cordage purchased. to prevent all frauds in private trade the skipper of Kattendijke concerning the objection made in connection therewith by the pilots, whether the shallowness of the river below the Haare Spruis, has taken such a resolution as is noted here before, under the answering of the extracts from the Fatherland. Furthermore, because of the great loss of cordage during the bringing in of three heavy ships from the Fatherland, we have seen our stock so far reduced through the necessary issues to the return ships, that on the 26th of November, upon the presentation by the Master of the Equipage that Bleiswijk still needed to have at least two heavy ropes for its departure, and since one was also lacking on Welgelegen, we were obliged to have three European heavy ropes purchased, which was then done for 1531 guilders, 3 stivers, 8 pennings apiece, since the coir ropes, only according to the statement of the aforementioned Master of the Equipage, are of use here in the river. old mint balances and of assayed sicca rupees will be made at Cassembazaar. at Hoegli Further, again number 20 or f 41 of the old mint balance, and we enclose herewith a report from the Junior Merchant Haghadamius concerning the differing alloy of some rupees successively received from the mint. After a trial had been made here to have the dies demanded by Your High Noble required, without such having succeeded as wished, the Cassembazaar servants were charged with this commission; but from their letter of the 12th of this month we have seen that they do not dare to address the regular die-cutter in the mint, so as not to make the matter known all at once, and have looked out for another private, skillful man, but had not yet found one. In the meantime, they have had some pieces prepared in advance so that, as soon as an engraver is found, a trial may be made on them, and if any should reach us before the departure of this vessel, we shall send them along. Regarding the employment of money from the end of August until the end of January last, we take the liberty of referring to the accompanying Memorandum, and have furthermore to state that, considering that with the IJsselmonde, contrary to all knowledge and expectation, not the least relief of silver or cash had been received, and that one would therefore soon run into embarrassment for funds for the advance payments, we resolved on the 29th of January last to order the Cassembazaar servants to send us two lakhs of rupees from their stock, which has already been carried out. And since we likewise would not be able to assist the Patna servants, while nevertheless the time for making advance payments on the opium trade began to approach, we judged on the 17th of February not to let slip the opportunity that presented itself to obtain Sa. Rs. 800 at interest at that office. Their design to make themselves master of the best patteni having thus failed, and the Chief Bacharacht pressing strongly upon the English Chief, pointing out the consequences that were to be feared from these measures, an order was first sent not to include us in the aforementioned prohibition, and the same was subsequently also revoked with respect to the native merchants. Advancement of money on raw mochta. Fabrics for Japan did not turn out well. Regarding the acquisition mentioned around January, that the latter sort was purified as much as possible of the coarse thread, we, noting that it appeared less than that of the previous year, have recommended the servants to be attentive in that regard and above all to ensure that the quantities of the finer sorts were increased. Upon the request of the Kassembazaar servants, by letter of 31 December, we have, in view of the approaching time for the collection of raw mochta, authorized them to advance a moderate sum for that purpose. In consequence thereof, according to their letter of 11 February, 100 florins was delivered for the purchase. The sample thereof has also already been sent to us, the mochta being estimated to cost 17 florins 1 stiver 6 penningen for the first sort or letter A, which is about 1 percent or 4/16 percent less than two years ago, nothing of it having been prepared in the past year. We have decided hereupon to have the full required 1500 lb procured, if so much will be obtainable. The silk fabrics for Japan have not turned out as well as those for Europe. The servants report concerning the same, in their aforementioned letter of 11 February, that the negotiation of silk, the plain double armozines, were generally found to be so common that without a reduction of price they could not have passed for a third sort; that they had left them with the suppliers who had refused to agree to the price reduction of one Current Rupee per piece, and further, notwithstanding they had offered them for half a rupee less, persisted in the previous decision; furthermore, of the derries, upwards of 50 pieces were rejected as unacceptable, as well as a parcel of 20 pieces of sample fabrics, which were of good material, reduced on the agreed price by 4 Annas Current or 7 stivers the piece on account of some stripes that did not belong in them. All of which we have approved, it having been found by ourselves upon the inspection of several bales on 10 February that all the sorts are very thin and poor. Provisionally, negotiations have also already been held with the merchants regarding the new delivery of silk fabrics for this year, and a price increase is asked. As regards first that of the main office: we have by resolution taken on the 31st of May of the past year upon the submitted written report of the commissioners for the inspection of the buildings under the ultimate of February prior, resolved to have the defects of the residences in the Fort remedied in the most economical manner according to annual custom; furthermore, in order to save expenses as much as possible, only to have the most necessary doors and windows renewed of the warehouses in which the most precious goods are stored, notwithstanding that the greater part was reported as rotted and unusable; and further to allow some other improvements that could suffer no delay to take effect. But since, at the same time, it was taken into consideration by us that the state of the buildings worsened from year to year without the ordinary annual repairs being able to preserve them from further decay, even notwithstanding that now and then a collapsed flat roof or fallen wall was renewed, we deemed it necessary to have the commissioned Supervisors of the Buildings, the Sea Captain and Master of Equipage Lucas Zuidland and the Military Captain and Commander of the Garrison Johan Hendrik Zinne, prepare a calculation of what the repairs of the defects mentioned in the aforementioned report would amount to upon presentation. Such a calculation then having been made, the same is offered to Your High Nobilities under the enclosures hereof, together with the report of the aforementioned commissioners, in all reverence, amounting to a sum of rupees 18026: 24; and we take the liberty to demonstrate to Your High Nobilities in this respect that the postponement of the aforementioned repairs can bring about nothing other than that the defects worsen, and the expenses for their improvement in the future become greater. Moreover, regarding some flat roofs, one cannot rest assured that they will not collapse unexpectedly sooner or later, and especially in the rainy season. Upon the renewal of some of the same in the past year, one had to be astonished that they could have held out so long; for although the beams outwardly appeared sound, it was nevertheless found that they were entirely hollow, both through rot and through white ants, extending barely a thumb's width into the wall, while the remainder of the ends was completely perished. This we can assure Your High Nobilities to have seen ourselves for the greater part of us, and it is thus not without foundation or necessity that we humbly request to be provided in this matter with Your High Nobilities' esteemed approval. And truly, concerning the necessity of those improvements, no doubt remains if one reflects upon the consequence that postponing the other repairs has had. For the servants informed us, in their letter of 29 August, that the perimeter wall on the south-east side of the Lodge, and the outer wall of Warehouse No. 3, had sagged and given way so much due to the heavy rain that, to prevent accidents given the crowd of passers-by, they had stationed two peons at the approach to the former, and had been forced to have the latter, or the wall of the warehouse, demolished, whereby the flat roof, which they had attempted in vain to support with props, collapsed. Since the Lodge now lay entirely open on one side because of this, and the repair of that wall along with the flat roof would cost only about Sicca Rupees 563:8 according to the aforementioned estimate, we resolved on 17 September to authorize them for that reconstruction. But since they also requested permission to charge the aforementioned two peons to the account, we judged this unnecessary because they could have used two of the ordinary peons for it instead. Nevertheless, we later consented to allow them to charge the same to the account, following their representation by letter of 12 October that all the ordinary peons were employed in other necessary duties at that time, as well as ten others who, according to their letter of 25 September, had to be taken into service since the aforementioned perimeter wall on the south-east side of the Lodge, along with a small wall beside the staircase of the water gate and the flat roof lying upon it, had completely collapsed due to the heavy winds and torrential rains that had persisted there for more than ten consecutive days, and thus the Lodge lay completely open on two sides; while at Singia most of the warehouses had also collapsed. At the latter mentioned place, according to a letter of 12 October, it would be possible to manage with the repair of one of the warehouses, or else with a gola, as a storage place for the gunny bags, opium leaves, etc., was absolutely necessary. A survey of the damage caused by the aforementioned bad weather to the Patna Lodge having been made by specially appointed commissioners, it was seen from the report received thereof that, besides the perimeter wall mentioned before, the staircase of the chintz printing works and the shed at the soldiers' guardhouse had also collapsed, while some other damages had been discovered that urgently required repair. Along with this, those servants sent us an estimate, which was inserted alongside the report in our Resolution of 25 October. The renewal of the perimeter wall and the improvement to Warehouse No. 5 were estimated therein at Sicca Rupees 7320: which appearing excessive to us, before declaring ourselves on the matter, we had it examined by persons knowledgeable therein. And upon the servants' further representation by letter of 13 November that the English as well as the natives were masonry-building heavily, causing a considerable rise in the price of building materials and labor wages, and their further insistence on the necessity, we wrote to them, in accordance with the resolution of 26 November, that it was judged that the repairs which they had stated at Sicca Rupees 7320: could well be done for around Rupees 6000:-, and that we authorized them to do so in that case. This had the result that, as appears from their reply of the last day of December, upon further consultation with the native master workmen and closer inspection of the old bricks, the expenses would amount to about Rupees 2500: less than they had initially estimated, and they also promised to pay every attention to this point; while they have also disbursed Sicca Rupees 2000:— for the collection of lime, as that work had to be ready before the rainy season, and according to a letter of 14 February another Sicca Rupees 1000: on the repair of the aforementioned south-east wall. According to the country's custom, the Lords Nawabs, as appears from the Kassembazaar letter of the 11th of February, have again had to be congratulated on account of receiving robes of honour from His Mogul Majesty, and the expenses on that occasion amounted to ƒ250:8:8 or ƒ23:12:8 less than 204 2447 before, and as such disbursements are unavoidable, we have thought fit to pass the same. To what was already mentioned in our previous letter regarding the entries and write-offs, it is to be added that on the 18th of February, upon a finding submitted by the Chief Administrator Isinck of 5940 lb of nutmegs and three packages of mace, it was resolved: 12½ lb of mite-eaten nutmegs, dust, and sweepings, calculating 18 3/8 percent loss and 1¾ lb volatilized, as well as 16¾ lb in underweight, and 163¾ lb of dust and white leaves on the mace, making an 18½ lb or 9 percent write-off to be passed, provided the mite-eaten nutmegs etcetera were sent in sealed jars to the Head Office, and the Commissioners Koning and Herklots confirmed their report with an oath; which latter, according to the judicial minute, to be found in our resolution of the 10th of this month, has duly taken place. As regards the spoiled cinnamon brought by the ship 's Gravezande, the same has, according to the report of the Chief Administrator Isinck, already been sent in sealed jars with the sloop the Troonprins, and regarding the arrack, of which compensation for half has been imposed on the aforementioned Chief Administrator, he has requested to be allowed to justify himself; which being granted to him, a report thereof goes forward among the annexes, whereby it is shown that there was a distinct report regarding the condition of the aforementioned arrack, a copy of which is attached to the report.

deficits written off which at Chhapra became unusable books of the year 1764/5: Upon reweighing the spices sent to Patna and the corals found at Patna, the findings of which can be found in the resolution of the 10th of February, some deficits were indeed detected, slightly more than what is permitted by the regulation. Yet because these were very slight, we permitted their writing off; all the more so since the report concerning the spices was also confirmed. The Patna servants also requested by letters of the last of December to be allowed to write off 250 gunny sacks at Chhapra and 130 at Singia, running under the pro restant balance, which were found to be unusable. But before permitting this, we wished to be informed about what caused it, in order to be able to have the Company indemnified in case neglect by anyone took place in this matter. The protracted illness of the trade bookkeeper Christoffel Mourits Doeve was the cause that the trade books could not be closed in due time, and upon his passing, the first undersigned ordered junior merchant Ross to settle the arrears of that work. Because of this, it was not until the 13th of February that one could proceed to charge junior merchants Humbert and Hagha Damius with the commission for examining the same, who accordingly submitted a report on the matter on the 18th of this month, concerning which, and our marginal resolutions thereon, we refer with due interpretation. Furthermore, in our resolution of the 15th of this month, a report from the aforementioned Ross was inserted regarding some errors made in the books, which we, pursuant to the proposal made therein, resolved to have redressed by transfer. The forward balances of the trade books currently being transferred, the initial and ending balances, have further been compared by the first two signatories of this letter against the ending balances of the previous book year, and the outgoing copies have been checked against the originals and signed for agreement by the head administrator and the trade transferor. The trade books of Cossimbazar and Patna were also ready at the appointed time, and the reports and dispositions upon them can be found in our resolution of the 26th of November of the past year. Among the enclosures, the separate statements of the expenses on merchandise at Cossimbazar and Patna are also forwarded herewith, as well as the copies of the registers of the papers sent to the meeting of the Seventeen. And we can further note here that on the session of the 26th of June, dispositions were made on the report of the head administrator concerning some adjustment invoices, and on the 15th of this month on that of the trade bookkeeper regarding the outstanding debtors in the books, requesting to be permitted to refer to the resolutions taken thereon. Only regarding the latter, noting that, pursuant to the decision established by resolution taken in the Council of the Indies on the 9th of July 1762, having judged merchant Rietveld, as former first warehouse master, liable for what the former second warehouse master De Wijs remained indebted to the Company at his death regarding the spices found short during the inventory taken at the end of February of the past year—for which half of the reimbursement was imposed on each of them by resolution of the 17th of September of the past year—and having therefore resolved to have the entire amount paid by the aforementioned Rietveld, reserving his recourse against the insolvent estate of De Wijs in competition with the other creditors, he requested by petition on the 18th of this month to be released from that reimbursement. This was requested on the grounds that the spices on which the deficits were found had lain untouched in the warehouses for 2, 3, to 4 years, and had thereby been subject to considerable drying out, which the administrators could not be blamed for, while he moreover had received them unopened, and on the contrary, at the handover of the administration to junior merchant Doeve, everything was opened and reweighed, which could also not have occurred without loss. We can therefore not refrain from presenting this request to Your Right Honourables, but have meanwhile ordered the aforementioned Rietveld to deposit the entire amount into escrow until Your Right Honourables' further orders, or to provide sufficient security for it. In the book year 1764/5, the general expenses of this Directorship amounted to 502035:2:- guilders, being 5864:- guilders more than in the previous book year. And the advance gained at Patna - Which, deducted from each other, shows that this Directorate in Anno 1764/5 has incurred a deficit of - - - - - - - - 7437:14:— ƒ4881:5:8 Increase of the charges at Hoeglij and decrease at Cassembazaar 9988:19:— ƒ3320:14:— 61:7:8: ƒ43192:13:—: 9988:19:— At the Main office, where the Charges have amounted to ƒ392557:8:—, being ƒ40678:18:8 more than in Anno 1763/4, that increase was principally caused by the gifts that had to be delivered to both Nawabs and other court grandees; further by the higher amount of the accounts for the Hospital, expenses of Ships, ship wages, Extraordinary Repairs, and condemnation and confiscation, while on the other hand all other Charge accounts were notably less than the preceding financial year, appearing in more detail in a comparison prepared by the Chief Administrator, and beside the comparison against what was stipulated in the memorandum of retrenchment, inserted in our Resolution of the 15th of this month. The Charges at Kassembazaer were ƒ6759:6:8 less than the previous year, due to the reduction in the Charge accounts of ordinary and Extraordinary expenses, shore pay, Carpentry and Repairs, and Gifts; separately specified with the reasons in a demonstration and comparison, to be found in our decision of the 26th of November last, to which has been added their comparison against what was stipulated in the Memorandum of retrenchment, with which they also differ favorably by ƒ5182:10:—; on the other hand, the Revenues were ƒ110:—:8 less in the Last Year than in Anno 1763/4, and thus was saved on dues, in comparison with the previous Year, ƒ6649:6:—. Patna Charges and profits The Patna Charges, excluding the extorted moneys, having amounted to ƒ34057:3:8 and the profits to only ƒ10655:13:—, making a difference of ƒ23401:11:8, that office has nonetheless, in comparison with the previous financial year, gained an advance amounting to ƒ9988:19:—, of which the demonstration and comparison are likewise inserted in our decision of the 26th of November; the decrease in profits being considered solely as a consequence of the bad times, while the lesser Charges were caused by the fact that, owing to the removal of war troubles, no matchlockmen or vessels had to be hired, and moreover one was freed from various extraordinary expenditures.
