4314 Translation of Sinhalese ola letter dated 28 June 1791 to the Honorable Lord Dissave, written by the Mudaliyar Bandarnaike. A spy sent to Ruanwella came to report to me the following: That the troops of the Adigar Pilima Talauwe ralahamy, who were stationed at Ruanwella, departed yesterday, the 27th of this month, for Idelmapane, and that the aforesaid Adigar will also depart thither today, the 28th of this month; and will subsequently go to stay in the rest houses built in the village of Billegelle, where there is also a temple, in order to have a battery constructed in that village. As well as that he will have rest houses built in the village of Tombeliade, and will subsequently go to stay there. That the troops of the Three Korales and Bulatgama, along with Wedikarie Lekam, will remain at Ruanwella. That he, the spy, himself saw the troops of Ruanwella depart for Idelmapane, and learned the rest mentioned above from the inhabitants at Ruanwella. Agrees, First Clerk Wijbrands 4919 Translation of an unsigned Sinhalese ola sent by Aaruegodde, renowned priest and body physician to the King of Kandy, to the Atapattu Mohandiram Christoffel de Saram, with a servant of the aforesaid priest: If they should begin to wage war this time, I assure you that there can be no thought of peace. Therefore, it will be good for us if the matter is settled amicably, and it will be good for both countries. If the requests of both sides should be granted, peace will be made, otherwise not; and if peace should be made apart from that, it will not last. If the friendship and honor of both sides are to be maintained, then, as I think, one of the requests that the chiefs will make must be granted, namely Puttalam alone. And in return, from the requests of the Dutch gentlemen, it will be permitted to peel cinnamon, and all trade in the King's country, as well as all further friendship, will take place as before. If I am to expect an answer to this, it must happen quickly. If that matter is settled, in whatever manner it may be, it will be good; if not, it will look very bad. I subsequently had the bearer of this ola brought before me and questioned him regarding various matters presently circulating in the Kandyan country, but he flatly refused to relate the slightest thing, saying that he was not allowed to speak, as otherwise he would lose his head. However, the aforesaid Mohandiram de Saram testified that the messenger had told him the following upon handing over the ola: That the Second Adigar of the Realm, Erawwawela ralahamy, was in the Matara Dissavony and had trained nearly one thousand men, young people, in the handling of weapons there, who were now drilling well. That at the Court, one thousand men, Sinhalese and Moors, were being drilled by two Tupasses who had come there from Negombo. That powder, lead, iron bullets, and gunstocks were being made at the Court. That there were 35 pieces of large cannon ready at the Court, and that 5 more pieces were being repaired. That he had seen that the First Adigar of the Realm, Pilima Talauwe ralahamy, had arrived with his retinue on this side of Gannoruwa. 4919 Copy The mudaliyar and head of the Kandyan Kolona Korale, commonly called Moddoeanwelle Moedianse, has secretly made known to me through his servant named Wallauwe Wiedaene that he, the mudaliyar, is now very well aware and convinced that as soon as the Dutch gentlemen first make an attack upon the Kandyans and openly become enemies, then all the inhabitants of the Matu... Report of the Moor and inhabitant of the village Mattegodde, Pattena Segoe. By order of the chief of Nigombo and Silau, I went to Kandia, where I learned from my gentleman that it is forbidden at all posts and ferries for any of the Kandyan inhabitants to pass through to the Company's lands with any cattle, poultry, pepper, butter, coffee, or katjang; however, from the Company's territory everything may be brought into the Kandyan area. However, the Kandyan inhabitants are not inclined toward war, saying that in the previous war they lost all their cattle, dwellings, and fields, and if Kandia begins the war, they will abandon all their possessions, which the King may give to whomever he pleases. The King and his brother live in great discord, as the King is also inclined against the war; he said to his brother that as soon as the war with the Dutch begins, he will immediately abdicate his royal realm and enter the priesthood, as he would rather beg than wage war with the Dutch. Thereupon I proceeded further to Wisenawe, where I saw that much paddy was being collected and pounded, and where I also heard that fifty thousand amunams were to be fetched away by pack animals. 4919 Copy The modliaar and head of the Kandyan Kolonna Korale, commonly called Moddoeanwelle Moedianse, has secretly informed me through his servant named Wallauwe Wiedaene that he, the modliaar, is now very well aware and convinced that as soon as the Dutch gentlemen first attack the Kandyans and openly become enemies, all the inhabitants of the Matara dissavony, just as in the previous Sinhalese unrest, having banded together against the Honourable Company, would go to the aid of the Kandyans, which was communicated to him, the modliaar, by his superiors for his information, just as the superiors of Matara and so forth have promised to the said superiors, and also the inhabitants of the Colombo dissavony will act as aforementioned. The Emperor of Kandy is not yet intending to make war against the Honourable Company; but in case the Dutch gentlemen might attack the Emperor directly, then to defend himself and resist, putting the necessary things in readiness; up to now no foreign nations are in Kandy except for some Javanese, however it is said for certain that preparations are being made so that if circumstances require it, a certain nation will come there to the aid of the Kandyans. The said modliaar has also received several olas from the Matara chiefs to forward to the Court grandees, and according to his duty had sent the same to those Court grandees, since he is obliged to do so; among other things, he briefly let it be known that all the loyal chiefs of Matara will be the worst enemies of the Honourable Company, and within a short time that will be fully proven to us, just as in the past Sinhalese unrest they betrayed the Company; and he, the modliaar, has heard many more things from his superiors which he dares not make known to us through his servants, because they serve to the advantage of the Kandyans. A Moor named Mirabelet, second son of Assen a Marequia, who was mentioned in the report of 31 May, arrived at Attanagalla toward noon on 6 June. He declared that he came from Atgam in the Saffragam Corle, where he heard it said that the dissava had given orders to provide the detachment of Meuron that had been sent with all the assistance they might be in a position to furnish him, and not to trouble him at all in his march; that afterward he had retired to a day's journey distance. He adds having heard it said that the intention of the Sinhalese chiefs is to let the various detachments that the Company thinks fit to send there enter as far into the lands of the King as they desire, in order to be able to surround them with a number of natives or at 100 to one when they see them out of reach of receiving any help. Honorable The acting Dessave Berghuis informs me that two participants in the salt lease of the Lewayas, etc. Fort St. George To the Honorable Sir Charles Oakeley, Baronet, Governor and President, as well as the Gentlemen of the Council at Madras. Right Honorable Born Sir and Gentlemen, We have had the honor to receive the letter with which we were favored by Your Honors on the 6th of the past month. It has nowhere appeared to us that His Highness the Nabob of the Carnatic has undertaken anything against our trade and privileges on the Madura and Marawa coasts, and the Company on its part also maintains the treaty mentioned in our previous letter; we therefore do not understand what orders they could be that His Highness is said to have refused to issue in accordance therewith. There are therefore on neither side any reasons, Gentlemen, not to maintain the aforementioned treaty in force and in its full validity. Extract of a letter dated 15 July 1791, written from Galle to Colombo: The acting Dessave Berghuis informs me that two participants in the salt lease of the Lewayas, named Kokgelle Gangewage Simon and Ambenege Andries, have reported that a large number of inhabitants, mostly consisting of Chandoes and washermen, accompanied by Namadde Gasweweaaratchy and Pattetoepane Aaratchy, gave notice to them, the lessees, that the Honorable Company having abandoned the post of Kirinde, this post had been taken into possession by the King of Kandy, and that they, the lessees, must therefore depart from the Lewayas. To this they objected that they could not do so without orders from their superior at Matara, whereupon the said Aaratchies, with much animosity, advised the lessees to leave immediately, for if they did not do so, they would be brought before the Dessave of Saffragam. Whereupon the lessees found themselves compelled to depart. The Honorable Berghuis had a record kept of this report by the said lessees, a copy of which accompanies this letter. The Honorable Berghuis presumes from the above that it is sufficiently evident that the minor headmen and the inhabitants of the Magampattoo, deserting their lords and masters, have defected to the King of Kandy. Palletoepanne aratchi, who made known to them that the Honorable Company had abandoned the post of Kirinde and that the same had been taken into possession on that account by the King of Kandy, and that for that reason they had to depart from the salt pans because the Magampattoe had fallen to the King. To which the declarants replied that they could not depart from there in such a manner, but first had to obtain such an order from their commanders of Mature, whereupon they would regulate themselves accordingly. That the said aratchis thereupon, having advised them with much animosity to depart immediately, additionally threatened that if they did not carry this out immediately, they would be brought bound hand and foot to the dessave of Sappragam, who was then at Maddoeanwielle; that out of fear and because of the many threats that were made there, they abandoned the salt pans and returned hither. After previous compliments. At Tamblewil in the Province of Akkrepattoe, two persons in Brahmin attire, along with two of their servants, have arrived and asked of the inhabitants why the commando or detachment stationed in the Panoase Lands was withdrawn. If the white people are killed, they will nevertheless turn their heads or faces toward the king and die; that there are presently few white people at Naypattemoene; and also that the Company's tithe duty is being gathered with all haste, and that therefore it were best to come down as soon as possible, as it will be well. Finally, the said head of the temple of Kottegore said that the Dessave of Willitje had not enough aid to come down, and even less his brother-in-law the Dessave of Oewach, but that the former had nevertheless written to the latter for assistance, who also promised him to come down to Willitje within 10 to 12 days with the necessary troops; that the Dessave of Willitje had no order to come up to Kandia, but that he is being incited to go to war, especially by the aforesaid 2 to 3 persons, namely to come down quickly; that from Badelegamme two elephants were sent to Kandia to fetch gunpowder and bullets; that an ola was dispatched to the landsvidaan of the Batticaloa Lands, without being able to state, however, whether any reply has been sent back to it or not; that according to order from Kandia, every Dessave must proceed to the harbors formerly occupied by them; that not a soul from the ship's crew had come to the Dessave of Willitje; and that when the Dessave of Oewach should come down, one cannot know what men he will bring with him. At the same time, the Moorish froedar Mierapoelle told me that he had heard from a certain Sandarepoele of Oerlapoelle, named Korteen, that the chief pedie of Akkrepattoe, Lonselia, alone had written an ola to the Dessave of Willitje, which ola was delivered by his uncle Kiedahochien to the vidaan of Oerlapalle for further delivery to the Dessave. I ordered the said Moor Mierapoele to proceed to the fort and there orally report everything mentioned above, whereupon he indicated to me that if he does so, the country chiefs might in time bring him into difficulty. I have therefore judged it necessary to communicate all this to you by this ola. The 1st party having then fired upon the other, the latter executed what had been ordered of them, but having fired in their turn, a part of the 1st party, who had not dropped to the ground, was burned by the flash of the powder which reached them. The Disava, irritated that they had not conformed to these orders, imposed upon them to supply 3 medits of rice per day each, so that, as he told them, not being fit to wage war, they might at least serve to feed the others. All the Sinhalese, he adds, who are under the orders of the Disava, complain that they are cruelly mistreated and say that he thinks more of his own interests than of waging war, having already sent to Kournengal 4 elephants laden with the money he has amassed by his impositions. A second named Ombetiavi hatam Ami, returning from Montinquette near Degammede, has deposed that all that has been specified above relative to the kind of exercise that the Disava of the 7 Corles causes to be executed there is exactly true; but he adds to have heard say among the Kandyans that if the Company restores to them the provinces of Silauw and Putulang, matters will be settled amicably; if not, that they are resolved to destroy the boundaries and enter that country by open force, as well as upon the lands of the [illegible].
