Against which another French small ship named Le Port Louis de l'Isle de France left the roadstead. Wednesday 3 While enjoying pleasant weather, accompanied by a fresh south-east wind, there arrived again to call at this bay the French private ship Alcide, commanded by Captain Andibers, having departed from Marseille on the 10th of September last and being destined for Isle de France. Thursday 4 the wind blew steadily strong from the south-east corner. 5 there arrived to put in here the North American small ship Advent under command of Captain Clarck, departed on date 13 August last from Salem and destined for India or else back to America, the crew of the Company's outward-bound vessel Den Arend having passed muster today. While this evening at eight o'clock at the house of the burgher Adjutant Francois de Necker a fire broke out very suddenly, which gained the upper hand with such rapidity that not only was that building thereby almost entirely reduced to ashes before one was able to come to assistance with the fire pumps, but the dwellings situated next to it were also ignited by the flames, so that all precautions had primarily to be applied to prevent the further advance of the fire, in which one was all the more, since there was little or no wind, so fortunately successful that only the roofs of the two houses on either side of the dwelling of the aforementioned De Necker were somewhat damaged, although the last-mentioned house was burned down to the ground, and one could not bring to an end the quenching of the smoldering fire underneath until midnight. A signal having been made on the first-mentioned date from the Head and Island for a Company's ship of the Danish nation, the same came sailing onto our roadstead with the fall of the evening of the last-mentioned day, and was found to be named Disco, commanded by Captain Johan Christiaan Kuulen, and departed from Bengal on date 20 October 1786 to return back to Copenhagen. Wednesday 17 the south-east wind blew in the morning still, but was replaced in the afternoon by a fresh sea breeze; and towards midday, hindered by the aforementioned land wind from reaching the ordinary berth on this roadstead, came to anchor outside there the ship De Schelde, returning from Batavia with 6 dead and 8 sick, which departed the aforementioned capital of India on date 26 October last, and sailed from the Sunda Strait on the 1st of November thereafter together with the ahead-sailing vessel De Twee Gezusters, on which vessel De Schelde, pursuant to that which had been assigned beforehand by Their Right Excellencies the Lords of the High Government of India to this Government, and its daily register of the just-expired year.

May In the Castle of Good Hope 1787. having been complimented; and which gentlemen Members of the Council, alongside the Military Captains of this Castle Philip van Heyden and Willem Bussini who had also been expressly commissioned for that purpose, subsequently accompanied the said gentleman English Governor to the Castle in the carriages standing ready for that purpose, where both the Honorable Governor and the other gentlemen Members of the aforementioned Political Council, being present, received Mr. Macpherson at the bottom of the steps of the facade of this Government House, and escorted His Honor inside to the Council Chamber. After various compliments and courtesies customary on such occasions had been exchanged on both sides, the aforementioned gentleman English Governor, when he departed again, was escorted down to the bottom of the Government House in the very same manner, and accompanied back to his lodgings on the same footing and in that same order, as had all been observed upon his arrival mentioned here before. While also, whenever the often-mentioned Mr. Macpherson, accompanied by the aforesaid gentleman commissioners, drove through the barrier of the Castle, 17 salute shots were fired from the Couvre face Imhof, and, both upon entering the Castle itself and upon departing from it again, arms were presented by a guard commanded by an officer saluting with the spontoon and the march was beaten. As soon as Mr. Macpherson had returned to his lodgings, the Honorable Governor and the other gentlemen Members of the Council of Policy, and thereafter the entire Corps of Officers serving here, namely both those of the garrison and the Artillery, as well as of the Regiment de Meuron, paid a complimentary visit to His Honor. May In the Castle of Good Hope 1781 May In the Castle of Good Hope 1787. — with the ships Beeverwyk and Vreedenburg on date 3 February from Canton and on 13 March sailed out of the Strait of Sunda, while on the said ship the Gouverneur Generaal de Klerk, smallpox having prevailed, of which however, according to the declaration of the chief surgeon, the last person had already died on 22 February, as care had also been taken to throw overboard all goods belonging to the persons who had been infected therewith, and furthermore entirely to cleanse and air the vessel; so that the chief surgeon of False Bay was of the opinion that one no longer had to fear the consequences of the aforesaid disease; the said Resident Brand nevertheless had forbidden all correspondence with that vessel, and thus both access to as well as departure from the same, and he, the Resident himself, had not dared to bring any letters to the shore, much less have any order goods transported thither, before and above all having obtained in respect of both matters the necessary orders and commands requested by him from the said Honorable Governor. — Whereupon on the part of His Honor the said Resident was immediately informed in reply that, being regarded as very serviceable, the aforesaid precautions to cut off all communication with the said vessel should be continued therewith, until the chief surgeon of that keel, who to that end would have to proceed promptly towards the Cape, should have sworn to his given declaration in respect of the time that the smallpox had already ended, and the precautions taken on board against it, in order thereafter to be unconcerned with greater certainty about the consequences of any remaining infection, and subsequently to have all amenities supplied to the repeatedly mentioned vessel as usual, which also took place after the swearing of the aforesaid declaration. Friday 26 troublesome wind first from the southwest and then southeast, but continuously cold, while a multitude of clouds seemed to portend rain. And the aforesaid gentlemen proceeded thereupon together inside, the French General lingering for some time in the Council Chamber, while many courtesies and ceremonies were exchanged back and forth.
