After the King's tin vessel commanded by Juragan Oesien had on the 6th of this month turned its prow toward Your High Noblenesses' Capital, with my respectful letter accompanying the same, I let this solely serve to report that that keel has since then kept hidden in the river, and has only now departed from the Sungsang, as well as to accompany the bearer of this, being A Bark commanded by the Chinese Juragan Thje Jngtie, in which keel His Highness under the supervision of Juragan Abdul Gaffaar has laden a quantity of 1250 ps tin taken over from a King's Sloop that returned in vain to the Sungsang due to heavy leakage, commanded by the aforesaid Juragan Abdul Gaffaar according to the accompanying letter of the 18th of March of this Year respectfully attached hereto, since which time that keel has gone no further than Pulau Nangka, with which dutiful Communication I presume the honour to be with deep respect. After the bark commanded by the Chinese Juragan Thje Ingtie departed from here on the 16th of this month, it appeared here again yesterday with the unpleasant news that he had been forced by an English ship commanded by Captain John to surrender his cargo, according to this humble accompanying statement, respectfully presented to Your Right Honorable Lordships by the aforesaid Thje Jngtie. The humble undersigned has immediately dispatched the cruising vessel Banca to the Poeloe Nancas with the necessary orders, in order to inquire into the reason for this impermissible detention and whether any smuggling perhaps took place, which subject to wiser judgment does not seem likely, while I have been somewhat informed that the cargo belonged to the well-known Said Aboe Bacas Minschap, to whom the king had granted permission to send it under his name to the capital, and that this Arab, knowing the position of that Englishman near Poeloe Nancas, may have used a trick through the Salembang people who had also sailed over to supervise that mineral. Whether this information is well-founded, however, I do not presume to assert, as, while investigating its authenticity, I have not yet become fully certain. Your Right Honorable Lordships' humble and faithful servant signed G:s Hemmij, Palembang, 12 May 1784 To his Honor The Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed Lord On this day, the 10th of May, in the year 1784 Appeared before me, Matthijs Kuijper, Bookkeeper in the service of the Honorable Company here, and authorized to draft and execute this instrument by the Merchant and Chief of this office, the Honorable Mr. Gijsbert Hemmij, in the presence of the afternamed witnesses, the Chinese Juragan Thje Ingtie, who declared the following to be true and truthful: That he, the Appearer, sailing from here toward Batavia with his bark laden with 1250 picols of tin, for the account of the king and under the supervision of the Palembang Juragan Aldus Gaffaar, about 8 days ago off Poeloe Nancas, encountered an English ship commanded by Captain John, who forced him, the Appearer, to drop anchor, to come aboard his ship, and to bring the bark close alongside the ship. That he, the Appearer, out of fear of the Englishman, having complied therewith, went aboard the ship. That the Captain ordered the hatches to be opened and the tin to be brought to the ship with his sampan by the bark's crew. That he, the Appearer, answering thereto that it was the king's tin for the Honorable Company, The Briton replied that if he, the Appearer, did not comply, he would then sink the bark. That he, the Appearer, having to yield to superior force, complied therewith and had the tin brought aboard the Englishman, the delivery having amounted to fully a quantity of 1252 picols and 58 catties. That the Englishman, upon receipt of that quantity of tin, gave him, the Appearer, a sum of fifteen thousand and thirty-one Spanish reals, calculated at 12 Spanish reals per picol, and let him leave the ship therewith. That he, the Appearer, subsequently, for fear of being harassed any further by the Englishman, drifted away from the ship during the night and sought out this river to give notice of what had occurred. All the aforesaid having been read to him, the Appearer, and explained to him word for word, he, the Appearer, acknowledges the content of this to be the pure truth, and if required, to confirm it further. Having had the good fortune to humbly present my humble letters to accompany the private bark of the Chinese Juragan Ingtie on the 16th of the past month of April to Your Right Honours, I now respectfully let this letter serve again to accompany His Highness's envoys, the Kiai Maas Ranga Alie and Kabebe Satja Deerio, along with three of the King's pepper and tin vessels that have been readied again, namely: Pepper / Tin A bark commanded by Juragan Ango Doeto, laden with 300 piculs / 2550 piculs ditto commanded by ditto Nakaroedien, laden with 500 piculs / 2100 piculs A pantjalling commanded by ditto Neralie, laden with 150 piculs / 100 piculs So the three vessels of the King together have laden 950 piculs of pepper and 4750 piculs of tin. Today, having dispatched to the lighter de Zomer my respectful dispatches along with those of the Lord Commander Chet van Braam, respectfully consigned to Your Right Honours, there appeared here from the Sungsang the persons Joseph Carvalho and Francisco Florenco, both of the Portuguese nation, the former commanding the Portuguese ship Aurora, coming from Goa, and the other the fellow Portuguese ship Cupido, coming from Rio de Janeiro. Their friendly requests were: To be allowed to repair themselves somewhat here from severe leaks, and to be provided with water, rice, and firewood, in order to more safely proceed on their voyage to China. The humble undersigned expressed to them his particular displeasure at the liberty they had taken in coming here in person themselves, instead of first applying to him for permission. They excused themselves, however, saying that the extreme distress they were in had made them assume that a personal request would be of much greater effect, and that by avoiding a mutual correspondence no time would be lost in achieving their objective for the speedy furtherance of their voyage, although they admitted to having been informed by the cruisers not to proceed hither without permission, for which they apologized profusely. I replied to them that I could by no means grant their request to careen the ships, as the condition of this place did not permit it, but that they were permitted to take in water and firewood under the supervision of the cruisers; that they could choose no better place to repair their keels than near the river of Jambi, where there was calm water and good muddy ground, and in order to waste no time, after having provided themselves with some fruits, chickens, etc. here, they should be pleased to depart from here this very evening with a yacht that was just destined with dispatches for the Sungsang. Palembang Yesterday morning, having prepared the accompanying dispatches for Your Right Honorable, with the intention of sending them and subsequently continuing my journey to Malacca, I was immediately thereafter handed Your Right Honorable's further and detailed letters of the 12th of this month by the master of the lighter the Zomer. The contents were very pleasant for me to learn, and for which I express my heartfelt thanks, as well as for sending the Moorish merchant Aadjee Aboe bakas, who has informed me in detail regarding the state of Malacca and Riouw. King of Palembang The Usual Introductions. By my letters of the 16th of May last, I had the honour to inform Your Highness of my arrival with a considerable naval force of the Sovereign of the Republic of Holland in these regions, as well as the reasons for that arrival, and the intention I had at the time to go and punish Raja Haji for his thoughtless recklessness in taking up arms against the Dutch East India Company and waging an open war against the same, although no lawful reasons for this were given on the Company's side. This letter, according to information received, was delivered to Your Highness by the First Resident at Your Highness's court; thus I trust it will not seem strange to Your Highness that I must express my surprise at having received no answer to my said missive from Your Highness. However, I trust that this has not sprung from indifference or contempt for my person, in which the Sovereign of my country can be honoured or insulted, but rather that Your Highness has been prevented therein by other weighty affairs. With this expectation, and the further confidence I have that Your Highness, being a good and faithful ally of the Dutch East India Company, cannot be indifferent to its prosperity, I embrace this opportunity to inform Your Highness that on the 18th of June last, I made a landing at Teluk Ketapang, about 3 hours from Malacca, where Raja Haji was situated and had gathered all his force of chosen people, munitions of war, and provisions, along with a large number of vessels, and that it pleased Almighty God on that occasion so to bless the Dutch arms that I achieved a complete victory over him, in which Raja Haji, together with 3 of his sons and three other princes, a large number of prominent persons, and the greatest part of the Bugis fell in battle, all his artillery and military stores fell into my hands, all his vessels were sacrificed to the flames or captured by me, which latter number between 70 and 80. In a word, the most complete victory that was ever fought over an enemy; I captured 21 standards and flags, among which is that of Raja Haji himself, and the number of bronze cannon pieces large and small amounts to 126, and that of the iron ones 18, which we have taken as booty. This victory resulted in the flight of all other peoples who had encircled Malacca, so that not a single trace of the enemy is to be found in the vicinity of this city and fortress anymore. And I no longer doubt that upon my appearance before Riau and Selangor, those places will also bow before the Dutch arms. I trust that this news will be received by Your Highness with very great pleasure, and that Your Highness will rejoice in our prosperity. To receive word of this from Your Highness in an answer to this letter will give me particular satisfaction, which I shall then also look forward to in due course. With humble reference to my last respectful letters of the 20th and 22nd of this month, I have the honor to reply to Your Right Honorable Valiant Sir's gracious letters also of the 19th and 20th of this month. That on the 27th thereafter, as soon as was possible for me, I dispatched the lighter De Zomer to the capital with the package received from Your Right Honorable Valiant Sir, addressed to His Excellency the Governor General of the Netherlands Indies etc., together with my submissive reports to the said His Excellency and the High Government of the Indies. This being the only and best opportunity I had at hand, my choice also had to be limited to it; I hope therefore that it may achieve success through a swift, desired passage of the aforementioned vessel. On the speedy arrival of the State's frigate of war Juno, I have the honor most respectfully to congratulate Your Right Honorable Valiant Sir, having directed His Most Noble's letter to Count van Rechteren, as is also being done with this one now, to one of the cruisers awaiting His High Well-born. Meanwhile, I consider it a special fortune to have merited the pleasure of Your Right Honorable Valiant Sir with my respectful letter of the 12th of this month, through my humble information offered therewith, and the sending of the Moorish merchant, Said Moebacar, who, upon his return, expressed here astonishing wonder at the State's brilliant fleet, and boasted greatly of it among the priesthood. And since the Moorish Sarangs and sailors were unable to appear before Your Right Honorable Valiant Sir, they have departed on the lighter De Zomer for Batavia at their own request. Although the report of the master of the lighter De Zomer to Your Right Honorable Valiant Sir regarding the armament and crew of that small vessel is true, he was nevertheless very mistaken in his report of its leakage above and below the water, whereas that small vessel has been properly repaired here of those defects and was thus able to undertake its voyage to the capital. I have had the honour to receive in good order your Right Honourable, Valiant, highly respected, and agreeable missive of 6 July last, together with a letter to the King of this realm here, as well as the box of papers addressed to Their High Mightinesses, accompanied by a covering letter dated 21 July from the Right Honourable Governor De Bruijn to the undersigned, delivered per the express courier Juragan Taliep on 23 August. After first delivering your Right Honourable, Valiant, highly respected missive to the King at Court, I immediately ordered the aforementioned dispatches to Their High Mightinesses to set course for the capital on the 25th following, aboard my small yacht De Spion, which had already been planned for that purpose; and I flatter myself that it will reach it shortly, as that small vessel can sail, row, and weather the sea well. Concerning the delivery of your Right Honourable, Valiant missive to the Court, I had to proceed in the same manner as with the others, thus without ceremony, to which the King does not yet feel obliged, so that my proposals were once again fruitless. After reading the said missive, I could perceive little joy in the monarch, but rather great curiosity concerning the further plans of your Right Honourable, Valiant, and by whom Riouw would henceforth be governed, which was left unanswered by me and turned to another topic.
