Appeared before the undersigned delegates from the Honorable Council of Justice of this Government the person of William Thomas, to whom, after the preceding interrogation articles along with his answers given next to each of them were read aloud clearly and distinctly word for word, testified that he persists thereby, with the desire that nothing of it shall be retracted, but only changed regarding Article 6: that he cannot say that Leonais was the first of the plot, since the carpenter first spoke to him about it and that most of what he knows he heard from him, the carpenter, who always exercised a kind of command over them. Says to have arrived with a French brig, the name of which is unknown to him, in the capacity of sailor; next Monday it will be 3 weeks ago that he arrived here. Article 3: With how many men said ship was manned, when sailed, and from where. Says to have been manned with twelve men, namely the Captain, Captain Lieutenant, Lieutenant, boatswain, boatswain's mate, the cook, carpenter, boy, along with 4 sailors; sailed in the month of May last from the river of Bourdeaux. Article 4: Whether during the voyage any unpleasantries and disputes occurred, and whether he himself had any such. That this resulted for him, 1st prisoner, in him being placed in irons by order of the captain, while an official report was drawn up against him, 1st defendant, concerning this incident upon the accusation of the chief mate by the ship's authorities, so that the aforementioned chief mate could make use thereof in the place where justice could be done to him. That he, 1st prisoner, thereupon went to his brother, the 2nd defendant, and having made known his desire for revenge concerning this, saying: if we were men, we would be able to avenge ourselves! to which he, 1st defendant, was answered by his said brother, the 2nd defendant: well, why are we not men? so that this had that lamentable effect, that these two brothers then agreed together to commit a most gruesome murder on the aforementioned little ship and the seizure thereof, with the added agreement to keep themselves quiet regarding this for the time being, 367 and not to carry out this murderous plan of theirs before and until they should sight land, which was also complied with to the extent that this hideous plan only reached its full conclusion shortly before the actual execution thereof, or when they sighted the Caatsche coast, this being on the 13th of the past month of August, when the first 5 prisoners, having warned each other that it was time, brought their godforsaken conspiracy to its full maturity that very night and determined their heinous project to murder all the persons on the ship who were not part of their plot, and to make themselves masters of the same! That further the mate Boij and the 6th accused / which latter had been lying asleep in his bunk during this terrible bloodbath, and having been awakened by this commotion, had only then gotten up / having approached the first 5 prisoners trembling and having begged for the preservation of their lives, had then also, for that time, succeeded so far that, under promise of making themselves accomplices to the terrible, gruesome deed, they preserved their precious lives. We therefore inform you that you will receive by the Fabius, which you chartered from Sr. Bedard, who is its Captain, the cargo of a vessel arriving to us from Bengal by virtue of a contract we had concluded with the Monnerons for a much more considerable purchase. Gentlemen of the Government of the Cape of Good Hope Port Louis, Isle de France, July 27, 1786. As you will see in more detail from the invoice, the object of our shipment will consist of 400 thousand of wheat and 100 thousand of rice, which we yield to you under the same conditions as our bargain, that is to say, wheat at 20 per quintal and rice at 16, the whole payable in bills of exchange on the Treasurer of the Colonies in Paris. Although the wheat is not of the first quality, it makes very good bread, though somewhat brown; it is thus that we have consumed it ourselves. We then proceeded to the weighing of the bales which appeared to us capable of being repaired and transported, and found: 135 bales of Mocha coffee weighing net 37,666 liv. 402 ditto of ditto of Jacatra, 94,508 liv. 33 bags of Pomy of the mixed coffee, 3,092 liv. Together, 135,266 liv. From which results a loss of 9,279 liv., amounting to 6 3/4 per cent. We observe that this loss appears to us to arise only from the considerable humidity that the said coffee had on the 16th of November 1782, as is certified by the official report of the 15th of the said month, made in the presence of the Sieur P: Bergh, Captain of the Morgenster, when the said coffee was unloaded and placed in the aforesaid warehouse, where it has remained until today, the 12th of May 1786, making a lapse of time of 3 1/2 years, during which it dried out considerably and consequently must have lost much of its weight; we also observe that the state of dryness in which this coffee was found, even that which was most damaged, made us judge that it could no longer produce any infection upon being loaded onto the ship Zeenimph, and that the bales and sacks having been repaired as well as it was possible to do, there was no inconvenience to loading the whole onto the said vessel. Consequently, it was unanimously decided to load the whole onto the Zeenimph, to be transported to Batavia for the account and risk of whom it may concern. Copy To which end, in order to meet the objectives of our highly respected Gentlemen Masters, the advice of the collective members being asked by the President as to what means they judged best and most capable to employ and be able to put into effect for the welfare of the people in general and for the prevention of diseases, to do as much good as possible, concerning the sick whose number was already 50, though of no danger thus far, after having considered the condition of the sick, it was then, upon the inquiry of the President after mature deliberations, mutually unanimously noted and approved to give the people every morning 1/2 mutsje of water in addition to 2 mutsjes of lemonade to drink in the evening, which, according to the opinion of the chief surgeon and President and further members, seemed to be a good means for the health of the people and for the prevention of further diseases, and in hope of a good effect. Whereupon the President was of the opinion that this harbor could be passed with peace of mind without touching at it, and having further asked each of the members their sentiment about this, each member jointly served His Honor with their consent, therefore, keeping the interests of the Honorable East India Company in view, it was decided with unanimity of opinions to sail past the said harbor of St. Jago and to continue our voyage with the utmost speed awaiting Heaven's blessing. 381. was on the 24th of the past month of July, per the State's frigate of war Juno, which had already departed from False Bay on the 4th of August thereafter, but the next day, having run in there again due to having suffered leaks and for the present still remaining in the aforesaid bay, we therefore take the liberty of sending Your Right Honourable Worships an authentic copy of our aforesaid humble letter with this dispatch. While on the 7th of this month Your Right Honourable Worships' Chamber ship the Nepthunus likewise set sail from the aforementioned bay for Batavia, on the other hand on the 10th ditto the ship Iagt Rust, likewise equipped by Your Right Honourable Worships, arrived safe and sound at this Government, having suffered only 2 deaths during the voyage and brought 15 sick to this place; which vessel we 382. shall have proceed on its voyage again as soon as possible. Also, successively on the dates of the 12th and 27th of August, the Dutch private ships Jan en Cornelis and the Geertruijda, projected in return for Your Right Honourable Worships' Chamber, arrived here from the aforesaid Indian capital; of which two hulls the first-mentioned, having already continued its voyage to Europe on the 16th of this month, the last-mentioned now also lies completely ready for the same purpose. And whereas by the skipper of the aforementioned vessel the Geertruijda, Daniel Kunneman, it has been made known to us by petition that his crew was lacking a number of fourteen men, and he, without having replenished the same, would not be able properly to prosecute the voyage to Europe, 383. with the request, therefore, that the said petitioner might be assisted with the aforesaid number of crew, and among them especially six good and experienced sailors, we have, for the aforesaid submitted reasons, consented to this request, and consequently assigned the said crew to the mentioned skipper Kunneman, on condition that equal monthly wages must be paid to them by his shipowners as they earned with the Honourable Company; while we have taken the liberty to grant such of those persons who, by serving out their contracted time or otherwise as seafarers, are qualified to enjoy the customary premium in the Fatherland, such premium with the pleasure and approval of Your Right Honourable Worships, and with regard to those who have no right to enjoy any premium, leaving the granting or not granting of the same to the esteemed discretion of Your Right Honourable Worships, in the hope that in this we shall have acted in accordance with your highest intentions.
