Checked Rigging and repair of this No. 65 is respectfully to set forth the reasons herewith. First, the bark the Chinsura arrived in the financial year 1788/89 from Bengal at Trincomalee and from there was dispatched hither, which, having been destitute of various necessities, received the required carpentering and provisions here in the financial year 1789/90. Secondly, the sloop the Kreeft arrived in the month of March of the financial year 1789/90 from Batavia and participated for half of the provisions made in this financial year. Lastly, in the financial year 1789/90, a craft was fitted out here with its rigging, taking the first from total unfitness and dismantled, whereby an increase was also caused. The undersigned can therefore impossibly understand that the expenses of this account could have been increased by his actions, and as far as the carpentering on the vessels is concerned, although it does not belong to his administration, he nevertheless, as far as his ability and knowledge permit, pays close attention that only the necessary work is done to the vessels. Now, as far as the department of the undersigned is concerned, namely the provision of equipage goods, he can assure Your Right Honourable in all good conscience that nothing has been done beyond the highest necessity and contrary to the regulations, which if necessary can be verified for all provisions. Meanwhile, it would be far more advantageous for the Honourable Company if only single-masted sloops were designated for this government, as he argued at length in his humble address of 1 March 1786, to which he respectfully refers. The remaining part of the same, for a length of 27: rods, having been too low and wide, was heightened by one foot and narrowed by 12: rods in order to bring the said dam to one and the same height and width: this has now been done and the same revetted with sods, except the place where the coal shed stands, which I have not been able to let narrow because the said coal shed would then have to be removed out of the way and one would be at a loss here, as beforehand another coal shed on a suitable place ought to be built. The sod works of the glacis and covered way in front of the bastions Rotterdam and Middelburg have been repaired and well provided, and likewise the ramparts and walls of the fortress have been cleaned from time to time. The ramparts, walls, merlons, banquettes, stairs, appareils etc. of Amsterdam and a part of the curtain between the said bastion and den Briel have been roughcast and repaired; as soon as the other works allow, this will be further continued. At Jaffenapatnam, at the battery extending from the gate on the left hand on the side of the moat, the walls have been raised up to the cordon and 31. rods long around with 7. counterforts of 5: feet thick; the vaulting towards the covered way bricked up and completed. The embrasures divided, a part of the inner wall for the breastwork for a length of 66: feet and four feet high, as well as the walls on the right hand of the battery towards the sea around 20 rods and 5½ feet, have been further raised, and the vaulting of the gate and the powder magazine towards the sea side.
