Now and then some requests reaching me, now from the Raden Ayu, then from those on Madura, make me suspect whether the aforementioned minds there are as satisfied as has been heard; the prince who promised me, upon my request, to come here on our Dutch New Year, I shall sound out somewhat obliquely. Also, the old Mas Aria went a few days ago to a settlement to take medicine there, and I would be of the opinion that if the Raden Ayu Balemboangang, widow of the late Panembahan of Madura, were transferred under one or another friendly pretext to Samarang and so further to Batavia, it would be very good for the general cause; and thus I shall have her diverted from her intended journey in such a manner that this cannot well take place before the Raden Ayu will have presented herself to the Esteemed Lord Governor of this coast.

Further, I most respectfully inform Your Honorable Worship that the native Lieutenant Smail and Cradjagan's Chief Caning Gissing came to report to me on the 20th of this month that a few days previously the emissaries of the Captain of the Chinese there, having gone out to the south of Cradjagan with three jochoms to gather birds' nests in the bay of Tjempaeloe, were unexpectedly attacked by an undecked paduwakang, heavily manned and rigged in the manner of a pirate, and had to abandon their jochoms with the Cradjagan people and native soldiers, but after an overland journey of seven days with their weapons all returned safely to Cradjagan; the aforesaid vessel was merely From Java's North East Coast the 3rd of June 1775 presumed to have come from Noessa because it had come sailing eastward toward the fugitives. The authority given to Balemboangang's Resident Schophoff to construct the proposed fortification near Pakem according to the transmitted plan, and to discharge the superfluous native officers, I approve in the expectation that both will satisfy the intention and take effect. After handling the matters stated in today's common Resolution, the Governor communicated to the assembly that, during the recently conducted Hongi inspection, as shown by the notes in the daily register cited in the aforesaid resolution and the exposition drawn up therefrom, His Honour has regulated the patrolling of the beaches and the closing of the approaches against the Ceram and other smugglers during the present clove harvest in the following manner: that at Lancque the four patrol orembaais belonging to that district shall, two by two, take turns patrolling from the southern corner of Wackasieuw to the west corner of Negorij Lima, each orembaai mounted with two half-pound swivel guns and reinforced with two soldiers, both under the supervision of a Corporal; that the orembaai of Alang shall patrol from the inner corner of this Negorij to the corner of Wackasieuw, armed as aforesaid and reinforced with a Corporal and two privates. That below and along the island of Honimoa, six orembaais shall likewise cruise in two divisions, and at each division there shall be stationed alternately, at one time the sergeant stationed there, Wonderling, with a corporal, and at another time two corporals again, together with two European soldiers on each orembaai, equipped as before. That at Haroeko four orembaais and two divisions shall cruise, with a sergeant or a corporal stationed at each division, together with two soldiers on each orembaai, all Europeans and no natives, which must be armed just like the others. After the transaction of the matters mentioned in today's common resolutions, it was communicated by the Governor to the assembly that the Honorable High Indian Government, by secret letter of 24 November 1774, has been pleased to write and order his Honor and the expected incoming Governor Van Pleuren to have felled, over and above the already extirpated clove trees in the respective datis, both under this main castle and the subordinate spice posts, a further number of fifty thousand of the very oldest fruit-bearing trees, and to effect in this regard an altogether reasonable distribution overall in the respective datis, and consequently to let that extirpation proceed pro rata to the quantity of trees to be found therein; with orders that the kepala datis or chief dati holders must be present at this felling in order to prevent the appointed extirpateurs from proceeding at their own discretion and thus erroneously felling the tana mangs or private trees. Thus, in accordance with the proposal of the Governor, it has been approved and agreed, in compliance with their said High Honors' cited orders, to have extirpated in each dati, both under this main castle and the four spice posts, a number of thirteen trees from the very oldest fruit-bearing clove trees, which, across a number of 3914 datis that according to the latest description are more or less in existence under the spice-producing districts, amounts to a sum of 50882 trees, and thus very nearly approaches the number of 50000 trees that their High Honors desire extirpated.

to have extirpated, regarding which it was also resolved, besides the Capalla datys or chief datij holders, to also permit the Regents to be present at the felling of the aforementioned 50,000 trees, in accordance with the proposal made thereto by the Governor by separate missive to their said High Noble Excellencies on the 24th of September of the past year, so that the commissioners who are to be employed to carry out this extirpation, not being able to act arbitrarily therein, do not also come to fell the Patanamangs or private trees of the Amboinese, as those must be left untouched. On this occasion, it was also discussed and the assembly was reminded by the Governor that from the successive incoming reports of the annual recording and surveying of the clove trees, it has been observed that regarding the datijs there is not the slightest equality, as some datijs have as many as three, four, five hundred and more trees, and others have only ten, twenty to twenty-five trees; which irregularity was especially noticed with regard to the datijs of this main Castle. Furthermore, that according to the opinion of the Governor it would entail a hardship to treat the latter equally with such datijs that contain such an excessive number more in the felling of the trees, but that the datijs which currently have fewer than 135 trees—to which number the datijs were reduced according to the secret Resolution of the 18th of February 174—ought, in his Honor's opinion, for the time being to be avoided and spared from this newly ordered extirpation, at least until it has been seen how large the number of trees will be that are to be eradicated in the remaining datijs which contain such an excessive number of trees. The members therefore agreed with this preliminary opinion of his said Honor, and it was accordingly resolved for the present to exempt all datijs in which fewer than 135 trees are found from the felling of any trees, but on the other hand to have so many more extirpated pro rata in the datijs which contain such an excessive number of trees. The head of Saparoua, Cruijpenning, having made known to the Governor that according to the report made to him by the Patty of Sila, some genuine nutmeg trees are still said to stand on the island of Goram; it was resolved, upon the proposition made by the said Cruijpenning, to authorize him to send the said Patty of Sila thither with one or two well-armed orembaais or other suitable vessels, to search for the aforementioned nutmeg trees and, upon discovery, to have them extirpated. Produced to the table by the Governor two letters, namely one from the Resident of Manipa, Treno, and one from the Lieutenant and Commander of the post Waij Betyj on the Boero hinterland, Gosseling, dated the 24th of May and the 14th of June last, whereby the aforementioned Treno informed His Honour that several kora-koras and mahoelis with Papuan pirates have roved off the villages of Cauwa and Lissabatta situated on the north coast of Ceram and along that coast; and furthermore, according to the letter from Gosseling, that on the 28th of May in the morning around half past eight, on the point of Wapalea, approximately one large half mile east of that post, three Papuan kora-koras came to anchor one after another, but upon the approach of a detachment immediately sent thither by him, the Commander, consisting of a Sergeant, a Corporal, and six private soldiers, they again lifted anchor and withdrew beyond their reach; so that, these pirates not being able to be pursued any further due to the rough sea, yet upon passing the aforesaid point being soundly greeted from two-pounder pieces brought by the said Commander to the edge of the mountain, they had thus found themselves forced to leave the shore.
