1779 139 inhabitants were pleased that matters had now progressed so far that there was some indication that the Company wished to establish itself here, yet they still doubted whether it would actually happen, as the fickleness of Sarieph was well known to them, he being inclined to promise much but fulfill nothing at all. Furthermore, he gave a detailed account of the ill-treatment which Syeen Sarreph inflicted upon his brother-in-law, being too lengthy to set down here. Finally, Jarieph, his brother-in-law, requested me to have patience until such time as the fast was over, and advised me, if I wished to request anything of Sarieph, to do so in an authoritative tone accompanied by three communities, as I would find this to be very best for me. I thanked him for his warning, whereupon, after a friendly reception, he took his leave. Immediately after his departure, Sarieph had a female slave brought to the back and had her stabbed to death with his pike and thrown into the river, and had a boy hung up by the hands, who hung for about 3 hours, whereby his arms were paralyzed. The crime of the former was that she was supposed to call the latter and he had stayed away too long. From this it is evident how tyrannically he he treats his people, this being the third person whom he has had put to death in our time. The parole was Abetons. Monday the 9th of October: A Banrarese arrived at my quarters, who requested of me a loan of 3 reales, which I gave him. Thereupon he told me that, since he saw that I was much better in dealing with the native than the Sultan, he would disclose something to me, but on this condition, that it be kept secret. This I very gladly granted him. Upon this promise, he declared to me that he had heard the Sultan say, though not very clearly, that once his son had returned, and the benting and everything was made ready, he would in time make use of both the one and the other, but that the Dutch were too strong for him, yet by cunning he would achieve his purpose. I thanked the native for this communication and, after a friendly reception, let him go, requesting him at the same time to inform me if he heard anything, as I would reward him richly for it, which 141. he promised me. This having been made known to Sarieph, he came along in person. Meanwhile, I thanked Sarieph in the most friendly manner and discussed with him why no inhabitants were permitted to come to me. At this he stood as if astonished, saying that such was not his order, and that I should just summon at my pleasure whomever I saw fit. Wishing to make use of this, I immediately had the Banjarese summoned to me who had previously disclosed to me the discourse of Sarieph, and who also appeared by name while Sarieph was still with me. He also charged the said native in my presence to come to me whenever I had him called, to which the latter submitted. Furthermore, I asked Sarieph what the reason might be that no inhabitants obtained a pass to sail to Landak, since it was well known to me that plenty went upriver. Whereupon I replied to him that such opponents must then suffer the consequences of being fired upon with live ammunition by the pantjallangs. To this he served that it would be ill done, yet he would inform his inhabitants of it so that they might guard themselves against harm. Hereupon I gave him to understand whether he had not made a promise to Their High Excellencies to take care of the Company's affairs as well as his own. This having lasted for about 3 to 4 years, Mampauwa was in danger of being attacked by the Palembangers and Collokers, for which reason Sarieph's father sent him to Banjer to try his fortune there. Here he asked for the sister of the ruler there; the latter permitted him to marry her and elevated him to Pangerang. However, his spirit being too restless to remain quiet, he undertook to plunder several vessels. Finally, at the instigation of Radje Hadje, he was bold enough to capture a Chinese junk before the river and massacre its crew. Banjer's ruler took this very ill, for which reason he had his kris taken from him, a sign of arrest among the natives. Over this Sarieph was offended in the highest degree and went to Radja Hadje to report this, requesting his assistance at the same time, because he intended to overrun Banjer. The latter advised him against undertaking such, saying that he would see to it that he obtained his release and the lifting of this arrest, whereupon this enterprise went up in smoke. Having obtained his release through the intercession of the king and Radje Hadje, Sarieph wanted, some time after this event, to seize authority in Banjer, but the Panumbahan, discovering this, had Sarieph ordered to leave Banjer and seek his fortune elsewhere, refusing at the same time to let him take his wife and children with him. Having to obey this command, he drew many inhabitants to himself through gifts and departed with them for Pasier, where he found a French ship lying laden with opium, which he immediately sold for less in order to obtain money by this means. The Frenchman, discovering this, reproached Sarieph about it and said that his price was ruined by this, as he could not give the opium at this value. He flatly denied selling under value and appeased the Frenchman by presenting him with four captured slaves. The Frenchman, being pleased with this gift, invited Sarieph to a midday meal on board. Sarieph refused this, but promised to avail himself of it another time. Sarieph, having obtained money through the sale of the opium, bought for this 4 penjajaps, a kind of pirate vessel of about more or less 40 lasts in size. After the lapse of 1 to 2 months he went on board with the Frenchman and told him that he would now take the midday meal with him. The captain thanked him for the honor done to him, led Sarieph into the cabin, and further gave orders to the cook to prepare something. That Sarieph had then proceeded thither and after a year requested Bantam's ruler to be allowed to stay here. This being granted to him, on condition of watching the Landakkers and assisting them if they should be hard-pressed by enemies, and that while his 6 keels were in the river, he had been forced after the lapse of two years to scrap the same, because they had been eaten up by the worms. Finally, Radje Hadje had come with two ships and a bark and had gone with Sarieph to Sangano and devastated it, but had found nothing of value there. Subsequently, Sarieph had requested Radje Hadje to attack Banjer; such was refused by Radje Hadje. At this Sarieph had become angry, but Radje Hadje had appeased him by elevating him to sultan and departed again for Rio. But I was not in a position to hold the benting in my power, nor did I wish to undertake anything without orders from Your High Excellencies; therefore it was advisable to depart from him amicably and await further orders from Your High Excellencies, just as we also parted from each other in a show of friendship and maintain correspondence, though we guard ourselves as much as possible against his ambushes, since we see that his friendliness is merely deceit. In the morning we went ashore at Batoelayang and selected a place there, being a large cliff from which we could see Sarieph's dalam and also out of the mouth of the river. In the meantime we did our best all around to make caltrops and pits, with a strong palisade of trees about ¼ mile in front of us, and upon some tree roots we mounted swivel guns, and had a sort of clearing made around the same so that we could walk around them, and made the access to them impassable with caltrops. I then pretended to be satisfied with this; furthermore, Saaydja Natta had me requested for 4 to 5000 reals of eight because he claimed that there were actually diamonds which he wanted to purchase for the Company, but I told their people that I had no cash on hand, yet as soon as the bark or pantjallangs arrived from Batavia I would appear in person before the Pangerang. Meanwhile, I was assured by the Captain Chinese of Landak that Saaydja Natta had dispatched over 200 carats of diamonds to be sold to the Buginese. This Captain Chinese had come down to request the Company's assistance, for which reason I shall make his account known here verbatim: being at Landakkoot, he had requested rice from the Pangerang for his people who worked in the gold mines, but the Pangerang had replied to him that Landak now belonged to the Company, and likewise the gold mines, so that he had to address himself to them for rice or other goods; that henceforth he did not want to meddle with the gold mines, and only wanted to keep the diamond mines for himself. Furthermore, having asked the Captain how many gold mines there were in Landak, to which the answer was six, but that they had only been started nine months ago and it would certainly take another year before they could yield the least profit; whereupon I asked him how much gold Landak could possibly yield in gold if it were worked.
