Resolution to allow the cloves to be sold at a reduced price. Having conformed, it has accordingly been approved and understood to have this public auction advertised for the 13th of the coming month of February and to determine the conditions of payment in the manner aforementioned, as well as to immediately place the customary advertisements regarding both matters. Since the cloves are currently so undesirable that, when auctioned against bonds, they do not reach the fixed price, as appeared at the auction recently held in October, whereby a considerable quantity will have to remain unsold if they are not yielded for somewhat less; it has therefore, in consideration of the prejudice that the Company would suffer from retaining them, through the running of the pressing interest of nine percent on the capitals which could otherwise be settled by their sale, and because Their High Excellencies, by separate dispatch to the Director dated 29 June 1786, were pleased to grant authorization to sell them, if necessary, for 30 percent below the usual price, been approved and understood to sell the same at the upcoming auction, in so far as they will not be disposed of together with the nutmegs and mace, if up to 200 Sicca rupees per maund of 68 lb is bid for them, which, compared to the fixed price of 227¼ stivers, differs by more than 12 percent, thus up to 2 percent less than the granted authorization, which however will be amply compensated again by the cessation of the interest mentioned hereinbefore, in the hope that Their High Excellencies, as this resolution has the actual benefit of the Company as its objective, will be pleased to honor it with their favorable approval. The Honorable Director's discourse on the low price fetched by the nutmegs yesterday at the auction and the probable reasons thereof. The matter described in today's secret resolution having been disposed of, the discussion was directed by the Honorable Director to the auction begun yesterday, which is to be continued today, and the little eagerness apparent among the buyers for nutmegs in comparison with October last, when the same, being put up for auction with 5 maons of cloves against the Company's price, fetched from Sr 642:-: to Sr 688:—:- per maon of 68 lb, whereas now, put up in the same manner, only up to Sr 440:-:-: has been bid, which is caused, as the natives say, by a considerable quantity of nutmegs having recently been brought to Calcutta and sold, regarding which His Honor declared that he would try to obtain further information and also, if possible, to get possession of a sample of those spices, in order to be able to give the necessary notice thereof to the High Government. His Honor's proposals to encourage the buyers at the auction to be held today as much as possible. Continuing further regarding the auction, the Honorable Director proposed that, in order to encourage the buyers somewhat better, it appeared proper to His Honor to reduce the stipulated quantity of cloves that the buyers must take with each maon of nutmegs at the regular price from 5 to 4 maons, as these, on account of the loss they give upon resale, certainly also contribute to the low price, and that meanwhile, in order to keep up the price of the nutmegs, which have hitherto run far above the Company's fixed prices, it was necessary to make a fixed determination, proportioned to what they are worth in this country, at which to let them go at auction, and failing to fetch that, to hold them back, in order subsequently to sell them out of hand to the inhabitants in small portions at that price to be determined, with the just-mentioned quantity of 4 maons of cloves with each maon thereof, for which His Honor believed that sufficient opportunity would present itself, or if not, that there would still always be time to reduce their price or to dispose of them at the fixed price; likewise regarding the mace, which seems not at all in demand, as not even the fixed Company's price was bid for it, also proposing to put it up for auction with four maons of cloves with each maon, and thus not fetching the fixed price, to hold it back for the aforesaid purpose. Conformable resolution thereupon. Which having been deliberated upon, it was approved and resolved, pursuant to that proposition, to set the price of the nutmegs at Sr 450:-:- per maon of 68 lb, being over Sr 126:-: or approximately 39 percent above the price most recently fixed by Their High Excellencies, and this with the reduced quantity of 4 maons of cloves with each maon thereof; and if not fetching this, to hold them back to be disposed of according to the proposal, and in like manner to reduce to 4 maons the quantity of cloves to be put up with each maon of mace, and also to hold it back in case it cannot be sold at the fixed price in this manner; and finally, because it does not suit everyone to spend large sums, whereby one or another might find an opportunity to force down the price, to make the lots or bargains so small that anyone can bid on them, thus putting up for auction each time no more than a quarter maon of nutmegs or mace with one maon of cloves. Order to the inland factories regarding the delivery of some trade papers.
