For the rest, having made no particular discoveries during the voyage nor had any particular encounters, save only both before the Cape and after departure from there our hard bread was found to be bad and moldy, and likewise the peas spoiled, the principal reasons for this being in our opinion: firstly, the long lying in the roads of Texel waiting for a good wind before we could put to sea, and the long voyage that followed thereupon both to the Cape and to this place; secondly, the strong heating in the hold caused by the exhalations of the loaded masts and other goods. Copy 210,5 We, the undersigned senior and junior officers appointed to the Honourable East India Company's ship Christophorus Colombus, declare at the requisition of Sea Captain Jan Janze Louridsz, commanding the said vessel: That during the voyage with the said vessel from the Netherlands to the Cape of Good Hope, and from there to the government here, the entire crew was duly and in timely fashion supplied with their rations according to the muster roll, all in accordance with the order and instructions of the Honourable Directors of the East India Company established for that purpose; as well as supplied to the sick everything that could serve for the restoration of their health and refreshment and that was required and approved by the chief surgeon; and whereas, due to the lengthy voyage both from the Netherlands and from False Bay, various provisions and drinks were at last already consumed, and the same were most urgently needed for the recovery of the scorbutic and other sick persons, it was, following a decision of the ship's council, supplied by Captain Louridsz from his private stock: everything that could serve for the well-being of the sick and the preservation of the crew's health and was requested by the chief surgeon; thus, throughout the entire voyage, according to the circumstances of the time and whenever necessary, the entire crew was properly provided with extra drinks, provisions, and refreshments; proper purification and cleaning was carried out in the tween decks as well as throughout the whole ship in due time and weather permitting, as well as fumigation with gunpowder and juniper branches, sprinkling with vinegar, the use of the air pump, and keeping the hatches and gunports open as much as the weather and wind permitted; and furthermore, everything that could in any way, according to our judgment, contribute to the preservation of the sick entrusted to us was performed and caused to be performed by us and our subordinates; and because the great number of the sick, as well as the well-founded fear of further consequences thereof—for the reason that during that time we were delayed in our voyage by continuous contrary winds and opposing currents—caused us to decide in the ship's council to satisfy the demands of the chief surgeon concerning the sick as far as lay in our power; and as this could not be done because, by reason of the long voyage, most had already been consumed, other than by having the Captain furnish provisions and drinks from his private stock, as appears from the annexed declaration of the chief surgeon Christiaan Behne, also serving on the said vessel. Christophorus Columbus, who together and each separately declared it to be true: That upon the inspection carried out on the said vessel as well as on its rigging by express commissioners here, the following defects and necessities were discovered, which need to be provided for as detailed below, namely: That the following ought to be made and repaired, namely: Three new studding sail booms A new rim for the maintop on the port side A ditto forehatch instead of the unfit one To repair the galley hatch New gratings in the beakhead A ditto stanchion in the hold A ditto topsail halyard bitt A ditto ladder for the quarterdeck New railings for the waistboards Two ditto gangplanks To provide for the shot rack on the port side A ringbolt for one of the gun ports To unhang the rudder, provide it with new pintles, and attach one of the irons To open the bellows and provide them with stiff wire To also provide for the master seams aft To repair the gratings of the main hatch Three bulkheads in the tweendecks A sail locker and cajang poles A water bulkhead in the hold A new ditto stanchion That the said vessel, inside as well as outside, needs to be caulked, and the further defects that may appear in the hold and during the caulking are to be remedied. Also that his provisions on the voyage were very good and well-conditioned, except for one barrel of meat that was spoiled and unusable, the cause of which, in my opinion, is to be attributed to the fact that we received the said barrel of meat at the Cape, where the salt is not as good for salting as in Europe.
