as can be seen from the contracts and successive letters written thither, both from here and formerly directly from the capital, and among other things in the first place how the princes are obliged to come hither every two to three years, which seems to have fallen entirely into oblivion and upon which, therefore, insistence must be made with all seriousness, and for the present especially in the first place with regard to that of Bima, who having already ascended the throne four years ago in place of his deceased father, ought long ago to have been brought hither by the grandees of the realm to swear to the contract alongside them, but upon which I, in view of the troubles that have arisen here and their demonstrated readiness in sending auxiliary troops, have not been able to insist too strongly; but since the same is now about to marry, as he writes in his recently received letter, I may well allow that this also be postponed for this year, provided that Your Honour insists that he come over in the coming year, when the expected ship will have taken in sappanwood there, for the preparation or felling of which Your Honour will also have to encourage him as well as the grandees of the realm in the strongest manner, demonstrating that this serves the realm's own interest, insofar as there are still mature trees. With respect to this realm, mention is made in the writings of the aforementioned Steijns of certain lands and goods which the Macassar Prince Craeng Sapanang, who is currently with the rebels, is said to have in the Mangaraij, concerning which Your Honour will find further light in my letters to the late Commandant Lecerf, and in his replies, so that I shall only remark in that regard how the Macassars of old have made claims not only to a part of the Mangaraij, namely the districts of Pota and Reo, although they actually belong to Bima; but the same have also been kept in possession by them, through the cowardice or indulgence of the Bimarese, yet the power of the Macassars being now so broken here that they can accomplish nothing more, it is also the right time to drive them from there as well as, insofar as is ever feasible, from the entire opposite shore; meanwhile, I shall still await the report promised by the King and grandees of the realm concerning the aforementioned goods of Craeng Sappana, for the investigation of which Steijns reports that they had sent an emissary to the Mangaraij. Furthermore, I must remark how the Commandant, on the proposal for the relocation of the post, after he had been granted not only the authorization for it, but also the required materials had been sent directly from Batavia, informed me contrary to all expectation that the king and grandees of the realm would not consent to that relocation, or had requested that the same might not take place (a clear proof of how recklessly he handled affairs, about which I also showed him my resentment), afterwards indeed promised to employ the said materials for the improvement of the present post, but up to now just as little further report in that regard has been received from him as anything is to be found about it in the advices of the clerk Steijns, although none of those materials are recorded in the inventory reports. For which reason Your Honour must conduct a proper investigation into where the one and the other have gone or for what work they have been used, and this with all possible attention, to the end that the Company may be indemnified for what has been removed or neglected and the cost of the one and the other may be written off in our books, where it is still running. With regard to Dompo, there is nothing else to note than that Your Honour should likewise urge the king and grandees of the realm to have sappanwood cut and made ready. The same is still indebted to the Company for a sum of Rds. For the rest, then, having nothing further to report concerning this realm, and likewise with regard to Tambora, Tangar, and Pekat, beyond what has been noted hereinbefore, I proceed to the realm of: Sumbauwa, which has already from of old acted in bad faith towards the Company, but concerning which the present prince has especially given proof by supporting the Macassarese in their rebellion, so that the Tomilalang Craeng Bilaadje, together with Datoe Boeling, have come here with a multitude of Macassarese and Sumbawarese and joined them, the first-mentioned, however, having already fallen in battle; upon the receipt of which news the king did indeed try to excuse himself by pretending that he had departed for here on his own accord and that he was said to have been immediately removed from the office of Tomilalang; but the contrary of which I consider so certain, just as it appears to me, that he can no longer be brought to repentance by any gentle means, whereto your honour will nevertheless have to do his utmost, and especially to dispose him still to come hither, which he indeed promised, but from which he has until now excused himself under all kinds of frivolous pretexts; but this not being feasible, your honour will have to urge the sending hither of an embassy from among the principal grandees of the realm, whereto

the Regent is said not to be disinclined, and in that case, or whenever he might truly depart hither, the other princes should also be notified to make their appearance here as well, or else likewise to send emissaries of renown, in order to settle all the disputes among themselves as well as those with Sumbauwa and to conclude them for good. Regarding some other matters, I refer to my latest writing of the 6th of June, ordering your Honour at the conclusion of this realm still to announce to the prince and grandees that in all likelihood a ship will arrive in the coming year to collect sappanwood, in order to exhort them to have a good quantity cut and made ready, in case there should not yet be enough in stock, as the clerk Steijns still maintained. With regard to the negotiation that has subsisted for some years with D'Alij and Palemparang, I have nothing to report for this time other than that your Honour will still have to try to obtain the cannons that were fished up from the stranded ship Aschat, which, as they say, are seven in number to be found there, which is all that Their High Nobles write needs to be negotiated with those princes; whereto I must however add that your Honour will also have to do your best to obtain a certain female person by the name of Amma Lolang, who stays at Salemparang in the negorij Sambalang and for whom I have requested the princes; with whom I still recommend that your Honour, notwithstanding that the negotiation aimed at making a contract with the same is now broken off, maintain a friendly correspondence on all occasions; while in conclusion I refer in general to my successive letters written to Commander Lecerf since my presence here, upon the reading of which it will be completely evident to your Honour that it has cost me quite some trouble and headaches to clear the confusions that took place on the opposite shore so far out of the way that your Honour, with attentive management, will well be able to keep matters in order, which I sincerely wish. In the meantime, I add here some copies of a notice whereby the Frojeneers or so-called Badjo Lauwts, who formerly were subjugated under the realm of Goa, are invited to place themselves under the Company's protection; ordering your Honour in the most earnest manner to induce those who are located at Costi or might arrive in time, through all friendly exhortations, to profit from that offer, showing them that such will serve to their own best interest and advantage, and that they will thus be relieved of all extortions by others. We hereby make known that we have fetched and received with proper honour the first letter from the Lord Governor and Council, which was brought by Radja Iamada, from which we perceived with much joy and pleasure that the wars against Goa and Sanranbonij have happily ended, on which we have the honour to congratulate Your Right Honourables from the bottom of our hearts. Furthermore, upon the return of our envoy Mantrie Litaijoe and associates, accompanied by the Honourable Company's commissioners, we duly received the further letter from the Honourable Company together with the recognition money to the amount of 150 Rds. in payment, which the Honourable Company sends us annually as a generous gift. Which letters we received with a pure and sincere heart, and in order to comply with the contents thereof, we assisted the sergeant with vessels as well as men to transport him and his people everywhere across the islands, for the execution of his customary commission, in order to extirpate the spice trees that might be found anywhere. We have also, according to the esteemed command mentioned in Your Right Honourables' letters, issued orders that no foreign vessels sailing here for trade without Company passes may be admitted, except however all those laden with foodstuffs, such as rice, paddy, also pots, and other further provisions, such as salt, sugar, etc. As for the English and French ships, we testify that they have never appeared here, except once more than 10 years ago, when one anchored in this roadstead, which we immediately caused to depart from here in a polite manner through our interpreter, out of fear that if we were to give harsh words, some harm or harassment might be done to our country in time; of which we have already given notice to the Honourable Company in previous letters. Further, regarding the cannons repeatedly demanded from us by the Honourable Company in the last-mentioned as well as in those letters of several years, we have jointly deliberated thereon, to pray and beseech the same in the most respectful manner under the Crown and Sovereignty of the Honourable Company, the Lord Governor and Council, as much as possible, out of pity graciously to grant that we may retain the same for the shelter and protection of our country. On the 16th of the same month two interpreters came to me, sent by His Highness, to assure me that I had no need to fear, and that His Highness would let me depart with the full moon. On the 22nd of the same month both Captain Lauts departed with twelve vessels in order to cruise for the Cerammese and Papuas, as information had been received that they were staying near Bola and Sambola. performed, starting with which I now have the honour to inform your Right Honourable that the king of Bima was publicly presented here in my presence on 24 November of the previous year. That on 28 thereafter, the king and his grandees of the realm were most strongly urged by me to depart for Macasser to swear to the contracts, as well as to cut sappanwood, both of which articles that prince and grandees of the realm have promised to obey. I also on that occasion, and several days ago, spoke with his said Highness and grandees of the realm concerning the property that Craeng Sappanang is supposed to hold on Mangarij, and asked them most earnestly where it was situated, what it consisted of, and by whom it was administered, and received in reply that although their first emissary had returned from Mangarij, they were nevertheless not able to report anything with certainty, because that envoy had only visited Reo, and not Pola, whither they had anew sent one of their people, who to this day has not yet appeared, but that as soon as news arrived your Right Honourable would be provided a report thereof. The materials sent here from Batavia to the Commander for the relocation of the post were found, after a close examination, to have been used for the most part for the construction of the New House, which was inspected by two commissioners as shown by the enclosed report thereof. The king of Dompo was also admonished to cut sappanwood, and furthermore nothing has occurred concerning the realms of Tambora, Sangar, and Pekat that is, to my knowledge, worthy of your Right Honourable's attention. The Sumbawa realm was likewise urged by letters to cut sappanwood as well as to send their king to Macasser to swear to the contracts, upon which to this day no news or reply has yet been received. Two letters were sent by me to Balij and Salamparang, by which the seven pieces salvaged from the ship Aschat were demanded, as well as a certain female person, Amma Lolang, of which to this day no return report has been received. The notices regarding the Trojeeners were handed over here to the allies, as there was no place here for posting them, while I assure your Right Honourable that those people, upon arriving here, will be treated by me in the most friendly manner. Lastly, here is inserted a letter from the prince of Sumbauwa, which I have the honour hereby to offer to your Right Honourable, with which, with all respect, I subscribe this.
