The amount of 326 days of interest on 3145 5/8 Rupees, which on date 10 October 1788, by the payment into cash of 6063 1/16 Rupees in settlement of the account of the merchant Laaldas Herrijdas concerning the clove spices brought here in the year 1786/7 by the Company ship De Geregtigheid, were overpaid, caused by an underweight found to be greater than calculated by as much as 898 3/4 pounds, for which his account in the books of the year 1787/8, folio 117, has been credited to Three Diverse Accounts with 3145 5/8 Rupees, he being further credited for the interest on the surplus or overpaid 3145 5/8 Rupees brought into cash, calculated from and including 10 October 1788 up to and including the last of August of the year 1789 at three quarters percent per month: f 307:13:-. Your Honors' highly esteemed approval, while we shall dismiss these sepoys again as soon as the linens have been dispatched. The Purveyor and Dispenser informed us in a report recorded in the resolution of 9 November last, indicating that they could not procure the rice and peas for less than 34½ lb for 4 rupees for the former, and 34½ lb for 13½ rupees for the latter. We were obliged to grant him these prices, as they closely correspond to those of the market. We shall by no means fail, in accordance with Your Honors' order contained in the letter of 3 November 1789, to send the infected and unsaleable nutmegs to the Netherlands in a separate chest, with the contents described and noted on the invoice. We very urgently request that we may be permitted to rectify paragraph 149 of our respectful letter to Your Honors of 19 December 1789, presenting to Your Honors that when we stated therein that we could not make use here of the plan regarding the dispatch of private letters, we meant that we could not make use of the packet boats dispatched from Ceylon to the Netherlands on 5 May and 5 October each year to send any papers or letters there. For we almost never have any opportunity to make any dispatch directly from here to Ceylon, and even then never except by foreign vessels, on whose departure and voyages very little reliance can be placed, being obliged to send our letters to some good friend in Bombay, where they must lie until an opportunity to Cochin arises, and where they must wait again until there is an occasion to Ceylon, whereby they are commonly three to four, yes, sometimes eight months en route from here to Ceylon and vice versa, while this mode of dispatch is practically impossible in March and April, and completely impossible in August and September. This arrangement is recorded in our resolution of the aforementioned date, and we take the liberty to refer to it here, only noting in a word that the amount of the postage, credited to Batavia up to the last day of August past, amounts to ƒ 11:13:8. Regarding Broach, by resolution of 11 May last, we caused the annual gift amounting to ƒ 496:1:8 to be delivered to the Pandit or Governor ad interim there. The friendly conduct that the aforementioned Pandit had always shown toward us inclined us to the assumption that it might well be possible that the present English Resident there, out of fear, would permit the Company the continued enjoyment of its privileges regarding free export. However, when we sent our vessels there at the end of October to collect the linens and cotton yarns prepared there by the suppliers, the same Pandit saw fit, after having first permitted the goods to be stamped with chops and shipped into small craft, to prevent their transport under the pretext that his master Raw Scindia Bahadur, at the time Broach was ceded to him by the English government, had allegedly bound himself never to grant any freedom to carry on trade there to the Dutch and other nations.

To the Right Honourable Gentleman people here to take into service on their ships, this engagement is commonly for three years after which time they are brought back again and discharged, and the same takes place in Bengal without Your Honour's government having wished to cause any hindrance thereto.
