The 16th of June, in the year 1777. amounting to f 4271: 12: -, making 949 old pagodas 70 fanums, or in new coin at an 8 percent agio, 1025 pagodas 4 fanums 10 cash; it has been approved and agreed, pursuant to the authorization obtained from Their High Noble Lands to sell or melt down the aforementioned gold works, to cede the same to the natives Nelleberaam Tarwadie and Ponambalam for the sum offered for it of 1500 new Nagapattinam pagodas 50 fanums; as this gives the Company a profit of 129 new Nagapattinam pagodas 10 fanums, calculated at 12 3/4 percent, which is more than what one could expect from melting it down. Subsequently, the Governor has remarked. Although Mr. Brouwer was satisfied in that respect, I nevertheless retained the desire to see a fixed time determined before his departure from here upon which I could rely, in order to continue inhabiting these houses in exchange for the repairs, as I had previously agreed with him on that matter, but regarding which his Honour, while at Nagapatnam, had raised some difficulties. I accordingly made known to Mr. Brouwer my wish for such an assurance, and at the same time showed him the dilapidated part of the house, offering, in case of a certain specified stay, to have everything properly remedied. This, and a certain particular preference which I expressed to him for altering some rooms, was the actual cause of this agreement. Yet I testify in truth to your Right Honourable that I knew nothing of the clause regarding the purchase of those houses in the event of an unexpected death, until the document was ready and handed over to me for reading. However, as little as I could then imagine that that journey would turn out so unhappily for Mr. Brouwer and his beloved, I nevertheless considered the uncertainty of my own affairs, and I requested him on that account to add the exception, provided that I continued in my present service and were not rendered unable to make that purchase by any considerable misfortunes, which I then gave him verbatim on a slip of paper, and which he also had inserted in that manner by my clerk Caspersz, as I could show your Right Honourable by the duplicate I possess of this agreement, signed by Mr. Brouwer. I testify to your Right Honourable that this is no fictitious excuse, since in that respect I dare safely appeal not only to the testimony of Mr. Vrijmoet, with whom I was associated, but to almost all the friends here, as it is sufficiently known to everyone what interest Mr. Vrijmoet and I held in the missing vessel. I therefore leave it to your Right Honourable's own just way of thinking to judge to what extent I can, in this unfortunate condition, be considered bound to an engagement entered into by me with such an exception, from which I nevertheless, if this adversity did not fall so heavily upon me as it does, would not wish to derive the slightest advantage to the detriment of a distressed widow, the more so because I am convinced in my own mind that those houses are fully worth the required amount. Pursuant to the esteemed directive of their High Excellencies, the High Indian Government at Batavia, by venerated missive of the 5th of March of this year, communicated to Palliacatta by this Council by letter of the 31st of May following thereupon, ordering that the Secunde there, Hendrik Koffier, be instructed to pay directly into the Company's treasury the loss incurred in the Netherlands on the purchase cost of 4,500 pieces of Palicol chintzes collected by him as Chief of Palicol in the year 1767, amounting to a considerable sum of f 10,317:5:-; for which he has already been debited in the Palliacatta trade books; or otherwise, for lack of cash, to point out a suitable means whereby the Company could be indemnified, since no longer delay could be granted; the same has thereupon written to the Lord Governor the following most lamentable missive: Nagapatnam.
