4823. Translation of a Sinhalese ola, brought to the Honorable Dissave Fretz by the Kandyan. Nothing is requested of our Sinhalese Chiefs, but of the Nayakkars who are currently present and claim to be relatives of the King. The Moors, Nayakkars, and the King have confiscated some lands from the inhabitants at their pleasure. They say they must seize the Districts, and with the intention of going to the opposite coast, they have now, three months ago, under the pretext of being criminals, let them depart thither from the Court. Besides this, the maintenance for 14,800 lascorins is withheld from the dispensary, and it is heard that the foreigners have come ashore at Baticaloa. The Sinhalese have not been disloyal from the beginning. Here follow some words that are indistinct and seem to say that the King places no trust in the Sinhalese and that this will lead to misfortune if these things become known. According to your judgment, we can show the paths, and although war is about to happen, your Honor must not fear it, and we will provide all possible assistance. Also, trees are being felled there to make mandus near the gravets. It is said that they will go to Puttelang. This was gathered and seen by the Brahmin of Wannaarponne, Weesoewenadersoepaijer. 4826 An inhabitant of the village of Pormanganie, who has been to Kornagalle, testifies to the following: That leaves tied to sticks and wrapped with an iron wire on which are 3 knots at Kallale is not true, but at Nalletotte, at Kivoeltotte, at Pattietotte, and at Allenestotte, leaves are tied to sticks as an order that no provisions shall be brought from the King's land to the territory of the Dutch; this order was issued 20 days ago now. Odagam Adigaar and the Dessave of Matale have been to the Melegamme on the road to Batikalo and Trinkenomale and have returned, and after their return the Dessave of the Four Korles departed there, but what they have to perform there is unknown to the declarant. At Tatigapattoe order has been given that everything shall be made ready, both provisions, rest houses, stools, etc., until the arrival of the Dessave of the Seven Korles and Palegam Adigaar, who after the Sinhalese New Year, along with an escort of armed men from Kandia, are expected to come down to march to Silduw. Odagam Adigaar and Matale Dessa will march with an escort of armed men to Putulang; the Dessave of 4 Korles will march with his men to Kolombo. Sijbrands, First Clerk 4827 Report made by the Modliar Ritnesinga, who, by order of the Chief, the Honorable Carl Fredrik Ebell, went to the other side into the country, and returned home sickly, to wit: The informant reports that by order of the aforementioned Honorable Chief he went to the other side, stationed several trusted people at the passes here and there, and also stayed at a place where the highlanders must pass, in order to learn what occurs in the Sinhalese lands, what people came hither out of the Kandian country, and where they wished to go; that the informant had learned from the highlanders that the places Samenelenkalloe, Vlatiekaddeweti, and several others were occupied with 10 to 12 men each, with firearms; that constantly some highlanders from the adjacent post came to Mawiele to learn from the travelers who pass to and fro with their trade what is occurring in the Company's places; also that the informant had learned that the Wannia of Nogerie had betaken himself to another place a few days ago. Furthermore, the said Ritnesinga Modliar reports that he sent two trusted Moors from the Moeselie, named Paijhierpulle and Modelia, to the highlands and commissioned them to betake themselves as far as Kandia with some small merchandise in order to learn what occurs and transpires there; and that these Moors, having gone away, returned again after some days and related to the informant that they had been close to Kandia at the place called Oedoenogere Kaddewete and were detained there by the Kandian people who lay there as guards, without being able to go further or turn back; that thereafter a Mohotiar, who had served with the King and knew the said Moors, came from Kandia to go to his house which was close to the said Oedoenoger Kaddewete

The vidaan araatje of Doenagahapattoe has today notified me of the following assignment of the Kandyan court dignitaries to descend into the korles: The royal prince for the 7 Korles, Kaloekoemake 4847 had made known to the court that he, the declarant, with his wife intended to flee to the Company's territory; That they both, out of fear, fled by night from those lascoreens and arrived in the Hapittigam Korle, where they further presented themselves to the Resident of that Korle and requested protection. That three days thereafter the inhabitants of Warkapolle also arrived, and requested the Resident to deliver him, the declarant, up again, because the court demanded him, the declarant, from their inhabitants at Warkapolle. That they, the declarants, were sent hither by the Resident, and now most humbly request that he may be permitted to reside elsewhere in the Company's territory, and that some means of subsistence may be assigned to him. The second declarant, Poentje Mennike, confirms in all respects what has been declared by the first declarant. Furthermore, the aforementioned two persons, upon my questioning, declared the following: That in the month of January last, two Europeans arrived at the court, who are said to be from Kolombo, who there daily drill in the handling of weapons, from January up to the present, each 100 Sinhalese individuals wearing red uniforms; and to which Europeans each a wife has been assigned. That four months ago now, two other Europeans, who are said to be English, arrived at the adigaar of Oedoegampaha at Matele in the village of Elwelle, and live with that adigaar in his house, and where they also drill some men. That he, the declarant, saw that the cannons at the court were being put in good condition, and also that gunpowder, iron and lead bullets were being manufactured at the court. And that it was being spoken of at the court that the English were on the point of coming to the aid of the Kandyans; and that they would then drive the Dutch from the island and keep the English with them. Today, the 8th of June anno 1791, appeared before me, Ian Barend Bastijn, authorized at this office, in the presence of the after-mentioned witnesses, the Moor and inhabitant of Moeselie, Ablatoenijna oedoemanijna, who, at the requisition of the Opperhoofd, the Honorable Lord Carl Fredrik Ebell, upon the translation of the interpreter Raseendra Modliar, attested and declared to be true and 4863. The Appuhamy Vidane of the provision village of the Lord Governor came on the 7th of June to Attanagalla with the Kangany of one of the new posts that have been established on the borders. They made the report to the Mudaliyar Bandaranayake that a man from the lands of the King passed onto this side without carrying any weapon with him, but that some time afterward he wanted to return to his lands armed with a musket; that the lascars then disarmed him, asking him who had given him this weapon. Having answered that it was people from the Damunupola provision village, he was asked the name of the person, and he told them that it was none of their business to seize it, whereupon he called for help. The opposing post being nearby, about fifteen people then arrived who took him by force and brought him back onto the King's lands with his musket. A man who was sent on the 3rd of June and returned today, the 7th, to Attanagalla, deposed that the Mohottiar of the Three Korales, by whom he is known, being in the aforementioned place, told him in confidence that the King's brother and the second Adigar are to arrive today at Gannoruwa with a numerous retinue, among whom are the Veddas, people who shoot with bows; that the 1st Adigar is also to proceed today to Ruwanwella with all his people. He deposed that the people of Bopitiyagama, having been content to transport their effects a short distance away, had received orders from the Dissava to carry them further away. The same Mohottiar confided to him, he adds, that the intention of the Sinhalese chiefs is to allow the detachments that the Company sent into their land yesterday to advance far ahead so that they can subsequently surround them and cut off their retreat; the new posts of lascars, he said, have been established on the King's lands near the borders of the Siyane Korale. The Mudaliyar Bandaranayake deposed that the lascars of the newly established posts on this side reported to him having heard that as soon as the Adigar Pilima Talauwe arrives at Tombuwana, where he is said to be going with many people, 200 or 300 men will set out to come by night as far as Attanagalla, fire their musket shots there, and then immediately withdraw into Algama; and if it happens that the detachment from Attanagalla pursues them there, they will then be able to surround it and close off all passage for its return.
