Furthermore, regarding the Ceylon cloths, we have taken this resolution and authorized you, after the last-received coarse raw Salempores have been sold out, to sell such other sorts of coarse raw Guineas as you still have remaining from previous consignments. That you should candidly inform us as soon as possible whether you think, barring unexpected occurrences, in the present situation where the highlander has become fairly well accustomed to the Salempores, that you can sell a quantity of no less than 20 packs of coarse bleached in this financial year, if we permit the sale of coarse bleached Ceylon Guineas alongside it, in such a manner that you direct the demand so that approximately an equal quantity of coarse bleached Salempores and coarse bleached Ceylon Guineas can be sold; If you assume you can effect this, we shall permit you, starting the first of December next, to sell both coarse bleached Ceylon Guineas and the said Salempores. In case, however, you think that any hindrance in the sale of coarse bleached Salempores might result from this, then this project must not yet take effect, but the sale of coarse bleached Salempores must continue until further notice. Subsequently present them to the merchants, listen to their judgment thereof as well as the prices they are willing to offer, and send word concerning this hither as soon as possible, so that through the delay herein the Company may suffer no disadvantage. Furthermore, regarding the Ceylon cloth we have taken a decision and authorized you, after the received rough unbleached Salampores are sold out, to sell such other sorts of rough unbleached Guinees as still remain with you from previous shipments. Recommending our persons to your attention on the 21st of this month, of which the original, together with the attached gold, is on the ship D' Eenparigheijd, which has not yet arrived here today. In reply to your report regarding the examination made of the linens received with the said vessel from Batavia, it serves that since you have found the same to be of the same sort as those you received by previous ships, we, in the hope that we shall obtain Their Right Honourables' approval for this, authorize you to relinquish the same for the old prices offered for them by the merchants, while at the same time the sale of the salempoeris shall be continued and that of the Ceylonese Guineeses shall remain suspended for now. Since the trade books of Poulo Chinco for the years 1787 and 1788 were sent to Batavia in the past year to be forwarded to Europe, and we therefore have none of them here, yet must fulfill some requirements of Their Right Honourables with the ship, you are ordered to send the same here by express immediately upon receipt of this letter. With the tambangan, you will promptly receive the pack of neckcloths, and we shall write further with the same. Ending. Padang, the 1st of December 1790. To the same as before! Because the men cannot be discharged, the distribution of good months may remain postponed until the usual time. We can hardly believe that they will have said that they delivered a batch of 10000 lb hoop iron here; this is too large a volume for it to be handed over so unnoticed. And as you have already been instructed in writing not to heed what the ship's crew had to say, you could have first requested orders in this matter. It is true that our letter of 18 November last dictated that we would allow the sale of rough bleached Ceylonese Guinees if you thought you could dispose of not less than a consignment of 20 packs of rough bleached Salempoeris alongside it in this current financial year; however, your reply by letter of 21 November stated that in this current financial year an equal number of packs of rough bleached Salempoeris and raw Ceylonese could be disposed of as was done in the previous year, provided it pleased us to withhold the sale of the Guinees further until the remaining Salempoeris were sold. And this remark brought to our attention by you, concurring with the advice of the merchants here which we have also gathered on the matter, led us to take the resolution not to sell any Guinees before the Salempoeris of each sort on this Coast were sold out; and this resolution thus remains fixed as such, especially since there are no reasons to make a change, because those cloths currently leave the warehouses very quickly both here and at Poulo Chinco, and one could very easily expose oneself, if one wished to make a change now, to being left unnecessarily sitting in the warehouses with a remainder of some packs, which, barring unexpected accidents, can be avoided in the present course of trade. I find myself compelled very humbly to request Your Honorable Worships to send me, by a pantjallang for the continuation of the Honorable Company's trade, the linens and long flat iron listed on the attached demand, or, if there should be no opportunity for this, to permit me for the time being to dispose of the bleached and unbleached Ceylon guinees still on hand. Furthermore, enclosed herewith for Your Honor's inspection is a copy of the cargo manifest for Poulo Chinco. From both it appears that, upon the excuse of the bleached salempores and raw Ceylons, a favorable view was taken by Their High Excellencies. I therefore take the liberty very humbly to request Your Honor's directions concerning the sale of the textiles still remaining in stock and those now brought in, all the more because, in the absence of an invoice, no price current can be drawn up for them. Raw Ceylon, it is very likely that, barring unforeseen occurrences that prevent the arrival of the Highlanders, an equal number of packs of Salempores, bleached and raw, could be turned over in this financial year, should it please Your Right Honorable to suspend the sale of the guinees still further or until such time as the Salempores remaining in stock have been sold. At present, there remain in stock here of those last-mentioned types of cloth 17 1/2 packs of bleached and 9 packs of raw, and I shall not fail to inform Your Right Honorable at the earliest opportunity should they find any demand, and in that case request permission to obtain a new relief shipment by the tambanger. Several of the Highlanders situated to the south having already asked for red checkered roemaals, I take the liberty, pursuant to the permission granted to me for this purpose, to request a pack of those cloths, for the collection of which I am now sending the tambanger over. I shall furthermore take care that all the required trade documents are in readiness against the New Year. Having found an opportunity on the 25th of the recently passed month of August to provide the garrison of that frontier post, according to custom, with four months of subsistence money and rations by a native vessel departing from here for Pasar Radja, I availed myself of it all the sooner since it could be done without incurring any expense; but this vessel, on the night of the 26th following, was driven onto the beach and wrecked between Saranta and Strantie by a violent squall from the west, and in this disaster the following were entirely lost: 800 lb Rice 60 K: Aracq Api 68 lb Salt 12 K: Lamp Oil This loss having been impossible for the carriers to prevent, as shown by the accompanying declaration, I very humbly request to be permitted to write off the cost of the aforementioned provisions to profit and loss in the trade ledgers of this office, and that furthermore the account of the soldier Michiel Le Perrin of St. Malo, who died here on the 31st of October without a will or estate, be debited for the advanced burial expenses of Rd:s 5:—, and that the garrison here be once again completed with another European soldier. To the same as before Number Herewith I have the honor to present to Your Right Honorable the formal and provisional requisition for the office of Poulo Chinco for the years 1792 and 1792/3, to which is attached a memorandum of the merchandise remaining here as balance dated 20 December last, indicating the profits they yield, alongside several other papers requested by Your Right Honorable and further specified in the register; humbly requesting that the aforementioned requisition, after review, may be dispatched to Their High Mightinesses with the ship d'Eenpaerigheijd accompanied by favorable recommendations. Right Honorable Sir, Honorable Sir, No. 13 Having had the honor the evening before yesterday of duly receiving Your Right Honorable's respected letter of the 12th of this month, together with the invoice and bill of lading of what was brought for this office by the ship d' Eenparigheijd, I have, in accordance with Your Right Honorable's highly esteemed order, drawn up from it as promptly as possible a price current of the received linens and an inventory of everything that was delivered here. Both of which I have the honor to offer enclosed herein to Your Right Honorable, being further accompanied by an invoice of account of such twelve packages of guinea linens coarse bleached, 19301 lb of assorted Ceylon iron, 110000 lb of hoop iron, and 400 lb of lock plates, amounting together to f 6779: 3:— which were charged to this office on the Batavia invoice, but according to the ship's officers were delivered at Padang; and we very humbly request that the aforementioned twelve packages of guinea linens coarse bleached may be sent here at the earliest opportunity, since they are destined for the office of Poulo Chinco. Pursuant to my last letter of the 21st of this month, the ship d' Eenparigheijd [illegible] the following morning its return voyage from here to the capital of the Indies, Batavia. To the same as before. No. 14 Given the little time granted to me to fulfill that which was ordered of us in Your Right Honorable's highly esteemed dispatch received here today, dated the 17th of this month, I must let this serve solely to accompany the ordered invoice of the return account of such ironworks as were charged to the Poulo Chinco office at f 3154: 1:— according to the invoice and bill of lading dated Batavia in the Castle, 27 September 1790, per the ship d' Eenparigheijd, but which ironworks were not requisitioned from here and were also not delivered or received. The carpenter sent from Padang, who is now returning, having only today finished his work on the ship d' Eenparigheijd, this vessel is to undertake its return voyage to Batavia tomorrow. having pursued further blessings upon Your Right Excellencies, His most honored Family, and the precious interests of the Company, that vessel passed out of sight of this Island on that very same day with a westerly wind. As appears from the attached copies of the Invoice, Bill of Lading, weighing declaration, and covering letter sent to Her Right Excellencies with the same, all available products were dispatched from here to the Capital of the Indies by the aforementioned ship, consisting of 90000. lb sifted black Pepper costing with its packing ƒ 11114: 3: 8. and 9850. lb Sappanwood amounting to ƒ 234:—. Furthermore, this is accompanied by the completed Invoice of the merchandise and diverse goods brought in by the aforementioned vessel for this Office, and an Invoice of Charging for twelve Packs of coarse bleached Ceylon Guinees, which were charged to the Poulo Chinco Office, but delivered at cost; for which reason, in a recently sent requisition, a request was made for their return at an opportune time. Finally, there is also attached hereto a Muster Roll of such European Military personnel stationed here who very humbly request Your Right Honorable to be allowed to enjoy, as of the last day of this month, a half-yearly allowance on account of their earned monthly wages. Right Honorable Sir, Pursuant to what was written in Your Right Honorable's highly esteemed letter of the 14th of this month, I shall without neglect maintain the Sultan of Indrapoura through further friendly correspondence on that good path which he now seems to have taken again; furthermore, Your Right Honorable's letter to the said Sultan has already been dispatched to him. Herewith I have the honor to present to Your Right Honorable the return of such merchandise which, during the last six months, or since the first of September 1790 until the last of February last, have been brought in and sold at this Office against Gold and Cash, from which it will please Your Right Honorable to see that on the purchase amount thereof, to the sum of ƒ 15595: 12:—, profits were made of ƒ 9559: 13: 8, or 61 3/10 percent. It having appeared to me from Your Honorable Sir's respected letter of the last of the previous month that Your Honorable Sir had taken the resolution not to sell any coarse bleached Ceylonese Guinees until the coarse bleached Salempouris remaining in balance on this Coast were sold out, I shall dutifully govern myself accordingly; and as I was also ordered therein to requisition another parcel of those last-mentioned linens again as soon as it shall be necessary, I now consequently dispatch the cargo proa from here to the Coast, humbly requesting to receive therewith 6 to 10, or otherwise as many packs of coarse bleached Ceylonese Salempouris as this vessel will be able to bring over, as there are today only four packs remaining here in balance. Right Honorable Sir No 19/ apart Having long ago instructed the Corporal stationed at the post at Adjarhadja to send me a sincere and accurate report of the present condition of the district of Indrapoura, he informed me in a recently received letter that, having made inquiries there, he had found that since the troubles caused by the Young Sultan of Moco Moco most inhabitants had deserted the country, and a large portion of them currently resided within the territory of Moco Moco, whom the English Resident would not allow to return; wherefore the Sultan of Indrapoura very humbly insisted on receiving the favorable assistance of Your Honorable Sir so that his subjects who fled during the aforementioned occasion might return again. Conclusion. To the Right Honorable Sir, Christiaan Hendrik von Erath, Merchant and Commander over Sumatra's West Coast. As shown by the recently dispatched half-yearly sales report from the first of September last, the 30 pieces of double plain red armozeens that were still running in balance having already been sold out, and nothing of those silk cloths having been brought with the ship d' Eenpaerigheijd upon my previous year's requisition, I am not in a position to fulfill the recently made requisition of four pieces of those silk cloths.
