainable by any representations, the occupation of the houses of the Company's Brokers, detailed in the aforesaid Resolution of the 19th of July, was removed the day thereafter, and subsequently on the 21st ditto all further violences ceased, although the houses of the Brokers of the Portuguese and French Nations at that time still remained occupied, of which notice was given to the Council by the following advisory note: Since the city Governor on the 20th of this month has removed from the Houses of the Company's Brokers the chobdars who were stationed there in order to prevent those servants from leaving their Houses; and on the 21st thereafter caused all violence to cease, as well as yesterday having notice thereof given to the undersigned by one of his servants, all Council members are requested to give their Advice whether they are of the opinion, along with the undersigned Director, to let the accompanying note be sent to the English Chief for communication of the aforesaid and request not to take any steps in this matter now, and in case of Aye to sign the aforesaid note; was signed: 28 229 The 14th of August Anno 1775 The 14th of August 1775 as well as another letter to the British, approved by note, demanded an increase of 20 per Cent, for the foreign after much trouble and negotiations concerning the contract for 1775. The 14th of August Anno 1775 The 14th of August Anno 1775 Linens which were manufactured at Brootchia, Bredera, and the villages situated thereabouts, and of 15 percent on the Surat assortments, while they had declared that they could not lower anything from this demand, indeed that they had only gone this far in order not to bring the Company into embarrassment, as they as well as their ancestors, entire household, and their whole family had derived their livelihood from it during a series of years; for it being a well-known truth that all lands both here and hereabouts have been devastated by the war, trade obstructed, indeed burdened with many imposts, and the workman chased away, which notoriously must entail a general dearness and increase of prices, and which in general also takes place in such a manner that, even if the aforesaid increase were granted to them, they would rather renounce the entire delivery than accept the same, being able to look forward to nothing but damage and disadvantageous consequences, unless the rumors of an approaching accommodation of the disputes between the English gentlemen and the Marhattas, and thereby the cessation of acts of violence, were actually confirmed. That he, the Director, notwithstanding the greatest conviction of the suppliers' representations and grievances, nevertheless considered this claimed price increase too exorbitant to immediately make the proposal regarding it to the Council, but would rather have waited some time longer to see whether time, however uncertain, might bring forth some change for the better. That, having put this resolution into effect, meanwhile both the suppliers, the Honorable Company's permanent suppliers named Souraabje and Rettingjie, and the same who had wished to accept the contract on the aforesaid conditions, had passed away shortly after one another, leaving behind two sons named Beramjie Souraabjie and Armodjie Rettingjie, who, after the end of the days of mourning, also presented themselves to His Honour and offered their services to fulfill the commitment entered into by their fathers, in the hope that through these tokens of their readiness and affection for the Honorable Dutch Company and its interests, they might succeed and be confirmed in the succession of their said parents, additionally engaging themselves to let the contracting now under discussion, in which they conscientiously assured that they had to fear nothing but disadvantage, serve as a trial year of their zeal, care, and competence. And that His Honour, having weighed the matter after a mature consideration of everything serving the purpose, and having had himself informed of the true prices of the linens by trustworthy persons, both in the surroundings and within Souratta, and after having found that none of the Surat inhabitants wished to bind themselves to accept this delivery at the increase presented by the deceased suppliers and thereafter by their sons, but had proposed a much higher demand, having delayed finally and until now, now proposes all the aforesaid to the Council, with the simultaneous submission of the contract, such written contract as said Beramjie Souraabjie and Ormodjie Rettingjie had wished to enter into with His Honour regarding this delivery, and which is therefore incorporated herein: Contract concluded between the undersigned Director, for and on behalf of the Honorable Netherlands East India Company on the one part, and Beramjie Souraabjie and Ormoodje Rettingjie on the other part, regarding the purchase and provision of the linen cloths and cotton yarns that were demanded in the respective orders for the Fatherland and the Cape for this year 1775. Article I: The contracting, delivery, and acceptance of all linen cloths and cotton yarns that are demanded by the aforesaid orders for 1775, shall take place according to the previous year's samples, and according to those that were recently received from Europe, as far as the outward appearance is concerned; but as regards the length, width, and weight of the cloths, one shall regulate oneself in that respect according to the stipulation made in the orders, even if the samples should not contain the determined length, width, and weight; however, not counting 1 or 1/2 wiesa and 1 or 2 tessouw on the delivered cloths, nothing must be lacking in that respect. Article 14: For the delivery of these goods, namely for all the linen cotton cloths and yarns, the suppliers shall enjoy the previous year's prices with an increase of 10 percent on the Brootchia assortments that must be manufactured there and at Brodera, and of 15 percent on the Surat assortments.

On the other hand, the suppliers shall be obliged to bring nothing but sound goods to the bazaar, and if despite this any pieces should sometimes be found among them that are deceptively woven or otherwise extraordinarily bad, the same shall not simply be rejected, but confiscated for the benefit of the bazaar commissioners. Number 144. They shall also, together with the commissioners, compensate for all such pieces as may sometimes, according to sound testimony, be found short, damaged, or defective in well-conditioned bales upon opening in Europe or India, namely the suppliers three-fourths and the bazaar commissioners one-fourth of their cost. Number 1444. Furthermore, the suppliers shall be obliged to bring all the contracted goods to the bazaar at the latest before the 1st of December, in order to be shipped with the vessel departing on the 15th of December, both for Europe and to the Cape. Number 1. Or lastly, all that is not ready by that time and might come in later shall not only be left for the account of the suppliers, but they shall also be obliged to return immediately in cash whatever they may have already received thereon by way of advance, and thus properly settle the contracting account in due time. For the fulfillment of all this, the suppliers bind their persons and property according to law. His Honour continued further by saying that he would never have agreed to this proposal, namely to conclude the contract on the aforesaid basis, were it not, firstly, because time had now elapsed too far for any longer delay, and secondly, because His Honour flattered himself that his high Superiors, favorably regarding the condition of Surat and its environs, and also because their Excellencies will do him the justice of being persuaded that all his actions have never followed any other path than the true welfare of the Honourable Company, while it would be most unjust and unreasonable to blame them for the poor state of the times, which can be attributed to nothing other than fateful accidents, regarding which he was moved with the deepest sorrow, and that the aforementioned demanded increase, however troublesome and disagreeable in itself, would indeed be accepted this year without any adverse remarks against him. Whereupon, having deliberated with the requisite attention, it was generally deemed most advisable and best, since no favorable change is to be expected for the time being, rather to proceed to the increase of 18 percent on the Broach goods, such as the narrow bleached Baftas, Niquanias, Bherms, Corroots, and cotton yarns, and of 15 percent on the Surat goods, or the Chintzes, Berampaats, Chelas, Bajota, Naginapaats, flag cloths, and cotton baize, above the previous year's prices, than to abandon the contract entirely, and this on the foundation of the reasons presented by the Director; and also to entrust its procurement this time to the aforementioned sons of the deceased suppliers, so that subsequently, if they strictly fulfill their duty and commitment in this matter, they may nevertheless, at the discretion of the Lord Superior, be accepted as permanent suppliers in their parents' place. Furthermore, because all the Indian returns that were demanded for the year 1774 are still in stock due to the lack of opportunity for their shipment, no contracting shall be made for what was demanded for India for this year.
