The deponent, just hearing the church bell strike, noticed on the stoep in front of the door of the Fire Master Ian Casper Loos two black boys, and on the flat roof toward the front side also two boys, with another one dressed in a smock joining them shortly thereafter, whom the deponent recognized as the slave of the sworn Clerk at the Orphan Chamber Monsieur Johannes Blanckenberg, named Baatjoe. That the deponent thereafter woke the female slave Candasa and made this known to her, but that she initially did not want to get up, yet having gotten up upon the frequent calling of the deponent, she as well as the deponent, because it was somewhat obscure moonlight due to the overcast sky, saw some goods being thrown down from one of the upper windows by one of those two boys who had at first also been on the flat roof of the house; while precisely at that moment only one boy was located with a rope at the edge of the molding of the flat roof, about which, wishing to inform his master, the deponent went down the stairs in order to see if it were possible to open the door, which however was in vain, so that the deponent, hindered in the morning by his labor, nonetheless in the afternoon revealed to his master what he had discovered. That the deponent, having gone the second day thereafter to his priest, named Vorman, had pretended to him that he was a slave of the aforementioned Loos, since the deponent's mother resided with him, and that she as well as all the other slaves were accused of the theft committed at the aforementioned Loos, and that he, the deponent, requested him to please say where the stolen goods had been taken; the aforementioned Vorman first made him, the deponent, swear according to their customs not to give any light about this to any person, and thereafter told him, the deponent, that the goods had been taken to the burgher Ian George Meijer. Declaring nothing further, the deponent gives as reasons of his knowledge as testified in the text, that the same is the pure truth. Jurgensen, court messenger, stating that the appearer was required to appear before the requisitioning gentleman with the very first opportunity. Interrogatory articles drafted and submitted to the Gentlemen Commissioners from the Honorable Worshipful Council of Justice of this government, in order that the burgher Johan George Meijer, currently the Lord's prisoner, may be heard thereon at the requisition of the Independent Fiscal, Mr. Jan Jacob Serrurier; his responses to be given shall be properly recorded in the margin hereof. To present the inventory to the prisoner and to ask him piece by piece from whom and from where he obtained the goods listed therein, as well as in what manner and for how much. Answers: that he bought some pieces of ticking and during the summer striped fabric from Baatjoe, together with one or two pieces of haircloth, believing that at that time two boys were with each other, being unable to state any longer how much he paid to the boys for it; all the ticking that is at his house having been bought by him from those boys; that he also bought the defective ringkrang, Dutch linen, shirts, stockings, and razors from the same two boys, believing that there was also a piece of fine batik, as well as a silver clasp, and simple jackets among them; having also bought, according to estimate, five, six, and seven rolls of sailcloth from the aforesaid boys, without being able to state with more truth how much, having paid 12 Rds for each roll; all those goods having been brought by Baatjoe, a slave of the Assistant Van der Riet, and by the Chinese Oensien; but that the Chinese had only been present at the delivery of the sailcloth; that he bought the eight porcelain spittoons from Baatjoe, the boy of the aforesaid Van der Riet named Fortuijn, and another tall boy who is unknown to the prisoner, not knowing any longer how much he paid for them. The prisoner also bought a bag of incense from Baatjoe alone. That when Baatjoe came to the prisoner the first time, he had brought him some files, this being now well over a year ago, having brought them to him by day, and some small trifles at one time or another without being able to name them. Declaring further to have heard several times of committed thefts, but that none of the goods stolen there were brought to his house. Whether the prisoner is now inclined to state purely and truthfully concerning all the goods that were found at his house today, according to the inventory that was drawn up thereof on the 15th of this month before the Gentlemen Commissioners from the Honorable Worshipful Council of Justice, from whom, for how much, and in what manner he obtained them. Whether the prisoner must not confess that he has harbored a multitude of stolen goods at his house besides those which he stated as such in his previous interrogation on the 14th of this month. [illegible] handed over to the Honorable Court of Justice of this government aforesaid, in order to be heard there upon the requisition of the Independent Fiscal Mr. Jan Jacob Ter [illegible] the burgher Johan Georg Meijer, currently the Lord's prisoner, whose responses to be given shall be duly noted in the margin of this document. Article 1 Whether he, the prisoner, did not buy in the month of April of the past year 6 pieces of bleached Fatherland sheet linen, 20 to 25 fine hats, and 2 pieces of carsaye, which he, the prisoner, knew to be stolen, for how much and from whom he had bought that? Answers: that he does not know anything more at present as to for how much, but admits that he bought the aforesaid goods from the slaves Baatjoe, Fortuijn, and two others who have slipped his memory. in one of the front rooms of his dwelling house, where the thieves, having pulled off a coup elsewhere, were accustomed to knock at the window at night, thus waking him, whereafter the prisoner, opening the house, the mutual trade was then conducted. — that the prisoner thus, among others, from the slaves Baatjoe and Fortuijn, from time to time bought and also immediately paid in cash for several pieces of drill, striped Haarlem cloth, durant, a defective gorget that was stolen from an officer of the regiment of Swiss, along with and besides some clothing, domestic linen, shirts, stockings, razors, and furthermore five or more rolls of silk cloth, eight porcelain spittoons, armozeen, kersey, hats, some pieces of Dutch linen, bedsheets and what more, all of which goods the aforesaid slaves Baatjoe and Fortuijn with their comrades had successively stolen by night from various houses in this place, which trade, however secretly the prisoner with his adherents conducted it, finally, when the last theft by them was committed at the house of the Firemaster Jan Casper Loos, being fortunately discovered, the prisoner thus came into the hands of Justice. — And whereas such fences and receivers of stolen goods are highly dangerous to communities, as well as being to the utmost detriment of the good residents, and thus such evildoers are in no way to be tolerated, but must be punished according to the findings of the case as an example and deterrent to other such foul seekers of profit; Thus it is that the Honorable Worshipful Council of Justice aforesaid, having read and considered the written criminal claim and conclusion, made and taken by the Independent Fiscal Mr. Jan Jacob Serrurier on and against the prisoner, together with paying attention to all that was relevant to the case, Agrees. There appeared before the undersigned Commissioners from the Honorable Council of Justice of this Government the slave Baatjoe, who gave to the adjoining interrogatories such answers as are noted down beside them. Article 1. Whether he, the examinee, has not walked the streets offering spreads for sale? Says: Yes. Article 2. From whom he, the examinee, obtained the said spreads for sale, and how many he received in total? Says: From Iurgen Beijer, 13 pieces of Meyer sold. Article 3. Whether the spreads found in his chest were also obtained from Meyer? Says: He knows nothing of that and had no chest. Article 22. Whether the chest which is now shown to him with the goods contained therein does not belong to him, the examinee? Says: No, not to have a chest, and it being only the goods that he gave to Gree.
