Warehouse Nangazackij Anno 1780. complying with those received orders, exposes himself to the displeasure of the Right Honourable Governor General and the Council of the Indies, and therefore, according to his well-known goodwill towards the Company, is pleased to order, Nangazackij Anno 1780. after having pointed out to them at large the unreasonableness thereof, ordered the carpenter to draw up a further demand, and to state therein the lowest price for which this work could be executed, so as then to take such a resolution as would be consistent with His Excellency the Company's interest and compatible with equity. Nagasaki, Anno 1780. 4 Tuesday 5 Wednesday Nothing occurred. 6 Thursday Some presents requested by the Governor, and delivered. Spoken once again with the Reporter concerning the repair of the sampans. The Reporters make a request for some large printed prints for the Governor, which I delivered to them. Upon my question as to when a start would be made with the demolition of the Cambang warehouses, I received the answer that the Governors would allot them by lottery to the inhabitants of Nagasaki for demolition. After having spoken for well over an hour about various matters, they made known to me their apprehension regarding the embarrassment in which one would find oneself if the sampans were not ready upon the arrival of the ships. Upon my saying that I would not proceed to their repair if the carpenter persisted in his previous unreasonable demand of f 361:—:—, and that I would rather wait for the arrival of our carpenters, they indicated that he would undertake that repair for ps 340:—:—, which was the absolute lowest price he could arrive at, thus already differing f 109:—:— with his first statement. But upon my protestation that this price was still far above the offer I had made, and the carpenter being accustomed to undergo an annual reduction on his demand and arranging it accordingly, in order still to be able to make ends meet amply even if much were deducted from it, they brought up, as usual, the dearness of the woodwork and increased coolie wages. After having explained the groundlessness of this to them, I gave them my final offer of ps 270:—:— to receive a decisive answer thereon. 7 Friday The last paper sent to the Governor received back again, for the reason stated in the text. The Interpreters come in the name of the Governor to give thanks for what was sent, and at the same time return the paper submitted to His Honour, adding that His Honour had declared his willingness to satisfy me in all matters that pertained to his department, but that the management of the trade being dependent on the Reporter Burgomaster and the servants of the Money Chamber, I should apply to the first-mentioned to obtain what was requested therein. I prepared another paper today for His Honour, to have it offered by them at the first opportunity. Concerning the repair of the sampans, nothing further was heard. 8 Saturday A Chinese junk stranded in the bay of Edo. A paper presented to the Reporter Burgomaster. Its contents. The Deputy Reporter informs me that the merchants had news that a Chinese junk had stranded in the Bay of Edo in the province of Awa, which gave rise to much speculation in Nagasaki. What the consequence of this will be, time must tell. I handed him the paper for the Reporter Burgomaster, with the request to offer it to His Honour as soon as possible.
