Arrival of the King of Travancore. His arrival at the Cochin Court. Gifts presented. The ceremonial observed. to report that the King of Travancore, on his journey to the northern states in the month of August 1786, was present at the palace of the King of Cochin. §180: According to custom, we sent the junior merchants Jan Lambertus van Spall and Johan Adam Cellarius to Kristnapoeram near Kalikoilang to welcome him around Kalikoilang. They were received very amiably by His Highness and on this occasion incurred 219 rupees in traveling expenses, which were specified by the Resolution of 25 September 1786 and passed by us as very moderate and unavoidable, for which we request favorable approval. §181: When the highly esteemed King came ashore before the palace of the King of Cochin, he was further welcomed by the aforementioned commissioners and saluted from our city walls with 21 shots. §182: The Governor subsequently, with the Second and some other Members, paid a formal visit to His Highness in the house of Company Merchant David Rahbbi, and afterwards received a very friendly return visit in his garden outside the city from the King and his brother. §184: The gifts that had to be presented at this solemn meeting to the King, his brother, and his numerous retinue amount to 5,170 rupees 12, thus 1,451 rupees 22 more than were given in the year 1753 on a similar occasion. §185: This increase was caused because the retinue of the King this time was much larger and more distinguished than ever before, and because among the gifts of 1753, 106 lb of mace and 204 lb of nutmegs were recorded at purchase cost, in place of which, in the absence of those goods, items now had to be purchased. §183: The ceremonial observed on those occasions is described in detail in our Daily Register under the dates from 21 to 27 August, and concerning what was negotiated with His Highness, the undersigned Governor now reports by separate letter. Write-off thereof. Private gifts. Why they were so generous. To be set off against the received gifts. How much all the gift presentations cost. §186: We therefore resolved at the session of 25 September to have those gifts written off, which we respectfully request may be favorably approved by Your Right Excellencies. §187: In that resolution is also inserted a specification by the undersigned Governor of the private gifts presented and received by him, from which it appears that the received presents are appraised at 1,199 rupees 4, and the counter-presents amount to 1,367 rupees. §188: The undersigned Governor therefore requests Your Right Excellencies to be permitted to keep the received gifts as a remembrance of the King, and to be permitted to set off against them the counter-presents, which amount to fully as much. Memorandum of what has been gifted since primo January last to the date hereof; namely: §189: All gifts made since primo January to ultimo December 1786 amount to 6,161 guilders 19 stivers 8 pence at cost price and 7,523 guilders 18 stivers 8 pence at sale price, and thus 4,955 guilders 19 stivers at cost price and 6,173 guilders 12 stivers at sale price more than in the preceding year; they are specified in the following statement: Cost price / Sale price In the month of January, sent from Batavia, various gift goods for the King of Cochin: 532 guilders 19 stivers / 532 guilders 19 stivers. The overseer of the Timber Yard, Paulus Kip, having submitted a petition to us requesting to be discharged from the Company's service on account of an infirm physical condition and advanced age, we discharged him from it in the session of 9 June 1786 and entrusted the supervision of the Timber Yard to the Lieutenant of Artillery Johan Henrik Vogt, who has duly provided sureties for his administration. Section 195. The head surgeon Joseph Dupuitz departed for Ceylon on the small vessel De Verwachting with written-off wages, as he had not fully served out his contract term, and repatriated on the early ship. Section 196. The Captain-Lieutenant and Commander of the Artillery, Jakob Kraus, passed away on 26 January last. Preparations for its departure to Ponnekeil sent via Ceylon and report therewith that in this Government nothing else has occurred except only that on the 4th of this month the Military Lieutenant Johan Gustaf Klaazen passed away. Finally, on the 28th, the wind became more favorable, so the ship reached deep sea and turned its bow to the south, with that fortunate success that on the 30th thereafter it already dropped anchor at the roadstead of Ponnekeil. 56. The day before yesterday we received via the overland route the Company's papers from that vessel, namely a chamber letter from Amsterdam of which a copy is annexed hereto, and furthermore the bill of lading and the invoices of the cargo for this Government, which consists only of household necessities and amounts to only 25,324 guilders, 12 stuivers, and 8 pence. Whereby our merchants suffer great loss, because they have been left with a multitude of merchandise that they had intended to sell to them. In addition, the lack of money on this coast, due to the numerous remittances to Ceylon in the last three years, is now so great that we have difficulty in meeting the monthly expenses, all of which gives us no great prospect that trade this year will turn out as profitably as last. On the 29th of August of last year, the merchant and fiscal Mr. Nikolaas Wendelin Beijts passed away, and as the junior merchant Jan Lambertus van Spall, who last year had requested to repatriate, received permission for it with the ship Sparenrijk destined for Surat only on the 22nd of January last, when it was already too late to depart with the ships of the second consignment from Ceylon, and he could therefore make no use of it then: we have, subject to the honored approval of Your High Excellencies, provisionally entrusted to him the performance of the offices of fiscal and cashier, and respectfully request that he be favorably confirmed therein by Your Excellencies and favorably recommended to the Noble Esteemed Lords Directors for the attainment of the corresponding rank, his petition being attached hereto.
