Since the Governor of Brootchia has once again allowed the Company's cloth suppliers to enjoy the old privileges of the Company concerning the tolls, etc., during the completed supply and export of the cloths from there for the past year, notwithstanding the opposition which he initially made, as appears from what was noted in the Resolution of the 2nd of November of the past year, it was approved to send to the same Governor, in recompense according to this office's old obligation, the usual annual gift amounting presently, according to the following project, to ƒ 141:9:-, being ƒ 25:8:8 less than was presented in the past year. After resumption and approval of the last preceding Resolution, it was noted: That on the 8th of March last, the person of Johan Mathijse of Nagapatnam was engaged into the service of the Noble Company as a sailor at ƒ 12:-:- per month and under the usual contract. And that pursuant to what was resolved on the 11th of March last, the sailors who served on the vessels during the good monsoon were discharged on the ultimate of that month, retaining only the crew absolutely required on the same in the monsoon. After which the Director submitted the specification presented to him by the Master of the Equippage of such expenses and necessary supplies as have been made by the same during this book year, according to the resolution of this assembly of the 19th of July of the past year, to the vessels belonging here, the narrow ship de Batavier, the horrij with a 4-mast ship rigging de Charlotta, and the country boat, of the following contents. 54: The 2nd of April, Anno 1741. expert carpenters with us proceeded to the large palisade outside the northeast gate of the Company's wharf, and after a careful examination found that almost all the outer planks along a length of 48 feet were eaten through by the worm, and that the inner planks are completely rotted and decayed, thus requiring a speedy repair, which according to the opinion of the carpenters must be done by placing a sheet piling wall, just as had to be done to the other part of the same palisade in Anno 1789, which had an exceptionally good result, considering that the outer planks are so rotted and the piles are so eaten through by the worms that they cannot support or withstand the earth resting against them, and that it is not possible to nail new planks under water where the piles are, even if they were sufficient for it. Subsequently we proceeded to the dwelling house of the Honorable Secunde and Head Administrator Monte, and there, in the presence of the said mody, surveyed the ceiling under the gips of the entire small middle hall, and found that those beams on which that gips rests are eaten through by the worms, just as was also found in Anno 1788 regarding the beams in the front gallery, and that they therefore ought to be remedied immediately and replaced by other beams in order to prevent greater expenses in time; further, the mody told us that by placing 46 small beams or rafters of between 5½ to 6 inches wide and 1½ inches thick between the openings where the decayed wood is constantly scraped away, the said hall can be repaired again. Wherewith we have the honor to be, with all respect, below stood, Right Honorable Sir, lower, Your Right Honorable's humble and obedient servants, was signed, G:t Pipers and G: C: Roeff, in the margin, Souratta the 2nd of April Anno 1791. And whereas it appears therefrom regarding the aforementioned palisade or bulwark that almost all the outer planks thereof, beginning with the end of the sheet piling wall that was placed for the other part of this same palisade, according to the Resolution of this assembly of the 24th of March 1788, upwards to a length of 48 feet, are completely eaten through by the worms, and the inner planks are rotted and decayed, and therefore require a speedy repair, and regarding the house of the Head Administrator, that 55: The 2nd of April Anno 1791. that the beams and ceiling on which the gips of the entire small middle hall rests are completely decayed and rotted away, and likewise need to be remedied; it was approved and understood to have the aforementioned defect on the aforementioned bulwark repaired and restored by continuing and placing a sheet piling wall to that which was placed there in 1788, according to the Resolution of the 28th of March mentioned above, to the length of 48 feet, whereby that entire palisade will then be provided with a new row of piles worked into one as a sheet piling wall in front and will be in a state to turn away the river currents for many years to come and to save the Company from the expenditure of a considerable sum, which otherwise would be required for the construction of a stone wall, at least barring any unforeseen and rarely occurring heavy floods; and to also have the gips in the small middle hall of the house of the Head Administrator repaired by placing 46 small beams or rafters, 5½ to 6 inches wide and 1½ inches thick, between the openings of the rotted and scraped-away small beams, in the same manner as was done with another part of the same house, according to the Resolution of this assembly of the 20th of October 56: The 2nd of April Anno 1791. to contract out to the lowest bidder and to have carried out. Subsequently, we have seen in the dwelling house of the Honorable Second and Head Administrator Monte that the small center hall has been repaired according to the order by the inserting of 46 small beams. We have also, upon examination, further perceived that the bamboo revetment below the palisade at the southwest weir has been broken to pieces by the washing away of the water, and thus likewise requires a speedy repair. In the hope that the commission entrusted to us has been accomplished to satisfaction, we have the honor to be with high esteem. Below stood: Honorable Respected Lord. Having been submitted a report from the Honorable Head Administrator 81: The 28th September Anno 1791. merchandise disposed of thereon in the margin. Marginal dispositions taken in the Council of Policy at Surat Wednesday the 28th September Anno 1791. After date, the judicial commissioners who assisted at the receipt, further handlings, and delivery of the alongside-mentioned nutmegs and mace having taken the oath in due form before the Council of Justice of this Direction for their faithful handling thereof, it is approved to write off to the debit of the profit account in the books of the year 1790/1791 the deficiencies found: 69¾ lb or 2 7/16 per cent of nutmegs and 11:– lb or 1 13/32 per cent of mace. Administrator drawn up: from a memorandum of the Warehouse Keeper of the merchandise weighed out in the past financial year 1790/1791, it is approved and resolved to dispose thereon as set down in the margin of that document and thus to insert the same here. To the Right Honorable Worshipful Abraham Josias Sluijsken Director and Commander in Chief of this Direction Together with The Council Right Honorable Worshipful Sir Gentlemen. Suratta Having deliberated upon a missive received this morning from the Gentlemen Ceylon ministers, dated the 21st July last, of the following content: To the Honorable Mr. Abraham Josias Sluijsken, Director of the Company's trade and establishment, together with the Council there. Honorable, highly esteemed, valiant, wise, prudent, very discreet Sir and Friends, Upon your Honors' request by missive of the 19th February last, we gave the commission to the Honorable Fiscal Vollenhove to persuade Bouwmandje Mandchergie to proceed thither; whereupon the said Honorable Fiscal submitted a report accompanied by a petition from the aforementioned Bouwmandje Mandchergie, wherein the latter states that he has given full power and authority to his brother, who is in Suratta, to attend to and settle his affairs, and that it is therefore not necessary for him to travel to Suratta in person; and as regards the Company's claim upon his adoptive father and the also deceased broker Gouwenram Roederam, he states that this claim, after deduction of two paid sums indicated in the aforesaid petition, currently amounts to only Ropias 37661: 7, and requests that there may serve in reduction thereof a certain remaining debt mentioned in his aforesaid petition, amounting to Ropias 13312: 16, for which he has handed over the bond to us, and further Ropias 3264: 15, which have been collected from the Banyan merchant Kissamdas Kissendat, making together Ropias 16577: 1. After deduction of this sum, the debt of the aforesaid brokers would amount to only Ropias 21084: 6, of which he offers to count the half, or Ropias 10542: 3, for the share of his aforementioned adoptive father, into the Company's treasury here; he further requests in the said petition that the attachment placed by the Director Mr. Sluijsken upon what the Turkish merchant Salee Tjellebie owes to his father may be lifted, so that his brother can receive this money to satisfy his creditors, and which request
