Yet, since in this account there still remain charges of which no mention has yet been made, and which nevertheless are real expenses originally arising from the holding of the possession here, I now also proceed to examine them, so as to be able to judge soundly concerning everything and to make a calculation, both as to the amount at which they ought to be set, and also to find the funds that must cover them. Assuming that, in the commerce as it is projected in this document, one will be able to manage for a transport ship with a vessel of around 300 lasts, the maintenance of which I estimate—provided each keeps a proper frugality well in view in his own department, so that the Coast is not burdened by foreign accidents and occurrences over which it has no direction—can be set at around ƒ 2500:— or a fraction more per month; and as such a ship ordinarily requires the time of 5 months for this employment, one can set for its funding ƒ 12500:—:— On the general assessment of the Company here, which in this matter can be reduced to ƒ 300000:—, calculated at 3 percent per year: ƒ 9000:—:— The wages that are presently paid out in Europe amount to: ƒ 5842: 10:— So that these charges amount to ƒ 27342: 10:— Now, to find these, one must examine in what light one views the products of these coasts, primarily the pepper cultivation. What kind of profits 571028 lb of that grain, which this coast has delivered in that time, has yielded! I do not at all wish to argue that the high price of 27 groats might not have decreased in all that time, yet it seems to me that I can at least rightly claim for this coast that the first remittances of the years 1785/6 and 1786/7 to the amount of 198200 lb participated in the sale of 27 groats per pound. And since this might be contradicted, what then were the profits that a small capital of ƒ 25043„14„ 8„ in purchase costs let flow into the lap of the Company from its bosom? One will find that the sale achieved ƒ 133785„— and left behind a sweet fragrance of well over one and one-twelfth ton of guilders. Does not such an important profit on such a small capital deserve some notice? Would one dare to say that it is not sufficient to compensate for all the disadvantages that the first two financial years had to their charge, and can one with reasonableness leave these profits unobserved out of sight, even though they are accidental; and do they, just as accidental impediments cause burdens, not also serve to be accepted again as accidental profits for relief? Yet the fourth and fifth financial years, I dare assure, have through trade yielded more than the expenses incurred here, and when one adds again the remittance of pepper in those two years to the amount of 221743 lb, then I do not doubt in any way whether the coast has, in the course of 5 financial years, brought the Company any real benefit. Section 348. In that manner, not doubting whether the first two financial years themselves, despite the small stock of merchandise which naturally had to be disadvantageous, yet in Europe amply compensated what was lost here. Thus certainly the remittance of 151085 lb of pepper sent from here in the third financial year, notwithstanding the selling price might even then already have been noticeably reduced, still certainly yielded an important capital to compensate for the poor performance in the trade that I have described to Your Right Noblenesses for that financial year.
