I have the honor to send to Your Honor the only one of your papers that Your Honor had given me, and am sad that there are no means at hand to bring your affairs to an end, which is not feasible without the Firmans. I wished from my heart that this might happen, since I fear that the Right Honorable Gentlemen at Batavia will be quite more displeased to see the ship return without cargo than to learn that Your Honor has shown them. If Your Honor can resolve upon this, I promise Your Honor that all other matters will arrange themselves to Your Honor's satisfaction. The Gentlemen, the Chief and Council, have proposed to us that the affairs of Deanaet and Boetoesa be subjected to mediation; that Your Honor leave the road over Your Honor's wharf open as before, and that Your Honor make an excuse to the Nabob concerning the affair of the Persian. In these proposals nothing appears impossible to me, and if Your Honor can agree thereto, I think that all matters will be brought to an end in the Council tomorrow. I give Your Honor this notice so that, if Your Honor could arrange your affairs so as to remain one day longer, Your Honor might possibly take the news thereof along. It is true that yesterday I had the honor to inform the Lord Governor that I would depart this evening for Mahim and from there the day after tomorrow for Surat; I could also not abandon this intention of mine, since our Company's ship, whether laden or not, must set sail for Batavia; and it would only increase the evil by delaying it any longer, and at the same time letting it depart empty. I must sincerely declare to Your Honor, Sir, that I no longer know what is desired; for more than two months all our affairs at Surat have been held up; we have complained about this to Your Honor's Council, who answered us that they cannot protect us against the Nabob without having seen our Firmans beforehand. In consequence whereof I have asked Your Honor's Council here to intervene with their authority, so that all oppressions might be suspended until it was permitted to us on behalf of our high superiors /from whom we expect an answer in coming November/ to produce the same. This is what I took the liberty to repeat in writing to the Lord Governor the day before yesterday; yesterday morning His Honor gave me hope of granting me this today. In consequence whereof I repeat my request to you, Sir, namely, that Your Honor please contribute thereto everything that is in your power, both in the Council and by especially strengthening the good disposition of the Governor, upon which I rely, and please consider what will be thought in Batavia, where so much indulgence is used towards Your Honor's Gentlemen, that we are refused a mere postponement for 5 to 6 months, a matter which makes no change in Your Honor's intentions. The proposals which the Surat Gentlemen have made to Your Honor, I believe will be the same ones that they have mentioned in a very extensive letter to our Director and Council there. A most terrible storm, the like of which is beyond the memory of any man here, having caused no fewer than 7 large ships besides a great number of smaller vessels to run aground on this roadstead on the 17th of the past month of May, and some to perish with all hands, has in addition caused two private vessels, bound for the headquarters and having already left the roadstead 3 days before the storm, to be wrecked, and is the reason that Your High Honours will remain deprived of the receipt of our general description this year, as all the papers were lost with one of these two vessels. Wherefore, having deemed myself obliged to make every possible effort in order that Your High Honours be informed of the state of this office, I am dispatching this, in the hope that it will secure a favourable delivery, overland to Nagapatnam, in order to have the honour to bring to Your High Honours' exalted notice that everything at this office is in a good state, while I am also fortunate enough to be able to inform Your High Honours that, after the Japanese copper had previously been sold at the set profit, at the general sale on the 28th of January last we disposed of the powdered sugar for 12½ rupees per 100 pounds net cash, yielding an advance of 107 per cent, of which there is no example in the west of the Indies; all the other items have also been sold, either with the set or with very acceptable profits. I cannot doubt that the foregoing will meet with Your High Honours' satisfaction, while it obliges me to solicit of Your High Honours with all urgency that our demand for merchandise sent in January may be fulfilled in quantity and quality. I find myself the more spurred to this, both because there is now great hope that the warring parties will soon reach an agreement and thereby, with all troubles ceasing, the trade goods will find a wide sale to many outlying places where everything has now been consumed, and also principally because I believe I may assume that prices, especially also of the above-mentioned sweetness, will not fall, considering that the previously related accidents and the resulting shortage of ships, added to the dearness of cotton in China and Bengal, will well prevent and deter private merchants from sending any ships thither, and we therefore possibly have no other sugar to expect from the headquarters than that of the Company.
