Receipt of their High at court escorting of the King's letter thanksgiving for the granted pass issuance to as also for the refunded as well as the favored servants the prince requesting that this Jurragan be permitted the purchase of the locally highly needed committs, and subsequently be favored with a speedy return dispatch. The King's second envoy, the Khe Ingabeij Poespatroena, returning on the 29th of August last, we were honored with Your Right Honorables' much respected missive of the 26th of July preceding, accompanied by various enclosures, all conforming to its register, whose containing orders will always be obeyed with all possible accuracy. Your Right Honorables' honored letters to the King under the latter date, we had the honor on the 5th of this month, with the usual ceremony, to escort to court and, according to ancient custom, to hear read out in the presence of a large crowd of listeners; after the reading of which a general satisfaction was perceived on everyone's faces, because everyone, on account of the meager pepper and tin delivery of this year, did not at all expect such an affable letter. In particular, the Sultan, and above all the Crown Prince, declared that they would exercise all their authority in order to improve this markedly in the upcoming early spring with an ample shipment of those products, having already dispatched the necessary orders in all directions for that purpose. Yet concerning the roaming of the Palembangers on the borders of Lampong Toulang Bouwang in the Way Bosee district, Their Highnesses declared that these could be nothing other than runaways crossing back and forth, since all the chiefs of the surrounding negoreijen had been ordered in the strictest terms to take care against all wantonness, but that notwithstanding this they would once again order them most earnestly as soon as possible, and upon finding the contrary would punish it with death without the slightest leniency. We thank Your Right Honorables for the permission granted, in case the pepper and tin transport to Corti should again proceed as sluggishly and slowly, as well as in such a small quantity, as took place this year, to be allowed in such an event to deviate somewhat from the strict observance of the repeatedly reiterated high orders not to grant any more passes of that nature after the end of April. As also that Your Right Honorables have had the goodness to have refunded to the Honorable Company the expenses incurred of 44 Spanish reals for the natives named Akkier and Bappa Bantin, captured from the pirates between Batavia and Bantam and sent from here to Costi per the pantjalling Edam under date of 2 February of this year. Meanwhile, pursuant to Your Right Honorables' secret resolutions of the 15th of April last, the debt of this Sultan amounting to f 98789:-:- for outstanding war expenses has been written off in our recently closed books, to remain ongoing within his for the present. While also the papers for the Netherlands, written in duplicate on large format paper and containing the entire recently past book year, will be presented to Your Right Honorables per the first Company vessel departing from here. Expenses of sloops and vessels, because in this Year the pantjalling De Wolff served twice and the pantjalling Edam once as Express to Batavia; and during their presence at the capital, through repairs and supplies, they significantly burdened this entry with various expenses. Hospital expenses, because the required medicines now run so much higher in the account than in the year before. Wages ashore, because now, on account of the aforesaid larger number of servants, more subsistence and earned wages have been disbursed than at that time. Lastly, the account of Repair and Carpentry is burdened over the previous Book-year by the unavoidable repairs that the timber wharf of this Lodge has required, whereas at that time it had remained free of all charges. And the lesser Charges originate from: Ordinary Expenses, since fewer effects have now become unserviceable, and the daily household has also been curtailed considerably. Extraordinary Expenses, as this Year considerably less Gunpowder was expended for the King's salute, and especially prahu hire for postal carriage was to be paid. While the distributed Provisions to the Honorable Company's Slaves on average cost slightly less in this than in the past Year. And the Greater profits flow from disproportionately more trade goods sold and more ample wage agio; of all which we trust to have given Your Right Honorables the substantive Reasons in more detail in the representation of charges and profits accompanying this, to which we therefore humbly refer, with respectful petitions that your highness may most favorably deign to pass the aforementioned excess of Charges, we intending to contribute all that is in our power to retrench the same more and more in the future and to enlarge the profit account. infringement is still being pursued, we also most humbly refer in this regard, if possible to discover. Although the preceding years have somewhat been exceeded, the entire yield in that year still bears no comparison to the quantity of that product that the Company received from here in previous years. And one may therefore also with greater reason insist on a larger delivery. Regarding the restitution of the Bangka passes, we refer respectfully to the humble reply to the Extract of the Patriotic Dispatch of the most recent preceding year, since their return, up to the present day, without any the least. If the passes that are granted to the King's vessels for the collection of Tin were exactly returned, that would prevent the abuse that was formerly made of those passes. But since nothing has come before us regarding this in the letters of the residents from 25 December 1770 to 16 November 1771, this makes us doubt whether the restitution of those passes is indeed being carried out so broadly. The accident that befell this commander and his companions should, according to the report of the residents, be attributed solely to the incautious conduct that those officers maintained with regard to the Mandarese prisoners. But from the account attached to the separate letter from the Timorese servants dated 20 December 1771, one would have to conclude that the admission on board of some, and indeed the most, gave occasion to those prisoners and provided them the means to make themselves master of the Company's barque. However that may be, it is to be hoped that this and many other tokens of the increasing audacity of the Natives will finally awaken the Commanders and other officers of the Company's Ships and vessels to be better on their guard against such hostile attacks, at least for their own preservation. To our particular displeasure, we have learned of the illicit trade in Tin that, according to the reports of the servants in Canton, was committed by the Commander of the Company's Cruiser in the Bangka Strait with the authorities of the Danish ship Fredenborg Slot. We do not doubt that Your Honours will have conducted the most accurate investigation into that and other cases appearing in those reports, and we consequently also trust that Your Honours will not have rested with the information that the residents provided regarding the encounter with that ship, but that Your Honours will have had questioned as required the officers and ratings who survived from the barque De Vrijheid. For although the commander of that vessel, who appears to be presumed to have had a part in that sale made, has already passed away, it nevertheless remains of the utmost necessity to discover the details of that illicit trade. We must pass over the deficit of this Office in the book year 17/ amounting to the sum of ƒ4008:—:- for the reasons given for it. We cannot, however, fail to observe in this regard that if the decrease in profits was caused by the fact that fewer desirable merchant goods were on hand there in this year than in the preceding one, that loss of profit would have to be attributed to the requisition of the residents for the aforementioned year, where, as we have already remarked in our last preceding general rescripts, virtually no merchant goods were requested. To the reply to the above-mentioned Extract Patriotic Dispatch of 5 October 1772, the matter was situated in the same manner with the requisition of merchant goods for the Book Year 1772/3.
