Concerning this, the first respectful signatory, after having already granted a pass via Batavia towards Java, was informed in good time by good authority that this little vessel was destined to take in, in a sinister manner behind the island of Bangka, at one of the Pangerang de Pattij's tin-supplying places, a good cargo of that mineral, and thus set steer with it towards Riau, where that little vessel would be converted into cash after the sale of the cargo. This we find ourselves obliged to bring respectfully to Your Right Honours' notice. Likewise, notwithstanding all our continual friendly and earnest entreaties to the King for an early and substantial consignment of the products, of which we, to our regret, cannot as yet estimate and determine the calculated quantity, and although the month of April has already half elapsed, hitherto little or no tin from Bangka is brought in. For this the King gives as frivolous reasons an excessively prevailing drought there, by which the processing of the tin was delayed, as well as the childhood disease currently raging there which caused hundreds of Bangkanese to flee into the mountains, and more such exceptions, according to the old Palembang tune. It is, however, quite otherwise situated, Right Honourable Lords. In the rainy season on Bangka, no money is sent there to pay the miners; if it does not rain, then some cash is nominally offered for distribution, on the condition that there must be tin, which the greedy tin administrators well know those poor people are impossible to provide for lack of water, by which that mineral absolutely must be washed. Whatever trouble and diligence we apply to demonstrate to His Highness the detrimental consequences thereof, he seems nevertheless to wish to remain deaf to that side, flattering himself on the generosity of Your Right Honours in such unexpected occurrences. 95 from here this time, to our inward regret, have been fruitless, while we according to oath duty, with good conscience dare assure, to have neglected nothing that might in any way animate thereto; however we still dare flatter ourselves that this year's delivery, although late, will equal the previous one, of which the king has given us the most precious assurance. Concerning such, we have also been compelled to use some connivance in the issuance of the tin passes to Batavia after the ultimate of April, in order not to make the least alteration in that shipment; regarding which we most humbly beg Your High Noblenesses' gracious forgiveness, as also that we, for the reasons mentioned above, made no stir concerning the clandestine sale of a bark present in this little fleet, commanded by Kheagus Berit, by the Chinese juragan Kou Tjoeko to the king for Spanish matten 4000, which only disclosed itself to us privately after the loading of that vessel, the court imagining that we are still ignorant thereof, and having also, to disguise such, placed a Palembang skipper upon it, which masquerade can most clearly appear upon the arrival of that vessel at the main place. Also, the continuous and ruinous teachings of the Arab priests on this and that occasion against the Honorable Company and its humble servants presently seem to awaken a most pernicious influence on the Palembang minds, of which the newly committed violence upon one of the Honorable Company's cruisers can again serve as a proof. It occurred on the 19th of the past month of April that the cruising pantjalling De Wolff, lying at anchor half an hour from this lodge near Palembang Lama, was unexpectedly attacked at ten o'clock in the evening by a party of Palembangese, who most grievously wounded the commander alongside the watchkeeping sailor and a maidservant, and deprived a heavily pregnant maidservant of her life in the most murderous manner, as appears from this declaration accompanying in all respect, which we have the honor most submissively to offer to Your High Noblenesses. The humble undersigned thereupon repaired directly to the king to request His Highness's assistance in investigating this committed violence under the view of the prince's residence, whereof there has not yet been an example; which was also promised to us in the most friendly manner by the king, with a certain sort of Palembang dejection over this insolent violence (as His Highness expressed himself) upon one of the cruising pantjallings belonging to the Honorable Company, my brotherly friend, which is beyond all my expectation, thereupon also directly giving the necessary orders in our presence; but alas, those fine commands, whose interpretation is too well known to his court dignitaries, seem to have remained there, and of the whole affair, no mention or stir is now made at the court. The requisition of timber and ironwork, and awaiting Your High Excellencies' highly respected orders, we take the liberty herewith to manage the requisition of timber and ironwork for that small house for that reason, while we shall furthermore not fail, on a future occasion when the ship's hold permits the taking in of a Palembang or Bangka mast timber, to send such a piece of timber, along with the price thereof, to Your High Excellencies. With regard to the masonry lime, we can sincerely assure Your High Excellencies that we have not increased the price thereof, but that this masonry stiffening has never been obtainable here for less than sp:s 50 per large balijs in cash, and 20 florins per hundred small balijs. Which difference in the prices of 50 and 26 has arisen solely from the large balijs introduced by the former Resident Willem Carpenter van Westerbeek and found to be more advantageous, of which, as well as of a small such measure, we do ourselves the honor of sending Your High Excellencies one sample in kind herewith. But with regard to the small floor tiles, we testify that we found the price thereof to be as such here, without knowing that an increase of 1 pataca was entered in the books by the departed Resident De Vries.
