Aler First Resident and Head of this Office To the Right Honourable Willem Carpentor van Wisterbeek Honourable Sir Pursuant to the extract from the General Resolutions of the Castle of Batavia, taken in the Council of the Indies on 18 July 1774, the undersigned, having been pleased to be appointed as express commissioners to examine and report precisely whether, in the book year 1773/1774, all the administered and sold estates of the Company's servants who died here have been properly inventoried, whether the auction books agree with the original notes of the auctions held and these with the inventories, and whether the proceeds of the estates have been correctly counted into the Company's treasury; this having been investigated by us with all possible diligence, we therefore have the honour to report to your Honour in this regard That during the aforesaid period, 9 persons died here and as such have been closed in the payroll books, of whom Jan Bartholomeus van der Grijp, from Mechelen, junior merchant and second, from whose net estate yielding 869 3/32 Spanish reals, 562 3/32 Spanish reals were paid here into the Company's treasury in liquidation of a certain compensation imposed upon him by their Right Excellencies, and the remainder, amounting to 306 3/4 Spanish reals, was transferred towards Batavia to the Right Honourable Respected Sir Iohan de Both, senior merchant and Receiver General at Batavia, by the third mate Klaas Clement, commanding the pantjalling Edam on 2 February 1774. Eight days after dispatching our recent humble letter of the 17th of this month (which accompanies this in duplicate), we were honored from off the banks of this river, out of the ship Blijswijk destined for this place, with Your High Nobilities' respected dispatch of 31 December 1774, accompanied, in accordance with its register, by diverse enclosures; whose contained orders will always be obeyed by us with all possible accuracy. We thank Your High Nobilities for the cash and building materials sent to us alongside it, all the more because the receipt of those necessities has rescued us from a great predicament. Meanwhile, expiration of time having occurred, we take the liberty to submit to Your High Excellencies the humble petitions for an increase in pay of: Frans Joseph Peeter of Breslau, cabinetmaker, anno 1770 on the Vrouwe Elisabeth, earning f 14. We thank Your Right Honourables for the office requirements sent to us on this occasion, bringing diverse goods, 3 house carpenters, 2 masons, and 1 smith, along with 6 male and 6 female slaves, all of which serves us exceptionally well; however, to our sorrow, the smith passed away on the voyage here. People at this Court are very well pleased with the favorable approval by Your Right Honourables of the elevation of the sultan to emperor, and of the crown prince to king, as well as that the same have been pleased to relinquish from the Company's stock to the aforesaid envoys against cash payment: 20 pieces of iron cannon of 1 lb balls, 46 blunderbusses, 20 flintlocks, and 20 picols of gunpowder. In addition to the permission granted both for the purchase of 2 vessels from private individuals of a length of 70 feet each, and for the transport of as much rice as the pepper and tin vessels will be able to take on this voyage and the harvest on Java will allow, everyone is currently waiting almost impatiently for the return of the said envoys, at which time Your Right Honourables' undersigned servants will have the honour to exert all zeal and attention to renew and settle amicably, according to their highest aim and prescription, the contract presently subsisting between the Prince of this realm and the Company, with the emperor and king jointly. Regarding the collection of white pepper, may Your Right Honourables be persuaded that it continues to be encouraged through none other than friendly ways and means, and particularly with full cash payment of the specified Spanish reals per picol intended for it; its deliverers are also assured that their persons will be kept secret and they will remain out of danger on that account, wherefore they also take advantage of the opportunities to come and deliver the same willingly with their own hands to this lodge. We acknowledge with deep obligation the favorable approval of the statement of accounts of this office for the book year 1773/4 above the latest preceding year, while it will always be our objective that the trade books in this regard make a better showing in the future.
