Furthermore, finding myself with still well over a month of provisions in stock, I could see no great difficulties caused by the appearance of Poanili's 30 prahus, especially since I well knew that reinforcements would be provided to me from both the main factory and Gorontalo, as indeed a short time later I was reinforced with a considerable band of Gorontaloans. However, I held an entirely different conception of them than experience came to show me; for when, a few days later, I wished to make use of these reinforcements to take from the enemy his benting, which was manned by at most 70 men, I had about 200 men march out to that end. These were driven back by Poanili's people, about 30 men, so shamefully and cowardly that I thereby lost all the courage and trust that I had previously placed in this nation. This incident gave cause that, the Gorontaloans now being beaten and seeing no Limbottoers come to their aid, this nation began to abandon the Company's fort. And when men attempted to prevent this flight by force, several of them went over the wall of the fort, so that after the passage of a few hours, however full of Gorontaloans the fort had previously been, it was now almost empty. Which conduct then also caused great anxiety in me. Not long after this incident, the reinforcement of 37 Slanorese prahus followed, so that Poanili now found himself powerful enough to cut off the supplies and passage to Fort Leiden both by water and by land. Wherefore I also came to the decision to take the retreat to Gorontalo with my subordinates. King Nackie was indeed in the fort at my departure, but according to witnesses of his own nation, he left it not long thereafter, as did King Tilahoenga, who violently opposed the spiking of the cannon and swore to me with high and solemn oaths not to leave Fort Leiden except upon his death and to care for the remaining Company property as an honor-loving vassal of the Honorable Company. Yet all this was deceit and falsehood, and it is thanks to Providence that after my departure Poanili ventured no attack on the fort, since the Limbottoers had taken to flight at that time. Former Captain Laut Hamir informed me that shortly before the arrival of the cruising fleet, no more than a single barrel of powder had remained in the Company's fort, from which Your Right Honorable can sufficiently gather that the preservation of this stronghold is not to be attributed to the bravery of the Limbottoers, but to the Providence of the Supreme Being. I trust that Your Honors will be able sufficiently to understand the honorable intention from this account as to why I did not depart before the arrival of Poanili, since I was appeased from one day to the next by the Limbotto kings that their people were already on their way to assist Quandang. Yesterday I again received news from Tontolij that Panganilla has arrived there with 8 prahus, intending to call at Quandang, of which I have the honor hereby to inform your Honor, and at the same time to send the original letter from the King of Tontolij in order to learn your Honor's wiser sentiments regarding this in good time, for nothing is better than to take precautions in time, so that one then knows how to help oneself in case of need. Furthermore, I very humbly request that your Honor please insist with the Limbotto chiefs on the sending over of some four hundred able-bodied Limbotto men, since one cannot rely much on such a weak garrison. For although the King of Tontoli states no more than one hundred men with which Panganilla is said to be provided, little reliance can nevertheless be placed on that, because the said His Highness and Panganilla seem to me to be thick as thieves and playing together under one cloak. But I could not condescend to this request, and instead gave them to understand the intention of Your Right Honourables to rebuild the old lodge at their own expense, for I had no authority to take another place for it. I have, however, ordered Resident Baijer not to vacate the Company's old lodge unless Your Right Honourables should be pleased to give orders thereto, all the more because it seems they imagine the Company will always just follow their caprice. How often have I ordered them to repair the Resident's dwelling somewhat so that it might at least stay dry, but no, that they will not do, and the common people are not provided with any provisions. On the occasion that I was at Limbotto, I also took them to task regarding their shilly-shallying with the commissioners whom they had so solemnly promised to let sail across with Mr. van Lutzow to Cottij, and that the same had not departed up to now, whereby they had truly made fools of us all, all the more because Mr. Lutzow was still lying waiting for them everywhere to the considerable detriment of the Company.
