Being ready to depart, this vessel had to wait until 31 May, and its helm was broken during the storm on the 20th, after which this vessel had to be provided again with a new helm, and took in water and provisions, being provided. From Europe to Batavia: The Meermin, Honourable Company's ship, Franc:s Duminij, frigate ship permanent for the Cape, arrived 11 April, mustered 26 May, sailed 3 June. Has taken in 225 mudden of wheat for Batavia as well as some equipment goods from here for reimbursement, and is provided with water and provisions. The Gerechtigheid, Honourable Company's return ship from Ceylon to Europe, Jan Jopst Droop, arrived 18 May, mustered 6 June, sailed 12 June. Received some small water and provisions. The Enkhuiser Maagd, Jan C: Drillinger, arrived 18 May, mustered 6 June, sailed 12 June. Took in 1975 mudden of wheat for Batavia, furthermore took in necessities for the Bay, and is provided with water and provisions. Christoffel Colombus, Daniel Kikkert, arrived 29 April, mustered 13 May, sailed 26 May. Having been mustered on 13 May, in the storm on the 19th to the 20th thereafter its longboat and boat ran aground on the beach and broke to pieces, the tiller broke off crosswise before the hole, the follower of the daily cable broke, lost the sheet anchor, and wore out all its hides on the ropes, of all which articles (except the longboat) that vessel had to be provided again, and was ready to sail again on 22 May. Having parted a cable in the night between May 22 and 23, this vessel had to be provided with an additional heavy cable. Have hauled the country boat Friesland onto the beach on June 22 in order to repair it. Since the departure of the ships from this roadstead, besides unloading and storing the goods from the grounded ships, people have been busy cleaning the roadstead by sweeping for anchors, which is still being continued daily as much as the weather and wind in any way permit. The country boats Angenitha Clara and Cornelia Charlotta departed for the Saldanha Bay on June 27, carrying timber for the posts there, and furthermore to row wood for the service of the country boats. 260 15 the ship de Meermin for paid salaries ƒ 3778:16:— consumed expenses 172:10:5: ƒ 3951: 6:1 The estate accounts of the Honourable Company's deceased servants, whose estates were administered and sold by the pay bookkeeper as Curator ad lites, have also been duly examined and found that the entry and calculation thereof were made according to the Indian standard currency here, and that the auction books agree with the original records of the auctions held, and these with the inventories; likewise that the death accounts of the deceased persons, for the net yield of their estates, with the deduction of 6 7/18 percent for exchange loss, according to the highly honoured letter from their Right Honourable and Highly Respected the Lords Directors in the Fatherland, dated 3 April 1778, have each been credited for their share, and that amount, to the sum of 325 rixdollars 71 stivers, or ƒ 1173:11, together with the further sum of 87 rixdollars 12 stivers, or ƒ 24:24 for exchange loss, was paid into the Company's treasury here by the aforesaid Curator ad lites as of the end of August, and duly accounted for in the trade books, so that in that respect everything was handled in accordance with the renewed and amplified order of the High Indian Government. Trusting hereby to have complied with the honoured order of Your Right Honourable and Highly Respected, we let this serve as our humble report.
