If on mid-July any should happen to be missing from the promised number of cloths specified hereinbefore that we have not delivered, we bind ourselves together to pay in that event to the Honorable Company as a fine such sum as those undelivered pieces amount to, calculated at the price of the first assortment, unless there be any inland disturbances, notable dearth, mortality, and hindrances from the rulers, or any considerable inconveniences whereby the full delivery of the undertaken cloths could not be made, in which case we shall be free from paying the said penalty. Hereafter follows the aforesaid contract, written in the Tellinga language and signed by the merchants aforementioned; and thereunder, We the undersigned acknowledge to have entered into the above contract for the account of the Dutch Company on conditions of purchase and with the merchants previously mentioned, and concluded upon the highly esteemed approval of the Honorable, Valiant Mr. Reijnier van Vlissingen and the Honorable Council mentioned in the heading of this document. The 7th of March, Anno 1777. are sent. one prolonged. it was initially resolved to note in the outgoing letter thither, for the information of the chiefs, that the 10,000 old Nagapatnam pagodas, which were still lacking to the complete fulfillment of their monetary demand of the past year, have already been dispatched to Iaggernaikpoelam with the sloop 't Loo upon the opening of navigation; Having viewed with pleasure, from the chiefs' letter of the 16th of October 1776, that the increased debts of the merchants since the year 1774, which at the closing of the books on the ultimate of August 1775 amounted to ƒ 27,520:12:8, but which since then have been reduced by the aforesaid merchants to ƒ 9,160:2:8, according to the resolution of this table of the 28th of December 1775, both by the present chief Johannes Accama and from the estate of the deceased second Jan Onstee, approved date of write-off Jan Onstee, have been paid for the largest part into the Company's treasury, and for the remainder a bond had been executed on behalf of the Company by the testamentary executors of the estate of the said second Onstee: it is resolved to fully approve the handling of the servants in this matter, provided they take proper care that as soon as enough funds have come in from the estate of Onstee, the aforesaid bond shall be paid into the treasury; After examination of the gift and carpentry accounts of the last 6 months of the passed financial year 1776/7, and no errors or excesses having been detected therein, it is approved and resolved to pass the same for write-off, alongside the expense accounts of the months of August, September, October, November, and December of the previous year, upon which likewise nothing fell to be remarked. Subsequently, with respect to the collection itself, it was agreed to convey to the servants the wish of this Government that it may succeed again as favorably as in anno passato; noting at the same time that it is trusted they will apply their utmost endeavors to this end, with assurance from this side that efforts will be made, by the timely provision of three-image pagodas, to enable the servants to maintain the collection throughout the entire trading season without the slightest slackening. Meanwhile, with regard to the General Cloth Contract, it was agreed to note in the outgoing letter thither that the servants have erroneously entered the year 1776 for 1774 in the entries for Extra Fine and Supra Fine Guinees, since under the contracts of the last-mentioned The 7th of March Anno 1777 and not under those of the first-mentioned trading year, the aforesaid Guinees were contracted for Po: 13.- and 16.- respectively, with orders to them to correct the aforesaid error in the original Contract. Upon the repeated instance of the servants to be permitted to transport the linens by sea to Iaggernaikpm, it was agreed to reply that, however advantageous for the Company this request may seem to be, one cannot yet grant them authorization for it, as this Government has submitted the matter to Their High Nobilities in the letter recently dispatched to Batavia, whose pleasure on this matter must first be awaited, with the further instruction that as soon as an answer has been obtained in this regard, they will be provided with further orders both concerning this matter and with respect to the collapsed warehouse at Naasapoer. The Chief Johannes Accama, in his capacity as Executor of the estate and inheritance of the late Secunde Ian Onstee, having requested that the proceeds of the Palicol rejects belonging to the recently ended collection might be applied to the benefit of the aforementioned estate, in so far as the merchants to whom those rejects belonged were still indebted to the aforesaid estate; and whereas those rejects belong to the collection for Anno 1775, on which the merchants have remained so markedly in arrears, and thus the aforesaid request is entirely consistent with equity, it was approved and agreed to accede to the same; and consequently to authorize the Palicol chiefs hereby, in so far as the estate of the deceased Secunde Onstee has claims on the delinquent merchants, to find the settlement of that debt from the proceeds of their rejects, which will shortly be sold here, in so far as the share of each of them therein shall participate. On account of the demonstrated lack of a sufficient number of washermen's stones, it was not only agreed to fully approve that the servants have had the 40 pieces of washermen's stones, with which the floor of the packhouse was covered, lifted from there and delivered to the washermen, but furthermore, as this number is not yet sufficient according to their letter, to authorize them to requisition 50 stones of three feet square from Sadras instead of the 150 stones additionally requested, in the trust that with this number and those now provided, they will be able to manage very well at Palicol. Yet, on the other hand, it was again agreed to deny the servants' request to be allowed to take 4 or 6 more peons into service on account of the insecurity of the roads, since an unfortunate incident or two that befell our letter-carriers between here and Palliacatta does not constitute sufficient reason to oblige this Council to increase the number of peons, all the more so since it has not yet been proven whether the two missing peons were murdered on the road or deserted. Upon the communication of the servants by letter of the 10th of November of the previous year, stating that the father and uncle of the Company's old merchant Daatcherom Koermana, finally taking his condition to heart, had decided to stand surety for him for the security of the Company, for all such monies as would be advanced on the Company's behalf to Koermana for the delivery of linens, and that they consequently had assigned to him and Wisjappa Tjittana Chittij the delivery of the cloths requisitioned for Europe and the Indies for this year from Bimilipatnam, amounting together to 296 packs, for the previous year's prices, it is not only resolved and understood to approve the aforesaid contract, but also to insert herein the contracts transmitted thereof, which upon examination were found to be according to order.
