It is further understood to order the Secretary, as he is hereby ordered, to note the aforesaid granted request under the guarantee mentioned hereabove. —. 108 177 The 25th April Ao 1757. general balances have been continued inland, in consideration that it is not only beyond all probability that anything of it will ever come in, but also that, if against all likelihood something of it might be recovered in time, the Honorable Company's claims nevertheless remain of the same value, and that thus the annual transcribing thereof is a very useless and redundant work. The same consist, according to a Memorandum drawn up by the Chief Administrator by order of the Lord Director, in the following, to wit: Ao 1656: Robbed by the Walreese pirates around Sindie from a Moorish ship, booked on the 8th October thereafter, of which, according to evidence under date primo March Ao 1658, was restituted by the Issuradeurs: 8730:—:—, ƒ 15153:15:2. 1664: Robbed near Bilpaar from an Amed Abaad caravan, ƒ 573:5:4, but brought back according to the books of that year on the 16th June: 840:2:4, 7893:3:—. 1665: Primo January, some Oernies robbed from an Amed Abaad caravan to the value of: ƒ 758:2:—, of which was compensated to the Honorable Company by the caravan leader: 392:—:—, ƒ 366:2:—. 136 The 25th of April Anno 1777: to depart, which entry ran on extorted moneys, and according to authorization of Their High Noble Lordships was recorded on the general settlement with ƒ 15931:16:8. 30 Anno 1731: In the Books of 1729/31, according to authorization of Their High Noble Lordships, the cash spent at Court for the purpose of obtaining a Royal Firman for the construction of a New Lodge, was recorded here on the general settlement pro Memoria at 47738:1:8. The former Director Pieter Lourens Thoonsen for his remaining Debit, to be seen in the journal of 1725/66 Page 45 17123:17:—. The deceased Cashier Johannes Rijkagem van der Heijden for his arrears in the Books of 1723/32 Page 34 lb 51 to 118:2:8. The cashiered provisional Cashier Arij van den Broek for his remaining Debit, to be seen in the aforementioned Books and Pages 15:7:—. The cashiered Warehouse Master Willem van der Daar for that which he still remains in Debit to the Honorable Company, as appears from the closed journal of Anno 1768 Pages 19, 21, & 38, which, pursuant to Their High Noble Lordships' most respected order contained in letters of the 9th of August 1760, must continue to be carried within the lines as a memorandum with 2029:3:—. And in order that the Suppliers may begin the work without loss of time, and be able to pursue the same with vigor, an advance payment of Rupiahs 100,000 in cash shall be made to them immediately upon the contracting, and subsequently, gradually so much more as shall be deemed necessary, in proportion as the goods are brought in. 4. The 7th of June Anno 1777: vendue master a sum of 20794.¼ Rupees. That the said Mr. Bosman withdrew and took to himself these funds from the vendue master without the knowledge of your petitioner and consequently without his consent, without the petitioner ever having seen a single cent of it. That when we, the petitioner, addressed Mr. Bosman regarding this, His Honor undertook to account for these funds where appropriate, and in proof that this accounting encumbered him alone, handed over to the petitioner the written proof of which an authentic copy accompanies this. — That a claim was made on these funds by the Honorable Company's brokers, namely Mantchergie Gorseedtje and Gouwenram Boederam, on the grounds of two bonds chargeable to Mr. Bangeman totaling 23000:— Rupees and a book debt totaling 4867:— Rupees, with the request that the aforementioned sum of 20794:¼ Rupees might be transferred in reduction thereof to the Honorable Company, to serve as a deduction from that which the brokers were at that time in arrears to Your Honors. That the said Mr. Bosman, without doing anything therein, allowed this to continue for a time, until the aforementioned brokers repeated their request in a written petition to the Honorable Director and Council, whereupon by Resolution of the 23rd of February Anno 1774 it was agreed to grant the brokers' request.

15: 9:—: The 7th of June Anno 1687: to consent and to order the Executors to pay that which the Estate of Mr. Bangeman was owed, under security of restitution, in reduction of what the Brokers, as aforesaid, had to claim thereon, in so far as it could extend, with the addition, however—the petitioner does not know why this Resolution should not be carried into execution without first having the approval thereon from Their High Excellencies. That Their said High Excellencies, as the petitioner was informed in the year 1775, replied to this that they fully trusted that care would already have been taken to have the aforesaid sum transferred without delay into the Company's Treasury by the Executors of the deceased Secunde Bangeman. That said Mr. Bosman nevertheless remained negligent in complying therewith, and having since defected to the English Company, took these monies with him and still holds them. That the petitioner was thereupon addressed by the Fiscal Mr. van der Pleijden as co-executor for the payment of the aforesaid sum of Rop:s 20794: 1/4. —. That this sum not only exceeds all the worldly assets the petitioner possesses more than twice over, but that the petitioner also considers himself, under correction, not to be liable therefor. That the petitioner has pointed out above:— 160 The 7th of June Anno 1777:—. pointed out that Mr. Bosman, without the petitioner's prior knowledge and on his own authority, collected these monies from the vendue master and appropriated them, and that because this gentleman was at that time the Commander, there remained no means for the petitioner to force him against his will and inclination to repay them, or the petitioner would have had to expose himself in a very evident manner to his absolute ruin, with a man like Mr. Bosman, capable of the most violent means to resist this. That the petitioner nevertheless did everything in his power to bring Mr. Bosman to pay off these monies, and has even now after his flight to Bombay conferred with him amicably about it, and showed him that justice demanded of him not to leave the petitioner in distress, but that Mr. Bosman absolutely refused to repay these monies, and that nothing can be recovered from him by legal means either, since in Bombay they refuse to receive legal claims against Mr. Bosman. That he hopes that all these reasons and motives may release him from all further liability in this matter, and that he may be acquitted thereof by Your Right Honourable, or if Your Right Honourable should find that this matter cannot be disposed of here locally, then the petitioner requests that all the aforesaid 160 The 7th of June Anno 1777: aforesaid points about which he feels aggrieved may, under Your Right Honourable's favorable recommendation, be brought before Their High Excellencies the High Indian Government. That finally, the petitioner considers in any case that even if all the above-alleged points should not be found to be of such merit as to release him from all further claims and demands in this matter, he can at the very strictest be held liable for no more than half of the capital misappropriated by Mr. Bosman, since he could with no reason demand of Mr. Bosman, who was a co-executor, to deliver the entire capital into his hands, or the petitioner would have had to employ means and ways that would have exposed Mr. Bosman's absolute insolvency and would have utterly and publicly disgraced him, to which he, as a subordinate servant, believed he could not proceed without incurring great blame against a gentleman who was seated here at the head of the Government, and in whose hands all the interests of the Company at this place were entrusted: That the petitioner is also utterly unable to pay this sum at once, and that if he should nevertheless be forced to pay without delay, he will have to sell all his possessions to the very last chair in his house, to his great detriment, without any likelihood that from such a ruinous sale half the amount of the monies misappropriated by Mr. Bosman could be realized. Whereupon having deliberated and having taken into consideration that to the aforesaid Loewe in Ceylon for travel expenses, according to an account received from there, only Rupees 240:— were furnished, and that the expenses incurred of Rupees 365:— in a journey of over three months and a stay of 18 days at Bombay and at Mahim are very moderate, it was approved and agreed to have the excess spent over received of Rupees 125:— reimbursed to him, as also the house rent and board money due to him amounting to Rupees 99:44; further having taken into consideration that house rent here is very expensive, and that the said Engineer will have to remain here throughout the entire bad monsoon, it was further approved and agreed to grant to him, subject to the favorable approval of Their High Excellencies, for ordinary and extraordinary house rent 20 Rupees per month; and lastly it was agreed to have the aforesaid account received from Ceylon of Rupees 240:— entered into the books, and to charge this amount, as well as all other expenses of this commission, to the account of the Piling work, for the examination of which the repeatedly mentioned Engineer was sent over here in accordance with Their High Excellencies' order. It was approved and agreed to consent to the request of the First Clerk Jacob Goverts, in accordance with Their High Excellencies' dispatch of the 14th of August 1772, to be allowed to enjoy 30 Guilders per month since the 8th of March 1776, when his five-year contract of 24 Guilders expired. Due to the long expiration of time, it was approved and agreed to promote the Absolute Assistant at 24 Guilders and Sworn Clerk of the Secretariat George Christoffel Koeff, upon his request made thereto, to Bookkeeper at 30 Guilders per month. Upon a report from the Warehouse Master van Citters, stating that during the heavy storm that arose very unexpectedly and with great violence on the 24th of April last, the Company's Linen Tent suffered damage and was blown down, and that by this accident much damage was suffered by all the cloths, with the request that this Government be pleased to qualify him to restore the tent, and that the expenses required thereto, being an extraordinary case, may not be reckoned under the annual wear and tear and the fixed sum that was allotted to him according to the regulations for the maintenance of the Linen Tent in the year, it was after deliberation approved and agreed to have the condition of the aforesaid Linen Tent examined by special Commissioners, as well as how much the expenses for its repair would amount to, in order to be able to decide further and formally thereon after obtaining the report.
