from Maubara to facilitate the trade with Belo, we judge with you that it would not accord with the interests of the Company to incur any notable expenses in order to bring those peoples to their duty. The remoteness of the Company's possessions on the one hand, and the proximity of the Portuguese establishment on the other, seems to lead them naturally to the latter mentioned place, and it would be difficult to stem this natural course of trade. The shipping of the Macassars in Solor increasing from year to year, and the search for the Company's traders thereby becoming unsafe, causes no small obstruction to trade. The pantjalling the Johanna Adriana, having been deemed too large to track down the Macassars in these waters, who usually lie concealed in corners and holes, was already sent back to Batavia in the year 1777. However, the cruising against these smugglers is continued annually with native vessels, which are hired for that purpose at the expense of the captured prizes. It is therefore to be wished that the dispatch of a pantjalling to cruise against the smugglers, and at the same time to convoy the Company's subjects who sail for petty trade, may answer its purpose. The aforementioned circumstances have meanwhile had a completely detrimental influence on the trade of this trading post, both with regard to obtaining the requested goods for the headquarters, as well as in respect to the sale of merchandise here. Of the demanded 600 picols of wax, the servants write that they have not been able to obtain more than 421 picols and 118 3/4 lb, while in that quantity were also included 56 picols and 83 3/4 lb received as a gift. All possible means are being employed to satisfy the requisition, and in the past year 1778 we succeeded once in completely satisfying the demand for 600 picols of wax. And we further look forward to the report of the servants as to whether the aforementioned 49 pieces could still be disposed of at this office, or whether they were forced to send them back to Batavia. That the remainder of Patna chintz has been disposed of, we have already had the honor to inform Your Right Honorable in our reply to the previous year's Extract of the Letter from the Fatherland. We have by no means been able to take satisfaction in the justification of the engineer Pilon, ostensibly to demonstrate his innocence regarding what appears to the charge of that engineer in our aforementioned letter of 15 October 1773. We shall not take the trouble to enter into a refutation of that justification, as we presume that its groundlessness will have been no less apparent to Your Honor than to us, and this perhaps is the reason why Your Honor found it unnecessary to demand a report from the former chief Cornabé on what was set down regarding him by Pilon; but then it surprises us not a little that Your Honor, in your rescript, did not confront the servants with this, and even more that Your Honor did not yet cause the engineer Pilon to be corrected in a suitable manner on account of his far-reaching negligence, which was now fully proven, joined with his shameless pretense. 19. we have observed with displeasure the increase of defects in the Company's buildings, and especially in the church newly built a few years ago, so that the costs of the repairs will run noticeably higher than was calculated in the beginning. The speedy transfer to Batavia of the Minister Wiltennaar has surprised us. As that teacher was sent by you to Timor only a few months ago, it cannot be imagined that in so short an interval the shortage of ministers in Batavia would have increased to such an extent that his service there was absolutely required. Still less can we assume that by means of that transfer you intended to show the said Wiltennaar a singular favor. Yet we could not reconcile that assumption with the description which you yourselves previously gave us concerning the offensive conduct of that teacher. And even if his behavior had improved to such an extent that he was now capable of edifying others by his example through peacefulness and a fitting respect for his superiors, it seems to us that the congregation of Timor, having been without a shepherd for several consecutive years, ought not to have been deprived of their minister again so quickly. Finding no reasons noted in your resolution whereby the benefit of five percent on the annual purchase of wax and sandalwood for the Company was granted to the chief and the second-in-command at their request, upon which that request was based, we can consequently pass no judgment thereon. 21. We implore Your Right Excellencies' goodness on behalf of the following persons, who, having served out their terms of contract, humbly beseech an increase in salary: Anthony Alling, of Lausanne in Switzerland, who arrived in this country in the year 1767 on the ship Schoonsigt as a soldier, presently serving as chief surgeon and earning f 36 per month since 16 November 1775, to be increased to f 40. Johan Fredrik Minte, of Jullabegij, engaged into service at Batavia in the year 1772 as a soldier for the pen, presently serving as junior assistant at f 16, to be advanced to f 24 under an engagement of 5 years.
