the trade, while we have been promised that all haste will be made with the remaining vessels, which are estimated to be eight to ten in number, some of which are only lying in wait for the pepper and tin, which products are expected daily both from the highlands and from Banca. But we have reason to fear that the departure of the subsequent vessels will not proceed so swiftly and according to the desire of Your Right Nobles, unless the pepper and tin should be brought in soon, because, as we are assured, nothing of it remains here in stock, while it seems to be the Palembang way to first make promises in order to keep up appearances, and afterwards to seek all frivolous evasions and pretexts to excuse themselves for the non-fulfilment of their promises. For, to make good for the presumptive small delivery of pepper, it is now reported that in an entire dessa or district of pepper plantations, the pepper vines have been scorched by the severe heat and gnawed through by a sort of mice, whereas beforehand nothing of this was heard, but all reports concerning the crop were very favorable. And regarding the tin, they also did not take care that the same was in sufficient supply, but only afterwards, when the West monsoon had already set in, did they begin to send the vessels to Banca to collect it, concerning which the excuse now is that those small vessels, on account of the very strong winds that blew, which indeed is also the case, did not dare to depart from the Sungsang and put to sea, which, however, could have been prevented by an earlier dispatch for that purpose, and if they had paid regard to our representations and recommendations to make sure that a timely and sufficient supply of tin was at hand. We can assure Your Right Nobles that we have not neglected to urge most strongly both an early dispatch and an ample delivery of pepper and tin, and shall not fail, with respect to the vessels yet to depart, continually to bring this to the attention of the prince. Who the ambassadors of this year will be is still unknown; one has indeed been mooted, but this is not yet positive, and we have tried to learn this from the King and to dispose His Highness toward nominating his ambassadors, but until now this has remained postponed. By the King's Envoys, the Khedemang Satja di Nata, and the khingebe Tjitro Troenoe. To His Honour, The High Noble Great Honourable Lord, Reijnier de Klerk, Governor General, Together with The Honourable Councillors Of the Netherlands Indies. High Noble Great Honourable Lord, Honourable Sirs, As the King's envoys, the Khedemang Satja di Nata (the same who in the year 1776 had the honour to appear before Your High Honours with the title of Khingebe as second envoy) and the khingebe Tjitra Proino, are finally to undertake the journey to the capital, we have the honour to let this serve to accompany them, and further to report that a skipper of a Riau vessel, having entered this river and come upstream to request permission to sail with that small vessel up to the settlement, we were meanwhile informed that in the past year he had smuggled a large quantity of tin outside this river, which had been brought to him there by a vessel. Whereupon we had him taken into custody to investigate the accusation against him, and in the meantime held his vessel secured between two cruisers until the truth of this deed might be established. He subsequently came to a confession, and we having then given the order to bring his vessel upstream, the murderous rabble of the same, through carelessness and too great a trust on the part of the commander of the cruiser, found an opportunity to treacherously murder a sailor on the pancalang de Wolf, as well as to wound the commander and two other seamen, and subsequently, after two of those murderers had also lost their lives through the resistance of the other sailors, to flee back to their vessel, cut the anchor rope, and escape, while the adjacent pancalang de Nepthunus was unable to pursue the same, because the native vessel had a multitude of oars on board, which greatly aided its escape. We immediately notified the King of this and requested his assistance to pursue those murderers, who thereupon immediately caused some vessels to be equipped for that purpose, which searched for them for some time but could not find them. In the meantime, hoping for Your High Honours' approval, we have had the juragan of that vessel, named Abdulla, riveted in a heavy iron chain, in order thus to bear this punishment as a deterrent to his nation and all such adventurers. The lighter Zwolt, mentioned in the first signatory's respectful separate letter of the 25th of February last, was finally delivered to us on the King's behalf, without any artillery or any other ammunition of war, and with such equipment goods as the accompanying note indicates. We did indeed inquire after the one and the other, but received as answer that Pangeran Oesoep had taken everything from it, and that the vessel had been recaptured in that state. The aforementioned small vessel is moreover very leaky and battered, and as it has not a single serviceable sail, and we cannot provide it with one due to our own lack of provisions, we most respectfully request that a set of sails may be sent for it, so that when it is repaired of its defects, it may then be able to undertake the return journey to Batavia. It having been prohibited by the King for a short time to gather more oyster shells from the reef, because the Chinese, through their great greed for profit, ruined them to such an extent that one could no longer obtain living oysters, the lime kilns have had to stand idle since that time, and we have been unable to purchase those building materials; wherefore we petition Your High Honours that, for the progress of the construction of the lodge, 400

400 tubs of lime may be sent, as well as the measure with which the same is measured at the headquarters, to prevent disputes with the ship's officers. Since, in accordance with our respectful letter of February 25th last, the five purchased half-pieces of common bleached Guinea cloth and one piece of bunting delivered to the chief surgeon were used up due to the ulcers from which the majority of the servants at this office are suffering—which number has considerably increased due to the present attendance of so many journeymen at the construction of the new lodge—we hope for Your Right Honourables' favorable approval. And whereas the chief surgeon had not yet received his annual allowance, of which one piece is even still missing, we proceeded again to purchase three whole pieces of coarse Guinea cloth, and were forced to pay ƒ 13: 10:— for each piece due to the scarcity. The 4300 pieces of cadjang mats shipped to the headquarters on the vessel of Kiaij Maas Braham were received back from the same upon the return of that vessel, and were entered into our books at their cost to be used at this office. However, as there were some 2500 among them that are entirely useless, caused by the incident that befell that small vessel and mentioned in the first signatory's humble separate letter of January 7th last, we most respectfully request Your Right Honourables' permission to write them off in our books, just as we also petition regarding: 6403 pieces of roof tiles, and 260 ridge tiles, which are also still carried under the remainders in the books of this office, but which were smashed to pieces and cracked due to a fire that broke out in their storehouse in the year 1774, which we failed at that time and thereafter to dutifully report to Your Right Honourables. On the recent departure of the small vessel De Cornelia Adriana, having been committed by us, and for which we most humbly beg Your Right Honourables' pardon, to charge the headquarters with the amount of the goods delivered short by that small vessel here: 12 pieces of locking brackets, 50 Chinese planks, and 189 balls of Surat soap, we take the liberty of carrying this out and offering Your Right Honourables the invoice of charges regarding this, as we also have the honor to do with the survey report dated the last of February of this year, to which is attached a memorandum showing how much has already been used of the goods found surplus at the survey of the last of August 1777. However, since the iron remaining and also found surplus at that time has since been consumed, and there was nothing left in remainder, we were compelled, both out of necessity and so that the construction of the lodge would not be delayed by it, to purchase 2 picols of that mineral at ƒ 22: 5: 8— per picol, concerning which we petition Your Right Honourables' approval. The blacksmith at this office having died, and that work now being attended to only by a Company slave who has a little knowledge of that trade, our most respectful request is that through Your Right Honourables' favorable care we may be provided with a capable blacksmith at the first opportunity; while we further most humbly request Your Right Honourables that, upon sending military personnel hither, the requested number of seven may be increased by two more, since another soldier has died since that time, and due to the death of Corporal Willem Mackenzie we have provisionally entrusted the performance of that duty to the soldier Jacob Seeltje of Lauenburg, who arrived in India in the year 1776 on the ship De Triton as a soldier at ƒ 9. He is a decent and capable man, which gives us the liberty to petition Your Right Honourables for his confirmation. Sijbrand Maijer, nominated as gunner in our respectful letter of February 25th past, having also died, we have the honor to present to Your Right Honourables the petition of the sailor Hermanus van Beek, requesting to be appointed as such, to which we take the liberty of adding our respectful solicitation to that end. We also have the honor to submit to Your Right Honourables the following request from Fredrik Lange of Prussia, soldier at ƒ 12: and arrived in India in the year 1775 on the ship Holland as a sailor, and from Daniel Gerard Peijs of Wismar, who arrived in the country in the year 1776 on the ship Beekvliet as a sailor at ƒ 8 -, tending to be permitted to exchange duties with each other, and thus the former to be changed back to sailor, and the latter to soldier. 1777: favorably pleased to pass the late issue of those instruments to six similar vessels; 3rdly, because among these five vessels there happen to be three that the King granted to the three foremost Princes of the realm, namely the Pangerans Depati, Aria, and Soeria, who would have pouted and might have caused discontent, as it constitutes a major means of their livelihood had they been deprived of the intended profit; 4thly, because, in submission to Your High Excellencies' wiser judgment, according to our humble opinion, we have taken into consideration that while the pepper and tin were present, it was nonetheless better, though somewhat late, to deliver these products into the lap of the Company rather than leave them here, since the smuggling-prone Palembangers would then have sought every means to dispose of at least the tin in an illicit manner elsewhere. Which reasons we hope will to some extent merit a favorable consideration from Your High Excellencies regarding this our conduct. The failure of the pantjalling Edam to arrive causes us anxiety as to whether some misfortune at sea may have befallen that little vessel, and its absence significantly hinders us in the cruising operations, since of the three pantjallings currently present, only the Snoek is fit to put to sea, while the Wolff, due to a lack of sails, is used to man a post in the river, and the Neptunus has been hauled onto the slipway for repairs due to manifold defects. The said pantjalling Edam would be all the more useful to us at present, since English smugglers have again appeared in the fairway; for on the 8th of this month a boat of that nation, belonging to a bark cruising in the fairway, appeared at the Sungsang to ask for news, both regarding one of his companions whom he said was to come from Batavia and await him there, or whether the same had left letters for him there. But he was answered that he well knew that was no place to receive news or letters from his nation, and that he therefore had to go back outside, whereupon he pretended to intend to depart for Riau. Furthermore, near the Bay of Klabat, another ship and a smaller vessel were seen, of which it is not yet known to which nation they belong, though by conjecture they may well be English. Although the English are thus again roving in the Bangka fairways, we nevertheless rest assured—apart from the fact that the well-known incident with Kiai Maas Braham has aroused a great aversion to that nation—that the currently departing juragans will in no way engage in any smuggling trade with them, as they, as well as the senders of the vessels, are known to be people who do not engage in any trade with any foreign European nation. The ship's carpenter assigned here having passed away, we supplicate Your High Excellencies that a competent individual may be dispatched to us at the first opportunity, since working with native ship's carpenters proceeds very slowly and with Chinese turns out to be excessively expensive.
