It was underwritten: Today, the 28th of February 1787, appeared before me, Ryno Johannes van der Riet, sworn clerk at the Secretariat of Justice of the Castle of Good Hope, present the hereinafter mentioned witnesses, Jacob Koman, cooper of the Honorable Company, of competent age, who, at the requisition of the Honorable and Esteemed Mr. Jacobus Johannes le Sueur, as according to the resolution of the Honorable and Esteemed Council of Policy performing the office of Fiscal in this matter, declared it to be the truth: That when the appearer, fully three weeks ago now, sold his pocket watch to the soldier Johannes Kuipers for thirteen rixdollars, and received in payment thereof eleven Spanish dollars, the appearer, at the request of the aforesaid Kuipers whether he would not exchange Spanish dollars for ducatoons, then also, having received from the said Kuipers sixteen Spanish dollars, handed over to him old ducatoons in return. The appearer declaring that on that same evening, from a certain soldier present there —as the appearer believes, named Dieverman or Everman—he exchanged for old ducatoons sixteen Spanish dollars. Appeared before me, Rijno Johannes van der Riet, sworn clerk at the Secretariat of Justice of the Castle of Good Hope, present the hereinafter named witnesses, the soldier Hendrik Dreeverman of Utregt, of competent age, stationed here at the Castle, who, at the requisition of the Honorable Worshipful Mr. Jacobus Johannes Lesteur, as specially qualified in this matter by the Right Honorable Governor and the Honorable Worshipful Council of Policy to discharge the office of Fiscal in this matter, declared it to be true: That the appearer, about 10 to 14 days ago now, without remembering the precise day or date, being on the fifth point of this Castle, was approached there by the fellow soldier here named Koningswinter, who asked the appearer whether he, the appearer, wanted to go with him to Papendorp in order to drink a jug of beer there, to which the appearer, although he had never before had any association with the said Koningswinter, consented; that three to four days thereafter, having gone with and at the request of the frequently mentioned Koningswinter to the beer house Underneath stood: of Copy - Copy Lit 6 1390 of a person commonly named Barentse, he had on that occasion met there the sailor Willem Stinke, who had lodged with the appearer in an inn in Amsterdam and was thus well known to the appearer; which Hinkel was just then wearing a pair of silver shoe and knee buckles, the aforementioned Koningswinter, while the appearer had wanted to purchase those buckles from the aforementioned Hinkel, immediately offered the appearer to buy the aforementioned pair of buckles from Hinkel and make a present of them to the appearer; that the appearer, not being able to conceive from what motives he, Koningswinter, who had no obligation to the appearer, could be so generous, directly refused this and merely requested him, since the appearer was not in funds at the time, to pay for the buckles to the aforementioned Henkel on the appearer's account, since the appearer is a shoemaker by trade and had money outstanding from several people on account of his handiwork, and would return the money for it to the aforementioned Koningswinter, if not all at once, then at least in two installments; and that he, Koningswinter, having bought the same buckles for 10 rixdollars and paid in Spanish dollars, subsequently handed those buckles to the appearer; That the appearer also, 5 to 6 days thereafter, having indicated to the aforementioned Koningswinter that he would like to buy a watch for himself, Koningswinter had answered the appearer that he had two watches and would gladly let the appearer have one of them, whereupon the appearer first proposed to him, before buying that watch, to first have it examined by a watchmaker; whereupon both of them went for the aforementioned purpose to a certain watchmaker here named Tonius, and the best of them having been pointed out by him, the appearer had then also immediately bought the same watch for 13 rixdollars from him, Koningswinter, and immediately paid in guilders and daalder pieces; The appearer further declared that during the time he has known the aforementioned Koningswinter, he has never seen him without money, and that on the evening before the said Koningswinter was taken into apprehension, while sitting with the soldiers Drooijenaard, Krampes, and Hendriks next to the lodging of the Dragoons, he had seen Koningswinter walking not far from there, being then busily engaged in counting out silver money; Finally, the appearer declared that he and his comrades had often greatly wondered how the aforementioned Koningswinter might have come by the money with which he was daily provided in such great measure. Appeared before me, Ryno Johannes van der Riet, sworn Clerk at the Secretariat of Justice of the Castle of Good Hope, in the presence of the witnesses to be named hereinafter, Johan Andries Coense of Magdeburg and Lodewijk Lindeman, both stationed as coopers at the cooperage here, of competent age, who, at the requisition of the Honorable Worshipful Master Jacobus Johannes Le Sueur, acting as Fiscal in this matter according to the resolution of the Honorable Worshipful Council of Policy here, declared it to be true: That about three weeks ago now, without the appearer being able to determine the exact time, a certain soldier of this Castle named Kuijpers, being a shoemaker, having come to the second appearer while the first appearer was present there, 1392 and since the second appearer had seen that the said Kuijpers held some Spanish dollars in one of his hands, he was asked whether he, Kuijpers, would exchange them, as he, the second appearer, needed them; that the said Kuijpers thereupon exchanged to each of the two appearers eight pieces of Spanish dollars, or together sixteen pieces, which the appearers also paid to him with 10 schellingen for each in guilder pieces, without the appearers having noticed any more Spanish dollars in the possession of him, Kuijpers, than the aforesaid sixteen pieces. The appearers declared nothing further, giving as reasons for their knowledge as in the text, being prepared to substantiate the same by oath. Below stood: That this thus passed in the Castle of Good Hope, in the presence of the clerks Nicolaas van Es and Johannes Henricus Fischer as witnesses, who duly signed the original minute of this together with the appearers and me, the sworn Clerk. That upon the arrival of the said carts at the money room, the chests on them being unloaded and carried inside, as well as placed on top of each other, the appearer, together with the ordinary commissioner Eksteen who was present there, had counted them accurately and, having still found the same number of twenty-six pieces, a note was immediately written by the same Eksteen and placed on those chests stacked together; That subsequently, the appearer along with the aforementioned Leebegut having been ordered by the commissioner Kuuhl to come into the Castle on Sunday the 7th of this month in the morning at 6 o'clock with two pushcarts, in order to convey the chests of the ship de Arend to the jetty, the appearer then also went with his cart, and the aforesaid Leebegut with another pushcart, to the Castle; where the appearer, having recounted the same chests in the presence of the commissioner Kuuhl, had found no more than twenty-five; of two chests, which the appearer knows very well were placed next to the pile beside each other on the floor because the stack had become too high on the day when they were brought into the room, only one was found in that place at that time; while furthermore twelve were loaded onto the cart of the appearer and thirteen onto that of the aforesaid Leebegut, and brought to the jetty, as well as transferred there according to custom bound to buoys into the Company's boat. 1423 current month of January, or on last Sunday, when the aforesaid ship was again seen under sail, the appearer had again received orders to have the aforesaid twenty-six money chests taken on board, just as he, the appearer, then also had the buoys required for that purpose transported to the jetty, and had gone along to keep watch there, due to the indisposition of the boatswain's mate; that when the money chests were brought to the jetty by the handcarts, loaded 13 pieces on one and 12 pieces on the other, escorted by the ordinary commissioner David Kuuk, the aforesaid Kuuhl said in substance to the appearer: How can Eksteen make me so confused, there are only twenty-five money chests, and he writes on the note that there must be 26; just as the aforesaid Kuuhl also immediately sent a boy to Eksteen with a message, without the appearer knowing what that boy came back to say, because as soon as the money chests were put into the boat, he, the appearer, had gone home.
