Thursday 5 Requested the invoices of the above-mentioned junks; one was also brought into the current again. Friday 6 Saturday 7 Nothing to note other than rapid progress with the Honorable Company's repairs. Sunday 8 The Chief Reporter Mathusero informs me that the Honorable Opperhoofd arrived in Osaka on the 6th of Nigwatsu, or the 25th of the past month. Also received the conveyances of the junks No. 1 and 2 that departed for the Papenberg on the 4th of this month. Monday 9 Strong storm. April Japan at the Factory Tuesday 10 Wednesday 11 Thursday 12 The junks lying in the roads take in goods. Friday 13 The fourth Under-Interpreter Saksabro tells me that since the last fire in the city, the gates of each ward are locked at night, and that no one may or can pass through them after nine o'clock in the evening without a pass from the Governor; and that it is believed the fire that started here on the 15th of this past month was set intentionally so that they might be caught all the better in the future. Saturday 14 I was informed by the Under-Reporter Monsjero that the junk that arrived on the 8th of the previous month will not be brought onto the mud, but is permitted to depart again directly; today a start was also made with loading the same. Sunday 15 Also today the Reporters come to inform me that the repairs concerning the Honorable Company were completed; immediately went to verify everything according to the report and, after examination, found everything in order; also requested a prompt start with those of the Ottona, which they promised me. Tuesday 17 Received a letter from the Honorable Opperhoofd dated Miyako, 30 March, stating that His Honour had presented the gifts in Osaka, furthermore that upon departure he will present the same in Miyako, and on the first of April would continue the journey to Edo. Thursday 10 They appeared at nine o'clock; having discovered a leak in the warehouse De Doorn, immediately had the carpenter inspect everything carefully, who came to tell me after the inspection that some roof tiles had shifted, that it had originated because of this, though the ribs and planks of the roof were covered with white mould on the inside, and even damaged in some places due to the heavy ingress of water; had the said carpenter fasten the roof tiles again and secure them as best as possible, so as to await the arrival of the Honorable Opperhoofd herewith. Friday 11 The Under-Reporter Monsjero comes to show me a Japanese letter from the Chief Interpreter Katsemon who is in Edo, dated the 4th of Sangwatsu or 21 April, in which the Honorable Opperhoofd's arrival on 14 April in the said capital was noted, and that His Honour had not yet obtained an audience, but would likely receive a hearing on the 15th of their month. Saturday 12 Sunday 13 These two days and nights strong rain and winds from the south, whereby the fences of the island collapsed in several places. Monday 14 I was privately informed that the Lord of Satsuma had not been dismissed at his own request; see the note on the 27th of the past month; but was actually dismissed, and that the principal reason for this, as it is said, is that the Lords of Owari, Kii, and Mito, these three being of princely blood and having great influence at Court, and also in the event that there is no crown prince, one of these may be crowned Emperor.

After the bugyo had arrived in the morning, the warehouses being opened, it was found that again in the same place the leak noted on the 10th of the past month in the warehouse De Doorn had worsened considerably. I had a Japanese carpenter come to me and asked him what the reasons for this were, who told me that merely laying tiles and liming could not remedy that leak, for the roof was as much rotted as damaged over two ikken in length and one in breadth; while now the long Court journey of the Honorable Opperhoofd made me fear that perhaps later there would be too little time to properly repair this before the arrival of the ships, and during the imminent rainy season it is to be feared that if it is not soon provided for, it would require a much greater repair, I could not await the approval of the Honorable Opperhoofd. I therefore commissioned the assistants Alexis and Stave to inspect this most meticulously, who served me with the following report: Right Honorable Sir Hendrik Andries Ulps. We have, according to Your Honor's order, proceeded to the warehouse De Doorn, and there found the boards and ribs of the roof over two ikken in length and one in breadth as much rotted as damaged. We hope herewith to have fulfilled Your Honor's esteemed intention, wherewith we have the honor to be. Underneath stood: Right Honorable Sir. Lower: Your Honor's humble servants. In the afternoon the aforementioned reporter handed me a letter from the Honorable Opperhoofd, dated Edo the 25th of May, from which I learned that the plan of His Honor, who had intended to leave that city again around the 11th of that month, had been prevented by the renewed swelling of the legs accompanied by severe pain, and he did not yet know when the farewell audience would be, though it was said to be the 13th or the 17th of the fifth month, being the 2nd of June; also received authority to have the defects on the Honorable Company's champans accurately surveyed under my supervision, and to have the ship's carpenter told to submit his very lowest demand to me, so that upon His Honor's return this can be directly ordered and agreed upon.
