Souratta, 14 May Anno 1757 The expedition has been assigned. Further arrangements made regarding it time of expedition to which one conforms, as well as to the resolutions in the case of a lack of men, that keel would not be able to come to the assistance of the shore; the conduct of this expedition being for the rest entrusted to the members of our assembly, the skipper and Equipagiemeester Jan Warnar Falck and the junior merchant Hendrik Kroenenbergh, with the general command being conferred upon the former, and, owing to the illness of our ensign, the command over the militia upon the latter; and the same being furnished with an instruction whereby they have among other things also been authorized, in case of necessity and if it can occur without apprehensions of ill consequences, to leave the hooker at Rajapour to overwinter there, as Your Right Honourables may likewise observe from an authenticated copy thereof, which we have the honour to present hereby to Your Right Honourables, and whereby we trust that Your Right Honourables will see that proper measures have been framed and all possible precautions taken and provided for to ensure this expedition does not prove fruitless, or the business be spoiled through recklessness. Taking the liberty therefore to refer respectfully thereto and to our aforesaid resolution, also regarding some particulars which we judge best to leave unmentioned, we shall in the continuation hereof, under the main heading of the Bassein Pirates, report on the success it has had; noting here in advance only that this vessel, departing this roadstead on 7 March, already arrived at Danda-Rajapour on the 10th, and discovering no enemy there, departed again on the 10th from that 85 1 From Souratta, 14 May Anno 1757. [illegible] that factory, continuing its voyage to Geria, from where the same is expected via Rajapour with the utmost longing, the more so because on 8 April, or after we had already advanced thus far with minuting this, no other news of the same had been received than that there was said to be heavy cannonading somewhat north of Geria; from which we deduce that a battle may possibly have occurred there; it being self-evident that the small vessels as well as the hornes have also served to unload and load the ships, and the hooker alongside the gallivats to cover the unloading craft sailing back and forth. Regarding the delivered cargoes of the hooker de Jonge Jacob and the battila de Voorn at Calicut, a finding transmitted by the factors there having been reviewed at our session of 17 May of last year, it was disposed of as evidenced by the resolution of that date, into which that finding has been incorporated, according to the tenor of the Regulation on write-offs; as also at the session of 30 March last concerning the findings of the delivered cargoes of the ships Vlissingen and Lapienenburg, on which among others the following excessive shortages were found, namely, on that of Vlissingen on the Vijfhoeks beer - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 1 7/8. 87 May Anno 1757 From Souratta the 14th Concerning the porcelains brought by 4 ships 1 spar 2 rolls of Dutch canvas and 15 lb or 30 skeins of sail yarn destined for this Directorate and, according to the declaration of the ship's officers, employed for ship's use, to charge the surplus to Your Right Honourables' respected further dispositions at purchase price, for reasons as well to be seen in our Resolutions as those which moved us to send the second spar, which was found here beset with cracks, worm-eaten, and unusable for any service, back to Your Right Honourables' place of residence on the same ship while charging the cost; to sell at public auction to the highest bidder one piece of scarlet cloth found heavily spotted and more or less damp, alongside 4 pieces of yellow cloth throughout damaged by moths, and all five unfit for gifts; as well as that what was found short upon the count of the cargo of Vlissingen has been charged only to the account of the Lieutenant of that vessel, Willem van der Lande. The specification of the porcelains received with Rammekensveld and the Barbara Theodora having been found recorded behind the invoice of the aforesaid two vessels, one thereby had the opportunity to draw up a finding of what was brought by the four ships, which is likewise incorporated into our Resolutions of the last of March, and demonstrates that of some assortments an extraordinary quantity, namely from 10 to 20 per cent, was found to be lacking in whole pieces, From Souratta the 14th May Anno 1757 Return of the sale recently without one being able to say positively whether all the pieces found make up the exact number of wholes, because a large portion was so shattered that it was impossible to piece them together, although, according to the Resolutions of the 27th November last, the precaution was taken not to bring to the scale the crates that were externally in good condition, and the gross weight of the few that were weighed, and wherein no empty space was found, differed so little that this must apparently be attributed solely to the drying out of the wood; wherefore it was deemed that nothing else could be done but to have the reports concerning what was brought by Vlissingen and Papienenburg sworn under oath, just as had already taken place regarding those of the two other ships, and subsequently to have the shortages of each assortment written off without an amount of money on the same. Having already had the honour in our respectful last of the 5th February last to report to Your Right Honourables how and to what extent the sale of the imported merchandises with the first two ships had succeeded, we shall, to complete our report regarding this matter, give place here to the following drawn up thereof since. [illegible] From Souratta the 14th May Anno 1757 Merchandises with the last ships have not yet found buyers. Sale of some desired goods at auction. In further continuation of this matter, we report that we have already been in negotiations with the brokers regarding the sale of those which were brought with Vlissingen and Papienenburg, not without the prospect of disposing of all on the same conditions, except for the powdered sugar which they shrank from, item the manufactured goods for which up to now no one has been willing to make an offer; but that the news regarding the ruining and plundering of Delhi and Muttra and the capture of Agra by the Pathans, which hereabouts has caused such an alteration that the carts which had come down expressly to transport merchandises in demand in the upper lands have departed empty, and the trade in everything that is not sold and consumed around Souratta is at a complete standstill, has frightened them away from it, and made them choose the side of temporising somewhat, to see what turn matters will take, and what consequences this new violent shaking of the Hindustani Empire will have for trade, in which one cannot consider them wrong. The resolved sale of the coral, eaglewood, and the false pearls at public auction for whatever they could fetch, communicated in our previous year's letter and approved by Your Right Honourables' resolution, took place on the 3rd of May last,

For the steel no more than 21 guilders per hundred pounds has yet been offered, or 9 guilders less than the fixed price, for which one does not dare part with the same without special qualification from Your High Nobilities, and for the sticklac, hartal or aurum pigmentum just as few offers have come as for the benzoin malax, of which mention was made hereinbefore in answering Your High Nobilities' esteemed letter; the musk, of which last-mentioned item no mention was made in our previous year's description due to an erroneous statement of the trade office balances, 70 1/4 remtilla being deducted therefrom, ƒ From Surat, 14 May Anno 1757 wherefore it was deemed proper to send these aromatics, consisting of a quantity of 37 7/16 lb, on this occasion to Batavia, charging the cost price, as one sees no other outlet for them, and there is such a large quantity of them in the city that one cannot reasonably flatter oneself with obtaining their purchase cost for a long time yet; but the sticklac, which at the auction held in March recently had already dropped to a 22 1/4 percent loss without any buyer appearing then or afterwards, will be auctioned once again and if necessary let go at a loss of 25 percent or thereabouts; however, the benzoin malax and half of the hartal have been sent to Rajapour to see whether someone can be found there who is willing to pay its cost or thereabouts, without any news having been received so far that any bid has been made for it. The Company's brokers on the ultimate of August last, besides f 731299:18:8 on account of the merchandise purchased in the year 1755/6 but still uncollected, being also in arrears for the year 1753/4 the sum of f 241081:—:—, and having requested at our session of the 11th of that month another extension for the settlement of the last-mentioned amount, for diverse reasons stated in their request presented at the resolution of that date, we have granted them the same until the ultimate of December, around which time that old debt was liquidated, just as the other was reduced in proportion as they were able to collect the merchandise. And one has reminded the employees, on the occasion of the sale of powder sugar included therein in the month of June at f 30:18 the hundred pounds, that it is no merchant practice to keep the goods so high in price that thereby the sale in quantity might be hindered, particularly with relation to such wares that we do not have exclusively, but share with others, and wherewith one is also provided here; just as they were also written in August, on the occasion that they communicated among other things that they were offered f 295:— for the hundred lb of nutmegs, that the spices absolutely must not be surrendered below the Company's fixed prices, after deducting not only the brokerage fees, alongside coolie and weighhouse wages, but also those of the receiver, to the end that they let the same serve them once and for all as a cynosure; through the arisen troubles in those surroundings, of which mention has been made in our general letter since the ultimate of August, nothing else has been able to be turned over there from the aforesaid yield since that date than: 1749 7/8 lb Cloves at f 571:14 the 100 lb 484 1/4 lb Nutmegs at f 306:3:— Regarding the sale of merchandise at Ketsmandui in the year 1755/6, we take the liberty, insofar as not much report was made regarding it in our former description, to refer to the following below. The black, white, and floral cloths, being completely unwanted there and the latter mostly damaged by moths, according to the received letter from the aforementioned Kroonenburgh dated 27th April of the past year, we have already, by letter of the 20th May, granted authorization that if they cannot be disposed of even at cost price or slightly less according to their quality and condition, to send them back here for our further disposition; however, the servants have not yet availed themselves thereof, nor, to our knowledge, found an opportunity to transfer ownership of them, and according to the report of the aforesaid factor incorporated into our resolutions of the 27th November, there is also no prospect of making anything above cost price for the remaining manufactures. From Surat, 14 May 1757. Rejected cloths sold at public auction to reduce his debt. Tenders of linens in Cutch and Navanagar have been waived. Report regarding the contracts here and in Broach. The remaining cloths from the Company's parcel were, at the request of the same, sold at public auction for ƒ 4884:5:—, for which he has been credited in account, and those from the broker's parcel, after he had submitted his account according to the aforementioned statement, were delivered to his correspondent here. At our aforesaid session of 17 May, it was likewise resolved to waive for now all contracting of linens in Cutch and Navanagar, since it is better for the Company not to enter the market with such inferior goods, and there was no reason to expect any improvement for the present, for reasons detailed at length in our resolution of that date. Notwithstanding the high price of cotton in the past year and the manifold vexations to which the merchant is currently subjected, both during the transport of goods and otherwise, as well as those of the weavers and spinners, who consequently demand much higher payment, against which there is no remedy because of the various independent governments, it was finally managed, as appears from our resolution of 17 May last, that both at this main office and at Ahmedabad and Broach, Contracting of some Naginapats. and especially the Naginapats of the sample. Tenders were successfully concluded against the previous year's prices, with the sole exception of the Naginapats according to sample No. 15, which the suppliers affirmed they could not produce at the previous prices with red or so-called brown checks, as requested in the Homeland Order for the year 1756, because the brown-red dye was much more expensive than the blue and yellow. Consequently, according to the resolution of 27 July, these could not be contracted for less than ƒ 165:15:— per corge, being 5¼ percent dearer than the ordinary sort. Due to this difference in cost, which possibly may not have been anticipated in the Netherlands, we thought it best to conform to the intentions of the Noble Right Honorable Lords Masters by having only 2000 pieces, or half, manufactured according to the new sample and the remainder according to the old sample. Nagipats with small eyes as a trial. Two bales, each containing 5 corges of Naginapats with small eyes, such as have been traded by the English for a year or two, were also ordered as a trial. These could not be obtained for less than ƒ 168:— for 20 pieces, or ƒ 4:00 per corge dearer than the ordinary sort according to sample No. 15, of which one bale marked number 176 was sent to Ceylon on the ship Ruijteveld, and the other is to follow at the first opportunity. To facilitate the fulfillment of the orders for cotton patolas, It was necessary to allow cotton patolas to be dyed with Surat madder roots. Poor success of the procurement in Broach, both regarding quantity and quality. The former was attributed, among other things, to the rejection of large quantities of various assortments, and yet, in examining the returns collected there, we found far more evidence of too lax rather than too strict a sorting, as may be seen in detail in our resolutions of 20 April, 4 June, 16 December, 28 February, and 30 March last. We shall not enumerate the particulars of these here to avoid tedious prolixity, but content ourselves merely with saying that we could not excuse the cost of the Cervoots, large Tjokria, and long Niquanias for the Fatherland, and in December the so-called fine Niquanias.

From Surat, 14 May, Anno 1757 and further set orders. demonstrations made by the broker were without effect. for the Fatherland and the large ones for Cape of Good Hope, and to discount the whole narrow black baftas received for that government in February by 5 per cent, and to leave the same to the accountability of the factors Lodewijk Andries van Seger and Christiaan Heijdeman, subject to their recourse on the broker; and furthermore, regarding the acceptance of those goods, to fine them one month of wages for the benefit of the Batavia Diaconate poor, and to order that henceforth one of them should always come down with the returns in person to attend the examination thereof and be convinced that it is conducted impartially. Against which reduction of prices the broker requested that it might be taken into favorable consideration that, notwithstanding the excessive dearness of cotton in Anno 1756, he had indeed accepted all the piece goods at the previous year's prices, but not until he had experienced that through all his remonstrations in that regard to the first signatory, he could not obtain the slightest increase, but had to choose either to see the entire contracting given to the Surat suppliers or to suffer a loss instead of a profit on the delivery for a year. Which we cannot deny, but we did not deem it of such weight as to make any alteration on that account to our aforementioned resolution, by which the same is by no means wronged. But upon the request made by the factors to be excused from the continual travel to and fro imposed upon them, as it cannot be done without expense, declaring that our annotations were sufficient proof for them regarding the finding of the returns, we have dispensed them therefrom for as long as they shall not consider themselves aggrieved by our remarks and dispositions. What was allocated to Ahmedabad for procurement. How far this succeeded. Most fortunately, the office of Ahmedabad was this year only assigned the procurement of the demanded 56 packs of karikams and 51 packs of flag cloth, or 107 packs in total, of which the servants counted on having 80 packs or a little more ready by the middle of this month. However, the dispatch will in all likelihood not be able to take place without the payment of double toll, as both the governor and the Marathas maintain that it must be paid to them; and we judge the Company's goods there to be in such great danger as long as the siege lasts, that we think one would do poorly not to get over that if one can thereby secure free passage for the caffila. For the insurance thereof, as much as 7 to 7½ per cent is demanded both here and in Ahmedabad, and that by insurers for whose security one can by no means vouch; wherefore, to the question of the servants whether they should contract the insurance on that footing, or dispatch without insurance and along which route, namely via Cambay, Broach, or otherwise, coupled with a communication that the brokers undertook to deliver the remaining 27 packs at the same costs as the preceding ones at Surat at the latest by the end of May, From Surat, 14 May, Anno 1757 and insurance addressed, with a recommendation to ensure the validity of the passports. we replied that we authorized them to dispatch the goods along the road which they, in the present state of time and affairs, should judge the best and most secure, trusting to the discretion of the Lord Governor that His Honour would by no means require us to let the caffila take the road of Cambay—as we otherwise had to promise in order to bring the negotiations regarding the robbed goods at Jambusar to success—if the returns would thereby be exposed to greater danger. And that, however exorbitant the insurance was, we would not be averse to it in this precarious juncture if one could fully rely on the solvency of the insurers and the certainty of being completely indemnified by them in case of robbery or plunder; but otherwise, we could not see that the insurance would serve any purpose other than to saddle the Company with that much more expense upon a successful delivery. And therefore there was no doubt that one should follow the example of the Armenian and native merchants, who know very well what their essential interest requires and entails, by dispatching the same uninsured, agreeing as best one could with the Maratha commanders regarding the toll and free passage, and ensuring as much as possible that the passports were drawn up in proper form and sealed.

Ditto 119 From Souratta The 14th of May In the Year 1757 cause of the slow defective delivery of the cloths. good orders or notices lacking Regarding the cotton yarn, sufficient reasons have been demanded from the suppliers at this main office, who also do not appear to have been completely free from an intention to offset the high price of cotton through a lower quality of the cloths, and as a result greater quantities than in previous years had to be rejected; this defective delivery, however, is not to be attributed so much to that as to the high cost of the ingredients required for dyeing, whereof the suppliers testify that although they contracted the dyeing wages considerably higher than in previous years and continually spurred on the printers, they were unable to get any work out of their hands; just as the defective delivery of the silk patolas, on the other hand, originates from the high cost of silk, since not a single bale thereof was brought from Bengal in the autumn, which at the time of the contracting was impossible to foresee; we being able for the rest to assure Your High Nobilities that it was not lacking in good orders, attentions, or exhortations on our part, as our successive letters sent to Ahmedabad and Broach, and among them also especially that to the last-mentioned residency of the 15th of September 1756, bear witness; we having furthermore [addressed] the servants at the last-mentioned office by the dispatch of the 9th of April concerning the defective delivery of the cotton yarn, on whose complete fulfillment by the homeland what apparently come. 18. 4. 15. 58.

From Surat, 14 May 1757. Communicative warning. Obstacles that prevent holding a new tender to contract. Success of the delay with the cotton contracts. How and on what conditions the same was concluded. Patna demands were so strongly insisted upon, being warned to be mindful of having to provide sufficient reasons for it and to warn the broker that, if he delivers fewer goods than the money he has received, he can count on having to pay back into the treasury whatever balance he remains in arrears, with an interest of two per month, to which it would however be very difficult to compel him in case of unwillingness. Meanwhile, the brokers and suppliers here have already been sounded out regarding the holding of a further tender, by which we intend to contract anew for what is lacking in the demands of the offices from which no further petition has yet been received, but one has not been able to persuade them to do so, since the price of cotton can only be counted on once the purchasing for export ceases, and we now, as it is noticeably lower than last year, urge for a reasonable reduction in the prices of the linens. Our delay with the tender of the cotton has had such success that the delivery of the demanded bales for Batavia, besides two shiploads calculated at at least 1800 bales for Bengal, has been contracted with the Company's brokers here at 10 rupees or 151:10 guilders per candy, being 37:10 guilders or 19 1/3 percent less than last year, provided Surat, 14 May 1757. In Cutch, nets were also cast early. provided that the Company itself bears the transport charges and one would waive the collection in Broach, for which the Director, with our foreknowledge, had drawn up the notes so as not to depend on their discretion; half of those amounts, because of the passing of time and the necessity to vigorously proceed with the delivery at once, advanced beforehand, and having the same collected from such sea places in the Gulf as they would indicate, to run for the account and risk of the Company as soon as it should be shipped. In Cutch Mandvi one also tried to cast the nets early, but until now again without success; for the broker having informed the servants in September that he hoped to be able to deliver the candy of cotton between the last price of 127:18 guilders and [illegible] guilders the Cutch candy of 725 lb, one has, since no gold nor silver specie can be obtained there that can be brought hither without an excessive loss, and one knew no means to get the Company's funds remitted from there, as the exchange rate climbed from 3 5/6 to 10 percent and was even erratic regarding the agio, authorized them to invest the Company's money therein, even if they had to negotiate bills of exchange up to 15 percent; but no sooner had they received that instruction, or the broker declared From Surat, 14 May 1757. Concerning the custom clearance of the return cargoes, or the drawn up toll account of the dispatched merchandise in the past financial year, large differences arose with the Moorish toll officials, who claimed and very strongly insisted upon a general increase or higher calculation of the same, owing to the evident greater dearness than in previous years, and the rather notable difference between the true and the stated cost prices; but primarily that the price of cotton should be taken at 120 rupees. How it was settled. And as is evident from our resolution of the 6th of September last, it was deemed advisable to settle that difference, in order to prevent worse consequences with the present unreasonable and despotic government, by conceding so far that, just as in anno 1751, one hundred rupees per candil was charged for that commodity. What the aforesaid expenses consist of. The expenses incurred in the transport to and from of merchandise consist of only two entries, namely: a specification of expenses incurred by the former second of Ahmedabad, Ellinkhuijsen, both in the transport of the returns hither, amounting to ƒ 2039:19:8, and for the returned unsaleable manufactured goods, amounting to ƒ 2115: 18:—, and thus together amounting to ƒ 4155:17:8; and another for the freight and further expenses for the transport of some rations, medicines, and necessities, advanced by the present second, Zimmerman, amounting to ƒ 64:10: 8; which we, as both contained nothing excessive or improper, approved at our sessions of the 20th of April and 27th of July 1756. How the travel expenses brought into account were discounted. From which, regarding the travel expenses of the aforesaid Ellinkhuijsen and the assistant Vuling who came down with him, for which the former brought ƒ 186. 1 to the Company's account, we have only liquidated ƒ 136:12:—, as the arrangement approved by Your Excellencies entails, according to the resolution of the 20th of April of last year; whereas, on the contrary, on the 27th of July were passed those of the said Zimmerman, amounting in total to ƒ 361:14:–, as they did not exceed the set allowance. Lesser amount of the private toll and its cause, and greater proceeds from the small seal. Also the gifts in the latest financial year. The private toll yielded in anno 1755/6 for the Company ƒ 2243:12:—, or ƒ 1781:3:— less than in the previous financial year, caused by the fact that private navigation has almost completely ceased, the last ship which the Dutch private traders here owned, except for one, having been sold long ago, and therefrom accrued to the lord's dues in the aforesaid financial year ƒ 2712: 18:—. The revenue from the small seal amounted in total to ƒ 794: 8:—, or 68: 16:— more than anno 1754/5.
