As we had the honor to see an extract from the Malacca letter arrive before us, from which, as Your Right Honorable Lordships are pleased to remark, it appears that the lesser profit yielded on the elephant tusks is not to be attributed to a higher valuation from there, we shall with due respect merely submit on that matter: that the cause of this loss of profit is not to be sought here either, for since the years 1758 we have obtained r 120:-:- or f 193:-:- for the 120 3/4 lb. Since Your Right Honorable Lordships have been pleased to authorize us to remit the previous year's price, and in case no price increase could be obtained for the taffachelasses, to send that textile back to the capital, we would not have ventured to sell the same for the previous year's price, as after all vainly expended efforts no more money could be obtained for it, had we not been compelled thereto by the delay of the cotton yarns, the coral beads and astronomical instruments remaining unsold, and the resulting fear of running short of money to purchase the demanded goods, as appears in our resolution of 17 October. We request Your Right Honorable Lordships to overlook our actions in this regard, and, in accordance with the threats and promises made to the Japanese, not to send that linen for several years, except upon the demand of the Emperor, as we otherwise despair of ever succeeding to satisfaction; and then to endeavor to adjust the price fairly for subsequent consignments as Your Right Honorable Lordships desire. We hope to obtain a similar approval for our having sent the coral beads back to the capital, since we were once again offered a pittance for the 60 coral beads brought over and a higher price was roundly refused on 17 October, as appears from the resolutions and daily register of that day, the more so as they also wished to accept these in the court gifts for no higher than p 230:- or f 379:10:-.
