Serving to our particular grief Your High Nobilities' most wise intention regarding the shipment of the [illegible], the smuggling trade caused thereby, in which, according to private reports, an exorbitant quantity of thirty thousand picols of tin is said to have been brought to Riau: not to wish to attribute this to any neglect of duty of our vigilance through exact cruising, which during that period could only be carried out in and before this river because of the existing war: but to be pleased to take into Your highly favorable consideration that during that time the Island of Bangka was, so to speak, left to itself; Concerning money matters, the humble signatories are in the utmost embarrassment for cash, due to the long deprivation of cash: both for the payment of wages, and for use for the daily household, for which, on account of the actual consumption of rice, we provisionally had to purchase Nine Coyangs of that grain, against the market price of Pmt 100, 80, and 70 the Coyang of 6000 lb, in the hope of Your High Nobilities' favorable approval: being at present destitute of everything, and particularly with regard to Carpentry and Fortifications, wherein, through lack of iron, Nails, and lack of building materials, Timber works, the executions have been noticeably impeded: and regarding Your Nobilities' graciously permitted improvement and repair of this Lodge: the further construction of which, in our humble judgment, is well entrusted to the master carpenter Vos, who seems to have the requisite skill for it. The First respectful signatory takes the humble liberty, pursuant to Your High Nobilities' most wise remark regarding the tin Warehouse, writing Office &a to that end and with humble judgment, for the speedy completion of this lodge, most submissively to propose to the same, to let the execution of both the Warehouses, as well as further buildings, take place more advantageously, by altering the already completed two wings along the east and west curtain: by providing the same with an upper floor, whereby the Warehouses could be found below, and the remaining buildings above, according to [illegible]. In which expectation we take the liberty, instead of the timber works already indented for the Warehouses, most submissively to offer Your High Nobilities this humble Indent of the Materials needed for that purpose: while an Indent of timber works upon receipt of the same, all haste toward the completion of this lodge will be observed with the greatest zeal, expressing with regard to foreign ships our deepest gratitude that it has pleased Your High Nobilities favorably to pass our arrangements made on the occasion when Palembang, in the presence of the pirate Maclaerij with his ship and the privateer vessel The Death and Glory, was threatened with being hostilely attacked: and particularly under Train and War expenses, the hiring of 50 Chinese Coolies whom we, after completion of the most necessary defensive works, discharged immediately one month after the enemy's retreat, which was at the end of May, and have, as much as was ever possible, spared all further expenses: we wish from our hearts that all further expenses will be ceased by a speedy peace, to which the armistice proclaimed by Your High Nobilities in Your most revered Circular of 3 August last, agreed upon by His Britannic Majesty and our republic, gives a flattering hope, after which happy event the collecting of the Arrears will possibly be facilitated, pursuant to Your High Nobilities' respected order of the date 1 July last: for which purpose the humble signatories have already collected an amount of ƒ612:—: for the 100 p:s mill planks delivered in A:o 1780 from the capital to a King's tin vessel: which we took the liberty, having found them noted only on the invoice dated 10 October 1780 and nowhere else, to carry forward to the Sultan's old debt: for which erroneous handling we most humbly request a favorable pardon. After Your Right Honourable and Worshipful's esteemed original of the 20th of May and 22nd of July of this year, carried by the commander Barent Rijndert with the galliot, was duly delivered to us on the 1st of this month, we find ourselves honoured again this morning with Your Right Honourable and Worshipful's friendly original secret dispatch of the 31st, together with a duplicate letter of the 22nd of June last, conveying a packet for the Noble High Indian Government, of which the bearer returns this evening to Your Right Honourable and Worshipful's government. No safer and speedier opportunity presenting itself to us than a fast-sailing chaloup of the free citizen Blank of Samarang, currently lying ready here, which departs tomorrow morning, we shall take the honour to submit the above-mentioned packet most humbly to Their High Excellencies with it, as the Lampong route is attended with much delay, and thus in future no better way remains open to us than that by sea, to which we shall always endeavor to pay our due attention. It was very pleasing for us to learn that the gurab De Snelheijd, the chaloup of Intje Talip, and the Lieutenant Budiman Abdiman Abdul Rahim, with his small keel, had all arrived safely on that coast. However, we are now in apprehension about the last-mentioned Lieutenant, of whom Your Right Honourable and Worshipful pleased to make mention that he had already been dispatched from Malacca on the 20th of May past and had sailed this way, while he has not yet appeared here for the present. We would not have failed to make some mention of the loss of the packet boat De Phoenix in our dispatch of the 15th and 28th of March, had we already been advised of it at that time; but to our surprise, we discover with regret that a chaloup has also met with the same misfortune, of which we have not been informed in any way. To search for the packet boat, we have directly sent a cruiser to Jambij, and have already given due notice thereof to Their High Excellencies, and will omit nothing to discover the missing chaloup. The humble deponent, however, trusting that it was still safe to the east of Bangka Strait, and that he would not be overtaken by that privateer still roaming far to the north, and out of a desire for the speedy dispatch of his journey to the capital, under God's blessing, had undertaken the same. That when he, the deponent, arrived at the latitude of the second corner of Bangka Strait, contrary to all expectation, he caught sight of an enemy ship and was pursued by an armed cutter and two boats, which, however, at the sight of everything being prepared by him, the deponent, for a vigorous defense, backed off and were replaced by the aforementioned ship itself. Whereupon he was so greeted with heavy artillery that he found himself forced, after having thrown overboard the Honourable Company's chest of papers destined for Batavia, to surrender the pantjalling, and was subsequently put ashore at Kedah. That he subsequently traveled by sea from Kedah to Malacca, and then with the gurab De Snelheid steered his course hither. All of the aforesaid having been read aloud and explained to the deponent once again, the deponent testifies that the contents hereof contain the pure truth, and is ready, if required, to confirm this further by oath.
